The Rangers may trade left-hander Cole Hamels in the next couple months, and “it looks like the Yankees could be interested,” Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes. Although the Yankees are among 20 teams on Hamels’ no-trade list, the 34-year-old suggested earlier this week that he wouldn’t block a move to a contender. New York certainly looks as if it’ll contend all season, which would appeal to Hamels, and the team figures to end up acquiring him or another legitimate starter at some point this summer. General manager Brian Cashman pointed to his pitching staff as an area that he could address Saturday, before Sonny Gray continued his disappointing season with an ugly start against the Angels.
Regardless of whether the Yankees go outside for help, they should get back a rotation reinforcement, lefty Jordan Montgomery, in the coming weeks. Montgomery, who has been out since May 2 with an elbow strain, is “progressing” without any issues, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com tweets. The second-year man is three-plus weeks into a potential six- to eight-week absence, and he had been in the midst of another effective season prior to going down. Righty Domingo German has served as a Montgomery fill-in for three starts, the first of which went swimmingly and the next two rather poorly.
More on a few other AL teams…
- There have been questions about the Orioles’ power structure, a group that includes general manager Dan Duquette, manager Buck Showalter, VP Brady Anderson and ownership (Peter Angelos and his two sons), but signs are pointing to Duquette making the calls this summer, per Cafardo. Based on Cafardo’s report, Duquette will run point on a potential Manny Machado trade, one that could provide long-term benefits for the Orioles if the GM secures the right talent in return. Whether Duquette will continue in his post beyond this season remains unclear, though, given that his contract’s set to expire and the O’s look primed to begin a rebuild.
- Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera could come off the disabled list as early as Monday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com tweets. The 35-year-old has missed upward of three weeks with a hamstring strain, which derailed an excellent start to his season. Cabrera put together a .323/.407/.516 line in 108 plate appearances before landing on the shelf.
- The surging Mariners picked up another win Saturday to move to 31-20, though they may have lost a couple important contributors in the process. Shortstop Jean Segura exited after being kicked in the head, and manager Scott Servais said afterward that he’d enter concussion protocol, while reliever Nick Vincent departed with a strained right groin (Twitter links via Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times). A DL stint seems like a good possibility for Vincent, who ranks third among Mariners in relievers in innings (22) and has logged a 4.09 ERA with 9.41 K/9 against 2.45 BB/9. The Mariners will presumably know more Sunday on Vincent and Segura, one of their offensive catalysts. Segura has slashed .329/.345/.469 with four home runs and 12 stolen bases in 226 PAs this season.

Well if a Boston writer “Nick Cafardo” writes that the Yankees are interested, you better just bank it. The guy can’t even get his facts straight about the Red Sox.
joshua.barron1
I don’t get how this guy still has a job
thegreatcerealfamine
Him or Joel Sherman, thank God he’s not on MLB network anymore.

The injuries and suspensions have been brutal for the M’s, but it does seem that they’re somehow scrapping and fighting and winning. Having watched them since 2010, I’m loving this.
Stevil
Nobody talks about this, but Dipoto, Servais, and McKay have stressed many times that it wasn’t just finding good players, but the right players. They were looking for personalities and characters that fit the profile of what they wanted. You can argue that they’re overachieving, but that’s what you might expect from a team that’s dialed-in with the right mindset.
Look for Andreoli and Vogelbach to go down today, with Motter and Altavilla coming up (assuming Vincent hits the DL). They’ll need an extra arm after last night’s taxing of the ‘pen and depth for both the outfield and infield. Motter’s the only one who fits that profile on the 40.
Stevil
Well, what do I know? Motter was DFA’d to make room for Herrmann on the 40. He wasn’t hitting in Tacoma, but he was the only utility player they had in reserve.
barnard
Herrmann has the ability to play the OF if needed, and off the top of my head (not 100% certain) he’s seen time at the corner infield spots too. We also have Romine who can play every position and is our emergency 3rd string catcher
ayrbhoy
Nick Vincent’s departure is softened by the arrival of Alex Colomé- should be a straight swap in the 8th inning high leverage/hold role. Ryan Cook’s promotion will also help pad Vincent’s departure. I’m most worried about Segura’s injury- it looked an innocuous challenge but you have to take concussions seriously. He’s the best hitter currently in the lineup – Cruz thru Zunino are strikeout prone and have been cold as of late killing so many rallies. It’s amazing we’re 11g over .500 w this depleted lineup
matthew102402
Thank God for helmets.. that was insane. We can’t catch a break on that front. Lead the league in HBP, get kicked in the head. Not so fun.
Stevil
I would love to see a video clip of each HBP. I’m really curious how many were unavoidable.

