White Sox right fielder Avisail Garcia likely won’t return to game action until the end of June, the team announced. Garcia, who has been out since April 24 with a strained right hamstring, underwent an MRI “that revealed improvement but the continued presence of a grade 2 strain,” per the club. On the heels of a terrific 2017, Garcia looked like a potential trade chip entering this season. However, between Garcia’s lengthy absence and the fact that he opened 2018 with a .233/.250/.315 line and no walks in 76 pre-injury plate appearances, his trade value has likely taken a sizable hit this year.
- Athletics slugger Khris Davis left their game Sunday with a right groin strain, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle writes. The severity isn’t known, though Slusser points out that groin strains tend to take anywhere from two to six weeks to heal. A stint on the disabled list seems like a strong possibility, then, and that would be a tough development for the surging A’s. The club’s on its way to a 25-22 start, and Davis has certainly had a role in that with a .235/.307/.497 line and a team-high 13 homers in 205 PAs.
- Yankees first baseman Greg Bird could make his season debut during the upcoming week, manager Aaron Boone told Mike Mazzeo of the New York Daily News and other reporters Sunday. Bird hasn’t played this year on account of the right ankle surgery he underwent in late March, after missing most of last season with foot problems and all of 2016 with a torn labrum. Owners of the majors’ best record (29-13), the Yankees have gotten off to a great start without the talented Bird, thanks in part to first base fill-in Tyler Austin’s production. The 26-year-old rookie has smacked two HRs on Sunday to give him eight on the season and raise his OPS to .930 through 100 PAs.
- The Astros have placed outfielder Derek Fisher on the DL (retroactive to Saturday) and recalled corner infielder/outfielder J.D. Davis from Triple-A, per reports from Mark Berman of FOX 26 and Jake Kaplan of The Athletic. Fisher, who has hit just .176/.222/.419 in 81 PAs, is dealing with gastrointestinal discomfort. Like Fisher, Davis hasn’t been great at the big league level this year (250/.357/.250 in 28 PAs). However, the 25-year-old laid waste to the Triple-A Pacific Coast League prior to Sunday’s call-up, slashing .415/.473/.654 in 146 tries.

They need to find away to keep Austin on the 25 man roster. He has 1 option left. I would love to see what he could do with 500 AB.

Right? I dont know where the whole Walker>Austin idea people are on about on here came from. Austin was doing well until the he started his suspension and didnt play in many games coming off of it either and people were mad that his numbers werent good. I believe Austin is one of those players who does well with regular AB’s and is not a Torreyes type of player who can be plugged into the lineup after 5 days of no game time and do well.
Honestly, even after Walker’s improved play at the plate, its still not as impressive as what Austin has done. A combination of Bird and Austin seems like the way to go.

Really can’t understand why 4 people thought to give us a negative but whatever. Fact is, technically, Austin is still a rookie thus has a shot for ROY consideration. He’s a lot like Bird but from the right side but not as aware of the strike zone as Bird. I’m still a big fan of Bird as well.
I think Austin suffers from rookie fatigue because we’ve been waiting for him to stay healthy for a while. Good problem to have too much depth. I would hate to see Austin get lost for nothing because we run out of minor league options.

I dont really understand the phenomenon behind why people rate comments the way they do. If i had to guess, i would say that disagree that Austin>Walker but cant actually compose a response. Most people on this site arent the brightest anyway and probably get all their assessments from other people and just adopt other peoples opinion as their own. Its almost as if they read that one article on Neil posted here and took it as that Neil is the most amazing player ever. He is a .270 hitter at best with little pop at this point in his career.
I agree with you that Austin shouldnt be lost for nothing. Although I could see a scenario where Austin gets sent down while Cashman sees if Bird can stay healthy, and after he proves he can, he DFA’s walker and brings Austin up. Personally, I would just send Frazier down when Bird comes back and then if Bird is healthy I would DFA Walker and bring Frazier back up.
Austin and Bird should platoon at 1st. Neil has had some decent games of late, but if this is Neils hot streak and the best nights he has are 2 for 5’s then id rather let Austin and Bird take over. Austin and Birds potential outweighs Neils, although I would agrue that Neils floor is higher than Austins. Its almost like the situation where Cashman traded Headly away to allow a spot for Drury/Andujar.
I think Bird is legit though. He hit big HRs against top of the line pitchers like Giles and Miller in the playoffs. The scary thing is that what if you let Walker go and then Bird gets injured again? They have Adam Lind in the minors and a few other minor leaguers that could be called up, so its not like the Yankees would have to rely on Chris Carter.

