Yankees left-hander Jordan Montgomery exited tonight’s start against the Astros due to tightness in his left elbow and is traveling back to New York for an examination, as MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch writes. Manager Aaron Boone said of the injury that the Yankees didn’t have any concern prior to Montgomery’s start, though he acknowledged that there is, of course, some degree of concern any time a pitcher exits with elbow or forearm tightness. Montgomery threw a perfect first inning and has a 3.62 ERA through 27 1/3 innings this season, but it’s worth pointing out that his average fastball has hovered at 90.3 mph this season after he averaged 92 mph on his heater in last year’s strong rookie campaign. Hoch adds (via Twitter) that Boone says Montgomery is in a “pretty good frame of mind” and is optimistic that he’s avoided a serious injury.
Elsewhere in the division…
- ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick has a lengthy feature on Adam Jones and the possibility of whether he’ll remain with the Orioles beyond the 2018 campaign. Crasnick speaks with Jones, manager Buck Showalter, GM Dan Duquette and Jones’ teammates in highlighting how important Jones has been to the organization and to the city of Baltimore as one of the faces of the franchise for a decade. Jones noted that given his impending free-agent status, he’s “obviously” hoping to put up big numbers but emphasized that his focus is on trying to right the ship in Baltimore after an ugly start to the season for the O’s. Duquette tells Crasnick that the team “absolutely” considers things like charisma, appeal to fans and intangibles such as leadership when placing a valuation on a player and praised Jones’ impact on the organization and Baltimore community. One anonymous GM noted to Crasnick, though, that Jones is the type of player who could be the “type of guy who gets to free agency and is a little disappointed” — a reference to Jones’ questionable OBP skills and declining defensive ratings in center field. O’s fans in particular will want to check out the column, as it gives a terrific look back at Jones’ legacy in the Charm City.
- Following Corey Seager’s season-ending injury, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes that the Rays will likely approach the Dodgers to gauge their interest in a trade for defensive standout Adeiny Hechavarria. Tampa Bay figures to trade Hechavarria at some point this season, Topkin notes, and moving him would open a clear path to the big leagues for surging infield prospect Willy Adames. Hechavarria, who is hitting .283/.317/.359 with a pair of homers through 102 plate appearances this season, has consistently graded out as a plus defender at short and is earning $5.9MM in 2018, with about $4.54MM of that sum yet to be paid out. Tampa Bay GM Erik Neander, of course, knows Dodgers president of baseball ops Andrew Friedman quite well from the pair’s days in the Rays’ front office, and they’ve lined up on a handful of deals in recent years (Logan Forsythe, Sergio Romo and Xavier Cedeno among them).

Just gonna miss Montgomery for 20 mins til I realize..
Yanks just shutout the WS Astros w only bullpen
mack22 2
They NY pitching staff isn’t all that great, but that “Murders Row” lineup they have will crush any opponent
mack22 2
“That” not “They”
Adam6710
Over the last 11 games the Yankees pitching staff has allowed just 20 runs. Their starter’s ERA is well under 2 in that span.
While their rotation is not a pitching powerhouse (that title belongs to the Astros) they clearly have the capacity to deliver when they’re performing on all cylinders. Their bullpen has settled down after some early struggles, and clearly their starters are making the adjustments too.
I don’t think it’s fair to expect them to deliver all season as they have the past 11 games, but somewhere in between their awful start and their recent stretch would make them a very good pitching team.
Sheev Palpatine
You also have to believe Cashman will try to acquire a quality starter somehow.
Adam6710
If Montgomery remains out, you bet they will. But if he’s not– where will they put a new starting pitcher? Someone has to get injured or REALLY start to stink up the joint to warrant a demotion.
Outside of the last 11 games, the problem with the rotation has been their startling mediocrity. Hard to upgrade when nobody is really TERRIBLE. Truly a case (again, outside of the recent strong stretch, which is hopefully a sign of major improvement)– of the whole being worse than the sum of its parts.
They started the year with an ace and four #4 starters. Still, small sample size in both directions. It’ll take another month to figure out exactly how good or bad the pitching staff is. It’s not as good as it’s been the past 11 games, and not as bad as it was the first 18.
IndiansFan15
I belive Cleveland hold the title of pitching power house but the Astros won the series so no one remembers Cleveland
rocky7
That pitching staff includes what is arguably the best bullpen in the majors!
How you can make that statement is questionable to say the least.
mstrchef13
Made easier (not easy, but definitely easier) by the 8 RHB in the Astros lineup against Montgomery now having to face RHP. Also, if you don’t miss Montgomery because you just blew out your bullpen with 8 relief IP, then you’re a fool.
rocky7
Excuses…Excuses…..I guess you thought the Stros were supposed to win every game eh!
I thought that lineup was supposed to pummel everyone!
AllRise
Blew out the bullpen? Huh? They used their long guy & each other reliever went 1 inning. The pen is fine barring another injury, but that could be said about most teams.
xabial
Noo Not Monty 🙁
Begamin
Sucks to have Montgomery injured but German did very well tonight

