The Mariners “indicated” that they wouldn’t be looking for an external candidate to replace Robinson Cano at second base, the Tacoma News Tribune’s TJ Cotterill writes. This would leave Seattle with internal options like Andrew Romine, Taylor Motter, and Gordon Beckham at the keystone, since center fielder Dee Gordon doesn’t appear to be under consideration for a move back to his former position. In my view, the Mariners could re-assess their plans once they have a clearer idea of how much time Cano will miss, as we’re still just hours removed from the star second baseman suffering a fracture in his hand after being hit by a pitch in today’s game.
More rumblings from around the AL West…
- Angels right-hander Keynan Middleton left today’s game after 12 pitches due to what the club termed as elbow discomfort. Middleton will undergo an MRI tomorrow. Today’s outing was Middleton’s third appearance since returning from a 10-day DL stint for inflammation in that same elbow. The 24-year-old closer has posted good results when healthy (2.04 ERA and an 8.25 K/9 in 17 2/3 IP), and in his absence, Blake Parker and Jim Johnson figure to get the bulk of save opportunities for the Halos. Be sure to follow @CloserNews (MLBTR’s affiliate Twitter site) for all the latest details on the ninth-inning situation for all 30 teams around baseball.
- Because Bruce Maxwell hasn’t yet been sentenced following his plea agreement for a change of disorderly conduct, Canadian immigration laws will prevent Maxwell from joining the Athletics during their upcoming four-game series in Toronto, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Maxwell will have to be demoted at some point before Thursday’s series opener if the A’s are to have a backup behind Jonathan Lucroy. Slusser suggests that prospect Beau Taylor (off to a hot start at Triple-A) could be considered even though he isn’t on the 40-man roster, though Josh Phegley could also be called up if Oakland didn’t want to make another transaction to clear room for Taylor.
- Astros GM Jeff Luhnow admitted that “Obviously, you have to think about potentially doing something” to address some struggling hitters on Houston’s roster, though Luhnow tells Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle that he still has faith in the “proven track records” of veterans like Evan Gattis or Jake Marisnick. In regards to Marisnick, for instance, Luhnow mentioned that his excellent defense makes him an important figure for the team. This gives Marisnick more value than another internal option like top prospect J.D. Davis, who is tearing up Triple-A pitching but is limited to just left field.
Seattle should take a look at Brandon Philips. Hard to believe he’s not on a MLB roster.
even though I’m an angel fan that would be a great move only had him last year for the second half he was great out there that would be a great one for you guys hope you can get him
Middleton has no one else to blame for his arm problems. If you look at pictures of his physique last year, you will see a well-defined athlete. Apparently, he went home and started eating everything he saw gaining anywhere from 20 to 25 pounds of fat. The first thing I noticed when I saw him early in the season was a guy who could not follow through and always finished standing up. This type of delivery puts a lot of stress on the arm. It has been proven by studies done that pitchers who had the most flexión at the waist area were those who were able to maximize their velo & put less stress on their arms. I also blame the organization for not addressing this matter in Spring Training.
Body shaming smh I thought we were better than this as a society
GTFO this is a sports site not teen vogue..
Or even an milb
Wow I didn’t even realize Phillips is a FA. Seattle should definitely take a look
You can have Eduardo Nunez from the Red Sox. We have a surplus and he’s proven his knee is 100%. Done a decent job for Pedroia but now it’s time to move him because the Sox have tough roster decisions coming up.
Nunez is owed roughly $3M+a $2M buyout or $4M option. He’s currently batting .239/.264/.370. Phillips could likely be signed for close to the MLB minimum. He has 0 trade value
I thought that Nunez signed a relatively low value deal because of his knee.
Nope. When Trader Dave is in charge, old inconsistent players get more money than they should.
Doubtful since he just signed a 2 year 8 million dollar FA contract. Nobody wants to pay him that much, of course unless the Sox pay the majority of the contract. Dombrowski has done to the Sox what he did in Detroit, deplete the farm, overpay FA, bloated budget with no money to add. They better win this year cause it looks tough after this year.
Who would they lose next year that would make it tough to win then. Don’t they have a nice mix of veterans and young guys?
Kimbrell for one, plus Pomeranz and maybe Hanley. They have the largest payroll in the sport, and that mixture they have now isn’t that young.
Hanley is not going anywhere. He will rack up the necessary AB’s to hit the renewal button and then lost his glove. He hates playing D.
Chinwood, they’ll probably resign Kimbrell or find another closer. They like spending money so that shouldn’t be a problem. Plus they’re actually hoping Hanley doesn’t vest, and pomeranz is so so anyways.
In baseball 26 and younger is youth. Judge was a 25 year old rookie. They are loaded there. Many many players go till 35.
Red Sox should be able to compete for a division and playoffs for the next few years without a problem.
Nunez’s deal was considered a bargain at the time. I’m not sure a rough 100 AB stretch made him immovable. He wouldn’t bring anything of value back but I would imagine he could be moved.
NTC
Dombrowski is the most overrated GM/Front Office personnel in MLB
Agree Lord of no recent rings. Was he even GM of WS Marlins?
Daniels, Rizzo, Anthopoulos are more overrated.
He certainly overpays over the hill players at the same pace as cleaning out the team’s farm system.
I like the idea of picking up Philips but it might take him weeks to get up to speed. He can’t replace Cano in their lineup but he might be better than their in house options.
I don’t see them going after Phillips. I don’t even think an external option is likely. Beckham wasn’t in the lineup for Tacoma’s first game and isn’t in the lineup for the second of the double-header, which is in the 7th as I write this. Probably a safe bet to assume he’ll get the call tomorrow and Seattle happens to have an extra roster spot.
