It doesn’t appear just-designated Mets right-hander Matt Harvey will continue his career in New York as a member of the crosstown rival Yankees. “Don’t bet on it,” a source told Brendan Kuty of NJ.com when asked if the red-hot Yankees would pursue Harvey. The Yankees could arguably use another rotation option in the wake of fifth starter Jordan Montgomery’s flexor strain, which will keep him out for six to eight weeks. But the team’s plan for now is to replace the left-handed Montgomery with righty Domingo German, a 25-year-old who will make the first start of his big league career on Sunday.
More from the Bronx and a couple other AL destinations:
- If Harvey does indeed depart New York, it’s possible he’ll find a home in Texas, T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com writes. Rangers pitching coach Dan Warthen previously served in the same role with the Mets, and he formed a good relationship with Harvey during their time together from 2012-17. Warthen is of the belief that he can help fix the struggling Harvey, reports Sullivan, who adds that the Rangers will at least discuss adding the 29-year-old. If Harvey clears waivers and becomes a free agent, it could be worthwhile for Texas to take a low-cost flyer on him, given that its rotation ranks 24th in the majors in ERA (5.15) and 27th in fWAR (0.6).
- The Orioles are likely to activate second baseman Jonathan Schoop from the disabled list on Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com suggests. Schoop has been working back from the right oblique strain that sent him to the DL on April 14. Although Schoop got off to a poor start before then, hitting, .230/.266/.344 (64 wRC+) in 65 plate appearances, it’s fair to say his lengthy absence has helped lead to the O’s league-worst 8-24 record. Schoop was one of the best second basemen in the game last year, after all, and no one from the Jace Peterson–Engelb Vielma–Luis Sardinas trio has performed well in his stead over the past few weeks.
- The Yankees’ December 2014 acquisition of shortstop Didi Gregorius from the Diamondbacks has worked out beautifully for New York, which only gave up reliever Shane Greene in a three-team trade that also included the Tigers. With Gregorius off to such a tremendous start this year, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman revisited the deal in an interview with Jack Curry of the YES Network (video link). The Yankees had long been interested in landing Gregorius, revealed Cashman, who credits the influence of his friend Kevin Towers and the team’s analytics department for New York’s desire to acquire the player. Towers, who passed away earlier this year, was the Diamondbacks’ GM when they picked up Gregorius from the Reds in 2012. Arizona fired Towers a couple months before Gregorius went to the Yankees in a trade that Cashman didn’t expect to consummate, largely because then-Diamondbacks GM Dave Stewart also had a high opinion of Gregorius. The Yankees found a way to make it work, though, after involving the Tigers, who “coveted” Greene. It’s clear the trade hasn’t gone as planned for Detroit, however, as Greene has been a mixed bag while both the player it dealt – lefty Robbie Ray – and Gregorius have emerged as key pieces in Arizona and New York, respectively.

It’s funny how everyone rails on the Dbacks for the Gregorious trade but it’s really the Tigers who got the short end of the stick.
jdgoat
Ya, the DBacks did good. If it was straight up Didi-Ray, that’s about as even of deal you could make. The Tigers were clear losers even though they got a decent arm
Begamin
I dont know if you can say that, outside of 2017, Robbie-Didi was as even as it can get. Out of the three players involved, Didi has been the best one.
jdgoat
This year, ya. But each has steadily improved, after slow starts with their new teams.
thegreatcerealfamine
No, Didi overall…
Allknowingone
I don’t think anyone got a short end. It was three lottery tickets and one really hit. Remember the D-backs were the second team to trade DIDI. They were giving up on him and the Yankees saw something. The Tigers thought they could develop Greene into a mid rotation piece. If they did they would have gotten a steal in a controllable mid rotation peace for Ray. All three teams were in the market for assets they deemed undervalued.
NerdPowahh
It’s really three as Gregorious was traded to Cleveland by Cincy. Then swapped to Arizona. Unless that was a three-way trade?
In any event, there were rumors of Detroit wanting to acquire Gregorius while he was in Arizona. But due to their minor league system, they didn’t have the assets and wound up acquiring Jose Iglesias instead. Mainly because they knew of the upcoming Jhonny Peralta suspension.
Not a bad consolation prize but Gregorius certainly would have better.
azbobbop
When Towers made the first three way trade to acquire Didi, he was roundly roasted for comparing him to Derek Jeter. Interesting that after he was whacked, he advised Cashman to make the acquisition. KT was right.. both times.

a great baseball man, and a great man, RIP KT

Was Dumbrowski the Tigers GM in the Greene-Ray-Didi trade or had Avila taken over? Sad reminder about Kevin Towers, R.I.P.
dbacksfan22
Dombroski was the GM

Yanks-Dbacks have a lot of history doing three-team trades.
majorflaw
Gonna share any of that history, x?

