The Angels have designated left-hander Ian Krol for assignment, Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group tweets. The Halos recalled righty Akeel Morris from Triple-A in a corresponding move.
Krol is in his first year with the Angels, who signed him to a minor league deal over the winter. The 27-year-old made his debut appearance with the club on Sunday and tossed two scoreless innings of one-hit ball, but that wasn’t enough to keep him on its roster. Krol previously threw 21 effective innings at Triple-A, where he posted a 1.71 ERA with 8.57 K/9, 3.56 BB/9 and a 50.9 percent groundball rate.
Also a former National, Tiger and Brave, Krol has produced passable numbers at the major league level, having combined for a 4.50 ERA with 8.43 K/9, 3.46 BB/9 and a 45.2 percent grounder rate in 190 innings. He’s out of minor league options, though, so if a team does claim Krol, it’ll need to put him on its 25-man roster or try to sneak him back through waivers.

I wonder if the angels will have the courage to release Pujols eventually.
Ironman_4life
Why? Have you watched an Angel game over the last few years? His numbers still make him a team leader on a lot of teams.
Yankeepride88
You mean his negative WAR, inflated RBIs by hitting behind the best player in baseball, and an OBP of .286?
Those numbers would lead what team? Maybe the Marlins. Pujols is literally below replacement level. You’re paying him $27mil to be a good clubhouse player? Lmao
Ironman_4life
Im not paying him a dime. I just dont get why people bash a guy who has his accolades.
Ironman_4life
Last year 27 homers. 101 rbis. That leads 11 teams. Did my homework.
darkstar61
Of 144 qualified hitters, the Angels 26 million dollar DH/1B was:
139th in OBP
132nd in SLG
137th in OPS
137th in wOBA
135th in wRC+ (and was a whopping 22% below the average hitter)
Overall he was worth (or cost the team, is more accurate)
-6.1 Baserunning (137th)
-23.5 Offense (141st)
-17.4 Defense (141st)
-1.9 WAR (144th, so dead last)
In fact, of 15332 qualified position player seasons in MLB history, that -1.9 WAR ranks 15271st
So sure, his 2017 was one of the worst seasons in the history of the game at one of the highest salary costs in the history of the game – but that’s not something you feel people should notice?
Ironman_4life
Next thing you know you’re gonna tell me he’s worse than Chris Davis
darkstar61
So you sink to pointing to a flukish and comically pitiful bit over a month for one guy to justify the Angels having a nearly 30 million sub-replacement guy off one of the worst seasons in the history of the game they insist on not only keeping in the lineup, but even batting 3rd/4th?
Cam
darkstars homework crushed your homework.
Pujols was a great player. He isn’t anymore. Past production doesn’t count towards today’s success.

I could see it… I want to see him get to 700 and maybe break Bonds’ record, but there’s too much negative value for the Angels to hold onto him (and then once the Angels cut him, it’d be really hard to get enough playing time to hit enough HRs). Mike Scioscia still talks the guy up, though, so the decision would have to come from Eppler (unlikely – he’s another guy who has talked up Pujols) or Moreno (even less likely). I think Pujols would be much more valuable if plantar fasciitis didn’t take its toll over the years… but here we are.

Pujols has more value than just on the field
sheff86
So does that mean you have 25 nice guys that can’t win?
NerdPowahh
About as likely as them parting with Mike Scioscia
Caseys.Partner
What’s the holdup with Ian Kinsler’s DFA?
angelsfan4life
Just as important, when will they call up Fletcher and let him take over at second?
NerdPowahh
Guess Detroit really did get enough for Ian Kinsler
Last Son of Krypton
Red Sox should make a claim. No worse the. What we got.
layventsky
Same with the Indians.
sufferforsnakes
Yep.
Michael Chaney
At this point anyone would be an upgrade for the Indians’ bullpen
Angelfanforlife19
Strangers things have happened no tellin who’s running the show……but Scioscia has to go. 18 years of nothing and for you people that argue he won a ws I say he walked in on it and for you people that say he has won 1500 games I say after 18 years and good teams what do you expect? I would have won 1501 after 18 years but the fact remains a lot of turmoil and no more ws.

Managers dont get fired by wins and losses. Generally a manager is fired when veteran players go to GM or ownership and tell them the manager has lost the clubhouse or respect. I bet if you ask the 25 in that clubhouse who they want as manager, they will say scioscia.
Not A Scioscia Fan
Ahhh, I see. Scioscia the ever so creative one wants to overload on right handed relievers. When is After Moreno going to get out from under his manager’s “hey, I won a World Series title for you” spell?! That was OVER 15 YEARS AGO! Since that title there’s been nothing but empty division titles. Woopee! Step 1 is to replace Scioscia with someone with fire (Erstad?). Step 2 is to see if Calhoun can even hit AAA pitching and give Blash more time than a couple games. If Calhoun can’t even hit down there, see if someone will give up any sort of worthwhile player in return. Sorry to all you Calhoun defense lovers, but that only comes around every once in a while. They need someone to produce on a more frequent basis. Step 3 is to get Fletcher up and let him play 2B (DFA Kinsler). Step 4 is to use whatever (if there are any) trade chips and find some relievers that can actually spell R-E-L-I-E-F.
Roy Hobbs
Wrong, Arte did not own the team when they won the World Series.
sheff86
Thank you! The fans are as big a mess than the team.
Not A Scioscia Fan
He basically did. He owned the team the following year. Moreno has allowed his manager to use that as a crutch for far too long. Now, your thoughts on the initial topic??
mannyl101
Obviously your not!
dodgerskingsfan
watch. this is a rp that friedman will get. he seems to get guys like this.. always been his MO.
8791Slegna
Bet Ian Krol would still with the team if he was a RIGHT handed pitcher. God forbid the Angels have a 2nd southpaw in their bullpen.
Angelfanforlife19
Right? The angels would have gone all the way in 2009 if they would have had even one lefty in the bullpen that was the year they swept Boston in the playoffs 1st round
