The Padres have placed outfielder Wil Myers on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain, Dennis Lin of The Athletic tweets. His roster spot will go to outfielder Travis Jankowski, whom the team recalled from Triple-A.
This is already the second DL placement of the year for Myers, who previously went on the shelf with a right arm injury. Myers missed roughly two weeks then, and oblique strains often require absences of at least that long. Clearly, then, Myers is on his way to a significantly shorter season than expected after appearing in at least 155 games in each of the previous two campaigns.
Without Myers, who has hit .300/.300/.450 in 40 plate appearances, the Padres’ outfield setup figures to mostly consist of Manuel Margot, potential breakout player Franchy Cordero and Jose Pirela. Jankowski and Matt Szczur are on hand as bench options for San Diego, which lost outfielder Hunter Renfroe to the DL earlier this month on account of elbow inflammation.

Jank is here? Well that sucks
DockEllisDee
I know right… hopefully he won’t compromise Franchy’s playing time, there’s 40+ homers in that kids bat, a quarter of which will go 450 ft. plus
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Cordero will keep playing as long as he keeps producing. But between Jankowski and Szczur it’s tough to tell who’s worse.
ronaldreagan
Jankowski is one of the best outfield defenders in major league baseball. Top 5.
mlb1225
I’m not saying he’s a bad fielder, but he’s definitely not a top 5 fielder.
bleacherbum
Yup, but he was on fire at El Paso however. But we have seen this same song and dance before.
mooshimanx
Too bad for Myers but this season looks to be mostly looking for breakout players anyways so I’m not all that concerned about opening a spot in the grass for a couple weeks.
nutznboltz
Myers is a joke with all his injuries and his strikeouts. He and Renfro and Jankowski need to go.
davidcoonce74
He played 155 games in each of the last two seasons. He’s never gotten hurt when he’s been a full-time first baseman. Don’t blame him for the Padres puzzling decision to remake him into an outfielder, where he can’t stay healthy.
nutznboltz
Come on you know he’s in and out of the lineup all the time with injuries. As far as I can remember none of his injuries have occurred while playing in the outfield. What puzzling decision are you talking about? Where was he going to play when they signed Hossmer?
nutznboltz
The average 73 games played his first three years.
davidcoonce74
All in the outfield. As a full-time first baseman he played 155 games in 2017 and 157 games in 2016. A bad team asks a guy to do something he’s not capable of doing, and signing Hosmer to that massive contract, when there’s no demonstrable evidence he’s any better than Myers, is absurd.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Well this wasn’t surprising. I wonder if they’re starting to realize that taking Myers out of his comfort zone at 1B was a bad idea.
nutznboltz
You would rather have Myers at first base then Hossmer?
davidcoonce74
Yes, Myers is cheaper and probably better than Hosmer. And he stays healthy at first.
jbigz12
Myers is not better than hosmer. No way. Is hosmer worth his contract? Probably not. Myers likely isn’t worth his deal either.
davidcoonce74
I think it’s a tossup. Myers offers more power and speed, Hosmer is probably better defensively and hits for a higher average. Myers walks a lot more and strikes out a lot more.
nypadre66
I’d take Hosmer hands down over Myers. Myers strikes out way too much, his power comes too often when the game’s over or nobody on (30 HR, 74 RBI, 0222 Avg with RISP last year). IMO, they should trade him for anything they can get in return.
nutznboltz
Why do you care about the money? Myers was a bad first baseman. Hosmer is a very very good first baseman. The last couple years their stats are very very similar. Over their careers Hossmer has been much much better.
davidcoonce74
Nope. Myers has been worth more, on a per-at-bat basis than Hosmer.
davidcoonce74
And Hosmer has, over the last two years, been a worse defensive first baseman than Myers.
nutznboltz
Hossmer has won the gold glove four out of the last five years.Myers was bad at first base how can you even compare the two?
davidcoonce74
Gold gloves are meaningless. I mean, all the numbers are there. You can look at Fangraphs or B-R and see pretty clearly that Myers’ defense at first rates better than Hosmer’s. Hosmer’s single defensive skill at first – scooping bad throws – is hard to measure, so maybe they are even, but the numbers don’t lie.

They both are horrendous big ticket $ down drain Royal rejects

Myers is dumb…makes dumb plays fielding and base running. He guesses as a hitter….he has no plan of attack. Always hurt. Availability is the best ability….and he doesn’t have it. Send him back to AL to DH. Cordero, Margot, Pirela are Padres best 3 OF. Renfroe has upside and should be kept.
davidcoonce74
“Always Hurt?” he missed fourteen games total over the last two seasons. Just look something up, for real.
nutznboltz
Look something up? You’re the one that said Hossmer has been a worse defensive first baseman then Myers. Hossmer has four gold gloves in the last five years. How many gold gloves does Myers have at any position?
chesteraarthur
Derek Jeter won gold gloves too. That’s a dumb measure to judge defense on.
You can see the below link for their comparative defensive statistics over the last 2 years.
fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=fld&…
nutznboltz
You don’t think Derek Jeter was a good shortstop? Are you kidding me?
MNev
Based on 2017 Fangraphs First Basemen chart I looked at, (defense only):
Headley rated #6 of 42
Hosmer #33 of 42
Myers #42 of 42
fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=1b&stats=bat…
The Pads should have put Headley at first and never should have signed Hosmer. JMHO.
davidcoonce74
Derek Jeter, by every single objectionable measure, wasn’t a good shortstop. He had a good reputation, and a strong throwing arm, but if you ever watched even a handful of Yankee games his deficiency was glaring – he had no ability to go to his left.
nutznboltz
His first three seasons the most games ever played was 88. He hasn’t even played in half the games this year so far.
nutznboltz
So yeah I stick by my comment that he always seems to be hurt.
davidcoonce74
His first season he spent a long time in the minors. The next two seasons he played the outfield – where he isn’t suitable – and got hurt. The Padres moved him to first and he played 155 games one season and 157 the next.
And defensive statistics are easily available, for Myers and Hosmer and Jeter. They are far more reliable than Gold Gloves, which are completely subjective and nobody takes them seriously.
padreforlife
He’s a dumb dude who strikes out a ton with no baseball sense
davidcoonce74
He walks a ton too, which might show some baseball sense, plus he hits 30 homers and steals 25 bases. Everybody strikes out a lot these days, in case you’ve not noticed. I’ll take a K than than GIDP anyday.
padreforlife
No team going near him with 70 mil owed he’s Padre problem
nutznboltz
Rumor is Padres are shopping Meyers.