Gary Sanchez is a freaking BEAST.
He has won 3 out of the last 4 games with HUGE home runs.
Major League Leaders in RBI:
#1 Gregorious – 30
#2 (T) Gary Sanchez – 27
Counting today’s game, NYY Bullpen has 22.0 straight scoreless innings.
Verlander is the fourth pitcher in Major League history to strike out 14 Yankees without issuing a walk after: Pedro Martinez (1999), Curt Schilling (1997) Urban Shocker (1920)
Verlander is now 13-1 with a 1.45 ERA in 17 appearances (16 starts) since trade to Astros.
xabial
Edit: 13-1 with a 1.45 ERA in 18* games, 17* starts, Sorry 🙂
To think that trade was minutes away from not happening
xabial
Justin Verlander is also the only pitcher in MLB history with 14+ K, 0 BB, 0 ER in a game vs NYY. I’m a NYY fan, but you have to appreciate greatness.
Sheev Palpatine
I’m a Yankee fan, and i really can’t stand your posts.
Adam6710
I’m a Yankee fan and I think his posts are fine. Go jump down a shaft.

Thank you, Sheev, for contributing nothing, but hate. If you have nothing substantial to add, walk away. This is the 2nd time you’ve replied to me…. 100% of your replies to me literally add nothing.

Xabial, you can appreciate his greatness, I’ll appreciate Kate’s!

22 innings? Must be 3 games with that rotation of 4 inning pitchers.

No one commenting on URBAN SHOCKER?

Not sure why all the down arrows this time Xabial, good post
Steven Chinwood
Hopefully it turns out that the worst Montgomery needs is a 10 DL stint. Hate to see a panic or doom situation at this point on the starting staff through the media. Gray pitched well and Severino can at least lockdown a series split at the worst with a win tonight. This road trip will be a success even if they lose the last two games against the Astros, all this despite the 2-4 hitters struggling.
Adam6710
You mean 1 and 4. Didi is possibly the league MVP, but Gardner is very quietly having a terrible season, and while Judge has had a rough few games he has otherwise had a great first month.
Steven Chinwood
Yea meant 1-2-4
deweybelongsinthehall
Give Gardner time. He’s a proven clutch performer.
Bald Vinny
R.I.P.
See you in 1.5 years.
Bocephus
You should go keep him company.

Elbow, not forearm.

Dodgers don’t need (and shouldn’t have any interest in…) Hechavarria.
Defensively excellent, but offensively challenged. They’re covered with Taylor & Hernandez….and that frees up the crowded OF picture a bit too.
bobtillman
Hechy is just about the perfect answer to the Dodgers woes. You can get him just for salary relief….he really is very good defensively, with occasional offense……and he keeps you under the cap…..
Dodger fans need a reality check…..there’s not a “glut” in the OF, just a bunch of decent players who all have warts…..Puig’s just nuts, pure and simple……Verdugo loafs on just about every play (ask Hershiser)…..everybody else is AAAA quality….
That’s not to write them off….good organization, Freidman’s a bright guy……but they need to do some work…….
Kenleyfornia74
While i disagree on how you think their skills are you are right. Some think the Dodgers have an OF cluster when they really dont. On here some folks were even asking how Harper would fit with the Dodgers. Its really not hard to find playing time for anyone willing to step it up right now
JU11904
You make the case for the Dodgers doing nothing at SS — use Taylor with Kike backing him up — while adding a OF bat, which is easier (though not easy) to find.
jbigz12
If Taylor’s defense is okay at SS I find it hard to believe Hechavarria is an upgrade there. His 6 mil salary might not take you over the luxury tax threshold but it pushes you closer and makes it tighter for further moves this year. If hech is the guy they pick up to play SS they better add another bat in the outfield because going from Seager to hech is going to hurt that lineup severely.
driftcat28 2
It’s so crazy, Monty had a great 1st inning, and walking off the mound you could not tell that there was any pain, he just made a little stretching motion. Really hoping it’s nothing serious but what are the odds. He’d be a huge loss for the Yanks. I’d expect Cashman to make a deal for a starter now more than ever. They’ll probably even give Adams a shot too
dimitrios in la
Adam Jones has been much more to the O’s than his numbers. He’s been such a gloriously integral part of the O’s and their success. Wish there were more like him. Grateful to him.
gorav114
8th player in franchise history with 1500 games as an Oriole. One of the best ever at being active in the community and with the fans. Always honest with the media. He’s no longer a center fielder but I hope O’s can find a way to affordably keep him for remainder of his career.
Javi Padilla
Legit SS come with steep prospect price. Outfielders don’t. they grow on grass. Rather go after a CF more prospect cost effective. sorry guys but if u haven’t seen that aint the dodger first issue . Its bullpen first starting pitching second then finally replacing a SS or CF. theses poor dodger fans here machado and forget reality. Archer and a bullpen arm goes farther. verdugos # in a full year will kill hechavarrias if we put taylor at SS. no brainer.
bobtillman
You can probably get Archer if you take Hechiavera…….Archer’s been decidedly “meh” to awful over the first month….even considering that pathetic contract…..and I think Archer, in a bigger park, out of the AL East, is a pretty good pitcher……
And your 100% right about pitching (both ends) REALLY being the issue….along with a farm system that’s more sizzle than steak…..Verdugo could be a mess, even if he hits….Bueller gets hurt….White’s on the IR so far (AGAIN)…..seems to be endless…..
Nobody knows what’s really going on the Twilight Zone in Tampa, but I would think you could sew together some mid level guys and get that done……