Seattle should be shopping for a lefty-hitting outfielder, though.
Maxwell can go kneel his way to the retirement room!
Oh wow neat! there is a room where we can go just to retire!?! I’d love to know where that is!
it’s called jail.
Which is where Maxwell should be
Phegley might be a bit better catcher defensively and has the experience, but Taylor is off to a nice start offensively in AAA. And his been in the A’s system for a good while now. I say give Beau a chance in the show.
Taylor is better defensively and offensively than Phegley, Phegley needs to be DFA’d to get Taylor to 40 man. Phegley’s “experience” has shown that he’s bad at baseball, its time for new blood. Taylor is ADORED within the org since 2011 for his work. Phegley can’t hit and his defense rates as “better than Maxwell” but that’s not saying much.
Ole Brucie…so classy.
Luhnow is the GM but I differ with him on Marisnick. I think Davis is potentially more valuable. With Springer, Reddick, Fisher, and Gonzalez for OF, I see Davis as a utility infielder/DH player.
How come Davis is limited to left field? He’s only appeared at the infield corners and pitcher in the big leagues.
Bc the Astros don’t have an everyday LF. They have an everyday 1st or 3rd baseman.
Starlin Castro and cash for a lotto ticket
I think the astros would be wise to start trading high on some of their minor league talent for draft picks. Kemp, davis, and possibly reed all look like theyre ready for the show but are blocked by guys currently on the roster. It would be great to gain some extra picks to restock the farm with younger talent.
You can’t trade draft picks in MLB.
Kemp and Reed kind of suck too. Putting up hot AAA slash lines doesn’t mean anything.
Davis is interesting though, because he’s 2-way. Houston should keep him though for that reason, and he’s depth if Bregman or Altuve get hurt.
Let me GM Oakland already:
Fire Bob Melvin, replace with Ryan Christensen. It’s time for this, Melvin is a notorious loser and he’s also really old and has no fire in him and doesn’t appear to understand new rules and is atrocious at putting together a batting order (L/R/L/R doesnt need to happen if you have hitters who hit both sides the same). Christensen has literally led all his minor league teams to the postseason and would bring the fire needed.
Maxwell to AAA, Taylor to MLB – Maxwell needs to fix his hitting. He can’t be a MLB regular with that bat. Taylor is loved within the org, has an excellent approach at the plate and is better defensively and is 28 – prime catcher breakout age. Murphy looming large too.
Joyce DFA/trade – bring up Anthony Garcia. Joyce needs a change of scenery, is a FA and is a perfect 4th OF on a contender. He won’t bring much back but he needs to stop blocking Pinder.
Smolinski to AAA/trade (he’s AAAA and just org depth, doesn’t need to be in the bigs at all.
Trade Marcus Semien for prospects, Barreto to MLB SS. Semien is more a 2B than a SS but can be a 2-ish WAR SS if just left out there. Sure he’s not consistent defensively, but he’s not the most painful guy to watch, that has decent prospect value. Barreto already showed he is the sparkplug the team needs and boy does he hit lasers and rockets out there. I see him as a 35+ homer guy in short order (If Albies is, Barreto def is). Barreto also has been moved back to SS in recent weeks, with Mateo going to 2B – you can see the A’s think this might be the look too.
Coulombe, Hatcher, Anderson and Font all DFA/optioned. Triggs to bullpen. Bring up Luzardo (he’s so ready, he’s CLEARLY a MLB arm right now), Gossett and Cahill & Buchter back from DL.
Rotation: Manaea-Mengden-Cahill-Graveman-Luzardo
Bullpen: Treinen-Trivino-Triggs-Casilla-Petit-Gossett-Dull-Buchter
Batting order:
C J Lucroy
1B M Olson
2B J Lowrie
DH K Davis
RF S Piscotty
3B M Chapman
LF M Canha
SS F Barreto
CF D Fowler
Bench: B Taylor, C Pinder, A Garcia
This team might actually contend, the A’s FO just need to take a leap of faith and bring up guys who look outstanding currently (Barreto and Luzardo) as well as jettisoning Melvin.
Jail is where Maxwell should be
Wrong. He should not stand for the national anthem. I know the gun thing was wrong but you guys love guns so that can’t be the reason he should be in jail
Obviously you’ve never served your country. The gravy train has stopped pal. #lockhim-up…
You are right. My country has caused countless innocent people to die by starting stupid wars. Ireland, iraq, afghanistan, falklands etc. Fortunately in the uk people live and let live and not be hated for the colour of their skin
Guns for self defense. Not pointing in the face of pizza delivery girls. Just stop defending this moron. First he lies about a waiter being racist against him and then he threatens to kill a pizza girl pointing a loaded weapon in her face. What is wrong with you defending this scumbag
you have some good ideas but if you are bringing up hot bats such as beau and anthony, then they should at least be in a platoon. if hey deserve the call-up, they deserve regular at-bats
Astros starters are going so deep into games that the bullpen is no getting enough work. They don’t need 8 relief pitchers. One should be swapped out for J. D. Davis.
The 5 aces are going to wear out their arms if they are already throwing complete games in May.
Why is Maxwell still in the league? Stephen Wright got in an argument with his wife and got suspended 30 games. Aroldis Chapman fired a gun in his garage alone and got suspended 30 games. Why is Maxwell, a guy who pointed a loaded weapon at a pizza delivery girl, not in prison, let alone a lengthy MLB suspension
calm down…Maxwell’s court date is not until June 4th, appropriate action will be taken after that