Nice to see Miggy doing Miggy things again. Can’t wait till he gets into the HoF
Mr. Furious
Great. So the Yanks are going to lose Clint Frazier and who knows who else because Sonny Gray sucks.
padam
Adding Cole H. wouldn’t be such a bad thing, though I think they’ll need to hold on to some prospects in order to make that deal for Machado.
Bocephus
Yea cause there’s just so much room for Frazier, oh and their other starters besides Severino are pitching so well.
Mr. Furious
You’re aware that the Yankees will play beyond this season, right? I’d much rather have Clint Frazier in left field next year than Gardner. I mean, I love Gardner, but he’ll be 36 next year and Frazier has a real shot at being a star..
If they move Frazier as part of a deal for a top-line pitcher, I’m all for it. What would annoy me is if they felt they had to do so because Gray keeps crapping the bed.
Bocephus
You do realize he hasn’t proven anything anywhere. Yea Gardner will more then likely be gone after this year, but there’s a certain Lefty swinging a bat in Washington right now that would fit in real well.
bravesandcrewfan
Stanton can field pretty well I’d say. Judge Hicks Stanton OF for the next few years is almost a lock, so from the yanks perspective, they owe it to Frazier to send him anywhere where he can prove himself at the big level. Idk if he’s what they send for Hamels, but I definitely think he’s traded.
Mr. Furious
Sure, trade your top prospects to acquire high-priced veterans and to make room for the most expensive free agents on the market. That’s a fantastic long-term strategy that gives me flashbacks to the ’80s.
That said, though, I trust Cashman and the rest of the front office in their internal player assessments, and it’s clear that they view Frazier as a trade chip and not as someone they see a role for long-term.
Mr. Furious
I agree that Stanton could fill that LF spot, but it seems like they’re more inclined to have him DH. Maybe that’s because Gardner’s on the team and they’d rather have Stanton play left when either Gardner or Hicks needs a day off and the long-term plan is to plug him in there, once Gardner is gone..
I love Frazier and I think it would be awesome to have a guy with that bat in the lineup making peanuts. Who knows, though, maybe he flames out entirely, maybe he’s just an OK player, and then Cashman gets ripped for hanging onto him instead of trading him at his peak value for a guy like Hamels.
badco44
Sorry I just don’t see anouther bat like Machado or Harper ending up in NY….. someone will have to go.. possible 40 mil per… only so many pieces to the pie gentleman. My guess is pitching cause it’s about matching up to Houston
Steven Chinwood
Frazier is no longer considered a top prospect, and Sheffield is the real steal that came out of the Miller trade. Thing is those 80’s teams were in no way constructed like this team, they had no chemistry. They need a starter to be trusted to take the ball in big situations, maybe Hamels maybe not.
sheff86
How about Hammels and a prospect for Gray
nitemare
Frazier should be staying in left field right now over Hicks.. Gardner in center. Just poor decision making for Yankees
emt tim
Yeah the A’s can just take Sonny Gray back. Please and thank you.
Mr. Furious
I’d accept a drum of authentic O.Co Coliseum sewage in return.
madmanTX
Torres, Abreu and Sheffield and no money back for Hamels. No discount for the Yankees.
driftcat28 2
Lol
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I guess Hamels won’t be traded then if that’s the expectation.
bravesandcrewfan
Idk, I’d take that trade if I’m the Rangers for sure. Torres is doing great and was recently one of the top prospects in baseball. I don’t know much about the other two but I’d say that’s a huge good deal for the Rangers. Although I don’t think the yanks are that desparate.

