The Orioles have selected the contract of infielder Luis Sardinas, per a club announcement. With the move, the club has filled its 40-man roster.
Sardinas, 24, spent much of the 2017 season playing at Triple-A with the Orioles. He turned in 331 plate appearances of .319/.348/.419 hitting at Norfolk, which is the best stretch of offensive output in his career.
Of course, it would not be realistic to expect anything approaching that performance in the majors. Sardinas owns a less-than-ideal .229/.278/.293 slash in his 480 lifetime plate appearances at the game’s highest level. He is, however, held in higher regard for his fielding.
Baltimore will look to Sardinas to occupy a utility role off of the bench for as long as he’s in the majors. The organization already has another light-hitting, glove-first infielder on hand in Engelb Vielma, but evidently decided to boost its depth with Jonathan Schoop going on the DL.

Jbigz12. Still happy with the Orioles off season? And you hammered me for wanting Ryan Flaharty back. And it is not about how he is hitting, which we know is a fluke. But-he is hitting almost 2 times the Oriole team average. Versatility and defense is relative aND important. This ain’t fantasy. Now they are scrambling for 2nd and 3rd base. Just because someone complains, it does not make them less a fan for that team.

No. There’s nothing wrong with complaining. I didn’t hammer you for getting on the orioles offseason I just said it’s not over yet. You were hammering them pre-Cobb and Walker was still a FA. I had hoped that the pair of them would’ve been brought in since we were linked to Walker at that time. Walker would’ve been a nice addition to the lineup and moved Beckham into Flaherty’s role where he belonged in the first place. But Cmon Sardinas hit a game tying bomb in his first game! He’s hot. Flaherty wouldn’t have made a difference but he’s off to a completely unexpected start I’ll admit that. The biggest problem aside from K city at the plate is Tillman. I thought Tillman would be a competent starter this season, he is not. I’ll Give Cobb a mulligan for start #1 and the rest of the rotation has been pretty serviceable. Beck has been even worse than I had imagined and my expectations were pretty low to begin with. Davis looks atrocious yet again but that’s a problem that we couldn’t solve this offseason we sailed that ship away 2 summers ago. Looks like a long year in Baltimore. Beckham was always my problem. If machado is going to be your SS then Beckham isn’t a starter at 3rd. We don’t need another high K guy in there and he doesn’t hit enough for a 3B. And like I said, I got on you for not waiting out the offseason because I truly believed DD would bring in more guys at the end. Walker to fill 3B and Cobb which he did.

This is where they are dysfunctional. Beckham is not a utility player. You need starters, pinch hitters and utility players. Utility is used for flexibility and defense. When Trumbo comes back we will see that too many DH’s will hurt you. Valencia was not a good fit either. They should have obtained a real 3rd baseman in the offseason. Management’s refusal to trade Britton for Colin Moran was stupid at the time and looks ridiculous now. The Rule 5 game has got to stop. The best Rule 5 player the Orioles ever had? Ryan Flaherty.

Beckham’s a utility guy. I agree with everything else but he can over 2nd 3rd and SS. Probably could cover a corner outfield slots if he was giving some reps there too. He’s either a SS or a utility player if he’s sticking around the big leagues. If we spent on IFA’s we wouldn’t have any need to draft araujo or Santander because we’d have guys like that in our org.