Yes n I wonder if that fiasco was orchestrated by DD of the Redsox now.
pasha2k
Haha I should have read all the comments before posting the first time. DD was my first guess. As much as I don’t like the Evil Empire, Cashman is an amazing GM.
Adam6710
He may not be the best GM, he is certainly the best at making great trades. His track record of finding diamonds in the rough (whether long term like Didi, or short term like Cory Lidle) or just completely hosing his trade partners is insane.
srechter
Cory Lidle? Seriously? You probably couldn’t have picked a worse name as an example of Cashman’s skills. He sucked after the trade, even if he wasn’t the focal point of said trade.
KnicksFanCavsFan
A young prospect who deserves his chance vs a highly talented yet struggling pitcher who feels a bit entitled and unwilling to go to AAA if needed? Think it’s rather go with German.
Allknowingone
Do not believe this foolishness. Look at Harvey’s history, look at the fact he pitched in a WS with the Mets and has won post season games in NY. If he can be had for the league minimum the Yankees will be involved. There is just too much upside for very little cost. With Montgomery’s injury and the fact the Yankees never added a starter in the off season the Yankees are actually the most logical spot for Harvey. I actually think he will do well wherever he winds up because he will be on a short leash pitching for his baseball life. Based on his history with the Mets he had leeway. They would not release him for social media leeway. The next team won”t give him any latitude.
NerdPowahh
Detroit won a previous three-way trade with Arizona and New York. Only to lose this one.
Win some…Lose some

Greene started off great for Detroit as a starter until an injury. He hasn’t been quite the same after his TOS, as many pitchers aren’t
davidcoonce74
Including Matt Harvey. As many people seem to think Harvey can be “fixed” in the right situation it’s important to note how basically no pitcher has recovered well from TOS surgery and it’s ended lots of careers. It’s a tough procedure that hasn’t yielded good results so far.

Strasburg
davidcoonce74
He had Tommy John, not Thoracic Outlet Surgery. Very different procedures.
seth3120
Chris Carpenter and Jaime Garcia had some success post TOS although I agree much different than TJ
start_wearing_purple
If Harvey’s having issues in New York and if he’s the prima donna people thinks he is then my guess is the yankees, Boston, the Chicago teams, the LA teams, Philly, and anywhere else that draw a crowd and scrutiny are out.
How about the Reds. Not like they’re going to contend and no pressure could be relaxing.

Better than Tillman.

Rangers and Harvey could be a good partnership. Give him a two year deal. Maybe he figures it out and gives us a quality rotation guy because we’re sorely lacking.
CursedRangers
The Rangers have had their sights on Harvey for years. He can’t be any worse than Perez has been
Modified_6
For the life of me I’ll never understand what anyone has ever seen in Perez.

Young and cheap option to eat innings that’s about it.

At the time of the trade Didi was viewed as a slick fielding SS with a very light bat. I believe his OBP was under .300 the season before he was traded and his OPS was around .650. The D-Backs had Owings who was viewed as a better option with the bat and Ahmed who could field as good or better than Didi. The Yankees were looking for someone who could replace Jeter and signing a free agent to step into his shoes was going to be difficult, if not impossible. Didi has broken out having finally been given the everyday at bats most players need to adjust to MLB pitching. He had low expectations coming in and with that didn’t have the pressure a high priced free agent would have had to produce. The stars aligned perfectly for him to become the player many thought he was capable of becoming.
Greene was coming off of a rookie season similar to Montgomery’s last year. He was only seen as a 4th-5th starter in MLB. Why Detroit was so high on him baffled me. His first few games of 2015 had Detroit looking like geniuses though. Until he came back down to Earth that is.
Ray had a horrible rookie campaign in Detroit.. I think his ERA+ was under 50 and his WHIP was close to 2.00 in 2014 Dombrowski has always been a what have you done for me lately kind of GM and I am sure he thought he was getting a win-now decent back end starter in exchange for Ray, who had a higher ceiling than Greene but still needed development. Dombrowski was giving it his all to win a championship for Illitch and I am sure that played a large part in the trade..
southbeachbully
I do think Cashman had high expectations of Didi. It was mentioned that he was coveted by his team of advisers. He did buy low but the Yanks DID trade a talented pitcher that looked as if he had the talent to be a solid #3 or #4 starter, at the least. The fact that he HASN’T proved himself doesn’t negate what his perceived value was at the time. A rookie pitcher who in his first 15 starts had more K/IP and had a solid ERA (3..78) in about 90 IP. That’s comparable to what Montgomery did last year, just in fewer IP.
sportsjunkie24
Orioles could use harvey
stubby66
I can remember when Phillips had said that he was looking forward to playing with Didi for years to come in the Reds orginzation he said he was going to be a future star. huh who would have known lol