Be a die hard Yankee fan, I will say with almost 100% certainty that the AL ROY will be Ohtani. It’s obvious. To even put Austin as a possible ROY is dumb. Yes he is a rookie, but no where’s near other rookies. Gleybor is our only option right now that would be closest to being a ROY. That being said….2018 Rookie of the Year goes to…..Ohtani hands down.
Begamin
I guess you dont know the difference between “Rookie of the Year” and a “Rookie of the Year consideration”. The latter, which Austin will probably fall in, recognizes him for being one of the better rookies that year. Its why you see on baseball reference players are sometimes noted with ROY-5 or CYA-7 because they were considerations for those awards.
No one is saying that he is going to beat out Ohtani for the award. Also, putting…. a bunch of…. periods……. is silly

I know alot about all aspects of the game and the understanding of it. So take ya comment and go shove it up ya ass

You sure about that? You haven’t really demonstrated that very well.

Olson really needs to step up now.

Very true!

Idiot Melvin needs to play Pinder everyday, who (entering today) has the 2nd best AVG, OBP, SLG and OPS on the team behind Lowrie.
Yes, Pinder has a higher SLG than Davis and Olson. And he’s solid defensively in the corner OF but sits regularly while the empty hitting Joyce and the horrible defense of Piscotty plays everyday.
arc89
don’t worry this means Joyce moves into DH role while Canha and Pinder get more at bats. Fowler is now the everyday CF. Piscotty will come around especially his OBA.
justin-turner overdrive
The lack of time Pinder has gotten while do nothing but mash is flat out disrespectful. He’s literally the same hitter as Ryon Healy, who Melvin hit 3, 5 and 6 all year last year but Pinder can play any defensive position and barely plays? He needs to be up higher and is flat out better at hitting than Joyce, Canha, Lucroy, Semien and Piscotty.
A’s would definitely won even more games had Pinder played most every game this year.
thomasg2018
Call it like it is. Fisher doesn’t have gas. He’s terrible.
strosguy
So the guy that scored the walk off run in game 5 of the World Series is terrible…… interesting

So does David carr. Fisher pinch ran. Plenty of people are fast that are not good baseball players. I like fisher. He has the told to perform in the big leagues but he has to start showing it soon or time to move on.

I still think Neil Walker is the odd man out. I think Cashman will deal him for a low level prospect. The Yankees will keep Bird and Austin on the 25 man roster
Steven Chinwood
Lookup Walkers contract.
TheTrotsky
He can still be traded with his consent.
Steven Chinwood
More then likely would ask for his release. People keep posting for some sort of trade.
dobsonel
He can be traded at the end of June without his consent.
Begamin
Is it until he end of June or he is allowed to be traded without consent starting at the end of June?
yanks161
Bird is the second coming of Nick Johnson. He actually has done nothing, it’s all hype! He should remain at Triple A Scranton and Austin should remain at 1st!
AllRise
Bird has done nothing….hmm game 3 of the ALDS 2017 says otherwise. Plus he has so much more talent than Johnson ever did. I’m so sick of Yankees fans being clueless about Bird’s abilities just because he’s had a couple bad breaks injury wise.
Jay Michael
Ummm…hes injury prone. Most likely will be most of career.
Begamin
Ummmmm…. he had some injuries therefor he has done nothing? Hes done more than Tyler Austin has so far, to put things in perspective.
Jay Michael
Bird has played more games and had more at bats dummio. Austin is more reliable and has already proven that.
Begamin
Right, Austin has had his fair share of injuries too. There is a reason Austin is still considered a rookie and its not because he wasnt MLB ready when Chris Carter manned 1B everyday
