Top Cubs baseball exec Theo Epstein made for an interesting guest on the latest podcast of MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (audio link). This is obviously worth a listen for any Cubs fans, as Epstein talks about some points where the team’s rebuilding effort led to particular frustration, but he also has some interesting tales to tell of broader interest. Most notably, perhaps, the former Red Sox GM suggests that there’s no way he or anybody else saw David Ortiz emerging the way he did. As proof, Epstein offers an anecdote about Ortiz’s agent seeking a trade early in the 2003 season — Ortiz’s first in Boston — because of a lack of playing time.
Here are a few notes from around the National League:
- Mets hurler Matt Harvey appears to be waging a battle with the New York media, as Mike Puma of the New York Post writes. The veteran hurler did not speak with reporters last night after appearing in a relief role. When approached today, he directed some harsh words at reporters. Harvey has struggled to a 5.87 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 in his 23 innings on the season.
- ESPN.com’s Buster Olney argues that the Giants ought to be preparing to listen to offers on ace lefty Madison Bumgarner if they can’t keep pace in the playoff race. As Olney explains, there aren’t many assets on hand in San Francisco that could bring back potential young building blocks. But if Bumgarner can get back to health by the trade deadline, he could be a monumental deadline piece, particularly given his history of postseason dominance and cheap 2019 option. It’s certainly an interesting possibility — albeit one the Giants no doubt hope they won’t have cause to consider in earnest.
- As his anticipated activation by the Braves draws near, Jose Bautista discussed his status with John Lott of The Athletic (subscription link). The veteran slugger says he was drawn by his trust in Atlanta GM Alex Anthopoulos — he called the organization “a place where I know where I stand” — and the fact that he likes the makeup of the current roster. Despite his high-profile status, Bautista says he hopes to “be just another player on the team” who’ll play hard no matter where and when he’s asked to. The piece documents an interesting series of chats between the former Blue Jays star and Lott, who long covered him in Toronto.

If Matt Harvey doesn’t like his new role in the bullpen dfa him. It’s not worth having negativity on a ML club. If I was the owner he’d be dfa’d IMMIDIATELY!
mikeyank55
That won’t happen. Cheap Wilpon won’t pay somebody to go to another team just as he won’t have his happy go lucky GM sit the kid down to straighten him out.
Without that Harvey will grow like cancer and the team will start showing the affects of it by mid-May.

Harvey gets DFA’d Someone will take him. He’s only on a 5m salary this year.
zoline
He’d only cost his new team the vet minimum. His current salary is irrelevant to other teams unless they are seeking to swing a trade.
YesInDidi
They’d have to wait for him to be released to be the vet minimum. If they claim him on waivers, they assume the contract
lasershow45
Yeah! Tell that SOB to get off the field for acting in a way I don’t like!
Ok Trump.
Harvey is an asshat. But he has too much potential to get DFA’d this early in the season and if you have common sense it’s been yelling at you ever since you hit “Publish”

Please don’t bring politics into this. Especially by using an offensive and wrong caricature used by an opposing party.

For all his potential Harvey’s done nothing for years. Eventually potential becomes he is what he is. I believe Harvey is done as a productive starter and is about to go down the path of prior and Brandon Webb.

Well said
lasershow45
See I’d tend to agree, but he’s 29 and coming back from TJ and TOS. TOS is the scary one, but it doesn’t mean he’s washed up (yet anyways)
More than likely that surgery is a bad sign, but he can still hit 94 and maybe he’ll catch on fire as a reliever. Wouldn’t be the first time. Definitely won’t be the last. But it’ll take time to find out… aka “potential”
lasershow45
Sorry but I call them like I see them and that’s exactly what he’s acting like.

Ummm…nope, don’t see the correlation here.

Leave the politics for Facebook. But oh how funny it is watching you Trump haters act SOOO incredibly miserable
Say Hey Now Kid
In Harvey’s defense I feel like he has been better than Matz. But Maybe the numbers prove me wrong

Harvey to Tampa for Wilson Ramos……Rays save about 4M (they like that)…..Mets get a better catcher than what they have (and in a contract year, Ramos has always done well)…..Harvey, who (really guys) has been a nothing burger for 2 years, gets out of the spotlight and can say whatever he wants, since in Tampa nobody cares……

It’s 4/25th, sort of a captain obvious statement by Olney
Having said that the front office will give this team every opportunity to show they should buy at July 31 or they will SELL. First up would not be Bum but rather Cueto. He doesn’t have a no-trade clause, the blisters that robbed him of his command in 17 are gone and he looks like 2016 Cueto. If you are the Brewers or the Twins who had problems attracting a front line starter this off-season he’s a good get on what will then be a 3+ yr deal that maybe the Giants even pay down a little to get a better return.
IF Bum gets moved it’s because they need to rebuild, he isn’t interested in that and nixes any extension talk and/or simply says he’d like to play closer to home which would be Atlanta. Probably more an off-season move vs deadline when those teams in cap hell are no longer.
IMO the Giants are sort an off the radar team this year, which is when they do their best work. I do not believe they will have the same patience with non-performing veterans this year as they have in the past. Mac Williamson has forced his way onto the roster and into a starting role, Strickland into the closer role and if they both keep performing, Pence or Melancon won’t have opportunities to get their jobs back. Bum missing 2 months creates a sense of urgency that is needed and I like how they’ve pitched, their infield can really catch the ball and if they can hit enough throughout the lineup, Duggar will come up to solidify with CF defensively. Stratton is approaching something more than SSS, he is a former #1 pick so pedigree is there and that’s the makings of a very 1-2-3 when Bum is back with Cueto. We shall see, it’s why they play the games.

Ortiz wasn’t in the Mitchell Report

But was Mitchell in the Ortiz Report?
Vedder80
He was not named. He also has admitted that he failed a PED test in 2003. So there is that…
jakem59
His name was leaked from the 2003 sample test, he said he had no idea why. He’s never said he used PED’s.
Vedder80
No. He said he failed a PED test.

I understand the logic behind the Giants moving Bumgarner for a haul of prospects, but doing so would go against the organization’s DNA. They don’t trade franchise heroes. More likely is making him a qualifying offer and taking the resulting compensatory draft pick. Smartest move? No, but SF fans lived 56 years between WS titles and most would rather he leave on his own terms than get sold off. In the end, it’s highly likely Bumgarner gets a massive contract and stays a Giant.
chicoescuela
Agreed..he’s not going anywhere but he’s signed thru 2019. They may agree to a new contract before then but I don’t sense any rush on either side

The worst Harvey has gotten in past 4 years the more and more the dodgers salivate over him. They know hes an easy fix but mets have refused to trade him. He goes to the dodgers he will be cy young material once Honeycutt gets his hands on him ,, any other team in the league he stands no chance. Options =dodgers be a stud, go somewhere else be under 500 or just retire.

Hey Javi-
Were you describing Harvey or Cheap Wilpon’s?
Vedder80
There are other pitching coaches in the league too. None of them can fix a nerve problem in the throwing shoulder though.

Bumgarner to the Yankees!