You’ll take what’s offered, send money back, and continue sucking while you wait for a new ballpark.

for a pitcher who is a shell of his former self, pretty funny

Torres is 21, batting .320 so far, has shown good power, and plays very good defense.
The only place he’s going is Monument Park in Yankee Stadium if he keep this up.
Enough with these ridiculous stupid trade proposals!
Please!!!!

@Rocky7. Amen!!!

No he doesnt play good defense. Lots of errors.

Lmfao!!sure! Let’s pull out our retired players in their primes too and add them like some lopsided video game trade while we’re at it!

The safe bet is New York acquires 1 SP, whoever that may be. Now if New York finds a way to acquire 2 SP, I could see Gray being dealt away in an Ivan Nova type of trade – where Cashman is doing whatever it takes to get him off the team
Begamin
What room is there for another SP if they dont trade away one of them? Say they get Hamels, they will have Severino, Tanaka, CC, Gray, Hamels, Montgomery, and German for SP. I could see them trading Gray even if they obtain one SP
Steven Chinwood
Montgomery is hurt and what’s the real timetable for his return. You can’t be serious mentioning German. You can never have enough starting pitching.
Begamin
Montgomery wont be hurt forever, and especially at the trade deadline he will already be back or close to returning. (i think he was only going to be out for a month, maybe two? think i read 6 weeks somewhere. not sure tho, correct me if im wrong).
German being the number 5 guy is really not bad at all. Sure he had some rough starts but he has the stuff. Reminds me of how Severino came up big in his first stint and then struggled and then became a Cy Young consideration. German has electric stuff but he is still a bit raw so he misses his locations too much. Dont forget that he was no-hitting the indians and pitched very well against the astros
You can have too much starting pitching. If you 7 SP and only use 5 then you are wasting 2 roster spots. They already have 6. 6 is enough. Should they upgrade at SP? Sure. But should they go grab Hamels and then not trade away Gray? I know if I were running the team if I got another SP that i would trade Gray for prospects or a relief arm. The Yankees will be fine in the regular season with this pitching staff, no doubt. What they need is just one more star caliber SP to give them the edge in the playoffs. They could only rely on Severino, CC, and Tanaka last year in the playoffs and their pitching wasnt what didnt get them to the World Series
nitemare
They have a huge problem. Only one starter is good. The rest are average. CC should never have been resigned. I hoped Tanaka opted out. Gray is a bust. German can’t pitch with runners on. Good pitching always defeats good hitting..Astros should dominate again
skrockij89
M’s need another starter. Wonder if the Yankees would sell low on Gray if they manage to pick up Hamels?
Begamin
This seems like a reasonable idea. Hamels shouldnt cost the Yankees too much in terms of prospects due to Hamels age, salary size, and the fact that there would only be 1 and a half years of control. Then trading Gray to SEA makes all the sense in the world. Dipoto loves trades! Wonder if the Yankees would try to pry MLB talent or try to obtain some prospects.
skrockij89
M’s still have cash left over from the Cano suspension and can help the Yankees stay under the luxury tax line by trading Gray away. If they managed to pick up Hamels.
Ed "The Mythical One"
There needs to be a correction made to the Orioles part of this post.
The Orioles do not have a GM or General Manager. That is not Dan Duquette’s title. He is the Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations. There hasn’t been anyone given the GM title in nearly two decades. There is also no President of Baseball Operations.
Brady is the Vice President of Baseball Operations. Brady has been in many of the key negotiations this season for Alex Cobb, Andrew Cashner, Chris Tillman, and the resigning of Darren O’Day. Peter Angelos was the one that orchestrated the Chris Davis deal.
Dan Duquette has no control over this organization. He might be allowed to work the phones on a deal for Manny, but he isn’t the one allowed to pull the trigger.
