Braves righty Julio Teheran left his outing today with what the team is calling “right upper trap tightness.” He had shown a concerning velocity drop before departing, as David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets. The 27-year-old Teheran entered the day with a 4.00 ERA in his 27 innings, while carrying a career-best 12.8% swinging-strike rate, but gave up three earned in his three frames. It seems generally promising that there’s a muscular explanation for Teheran’s sudden loss of velo, though of course that does not necessarily mean he’s out of the woods and we’ll have to await further word.
Here’s the latest on some other health situations around the league:
- The Athletics have placed southpaw Ryan Buchter on the DL, per a club announcement. He’ll be replaced on the active roster by Danny Coulombe. At this point, the team plans to shut Buchter down for at least ten days and possibly longer, as MLB.com’s Jane Lee tweets. The 31-year-old southpaw, who was acquired over the offseason, has been quite good thus far for the A’s. He’s carrying a 1.69 ERA with 9.3 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 over 10 2/3 innings.
- While the Giants will hold off on putting Mac Williamson on the DL, he’s in the concussion protocol at present, as manager Bruce Bochy informed reporters including Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group (Twitter link). In the meantime, the organization has brought fellow outfielder Austin Slater onto the active roster, creating space by sending reliever Josh Osich to the 10-day DL. It’s unclear at this point how long Slater will have in the majors, but he’ll surely be hoping to follow the same track as Williamson, who kept on raking after receiving a promotion. Slater owns a .358/.435/.642 slash with just six strikeouts in his 62 plate appearances on the year at Triple-A.
- Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson is beginning his rehab assignment tomorrow, as the team announced. He’ll open as a DH as he eases back into action, though the real test will come when he puts his throwing back on display at game speed. There’s similarly good news for the division-rival Orioles, who expect to send second baseman Jonathan Schoop on a brief rehab assignment next week, as Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com tweets. He has been out for two weeks with an oblique strain.
- The Nationals, who are still waiting for a trio of important players, gave some updates today. (Links to the Twitter feed of Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com.) Third baseman Anthony Rendon is reasonably close and is expected to return in relatively short order after a brief stint on the shelf. It’s not quite as rosy for outfielder Adam Eaton, who has seemingly had some ups and downs in rehabbing his ankle issues, but — GM Mike Rizzo emphasized — also has not experienced any setbacks. As for second baseman Daniel Murphy, who has yet to play at all following offseason knee surgery, there’s still no timeline for a return.
- A number of other players are already coming off of the DL. The Reds have activated righty David Hernandez and the Mariners have brought back first baseman Ryon Healy. Both were relatively significant offseason acquisitions for their organizations. Meanwhile, the Rays activated infielder Matt Duffy and the Rangers did the same with righty Tony Barnette.

That really stinks… Teheran has always been volatile but he’s really the only established member besides Mccarthy and folty. If he goes down, that really hurts our already low, yet climbing, playoff chances.
TradeAcuna
I was really hoping he was hurt and had to go on the DL. He is terrible along aside with everyone else in the rotation, other than McCarthy, who is not a future piece.

Wow, what total class you have. Your parents did a HORRIBLE job. Shame on them
its_happening
Guys, he didn’t WANT him to be hurt. He hoped the reason for his ineffectiveness was because he was trying to pitch through an injury rather than just being plain bad. He did not wish any ill will fellas…
reflect
Yeah he worded that terribly but this is how I read it as well.
CowboysoldierFTW
Agreed. I don’t think he was wishing I’ll will just stating he was hoping it was a physical issue and not him just declining.

People on here jump at any chance they can get to virtue signal
Zach725
You’re an idiot. Teheran might not be a big time ace, but he is still a good pitcher who can pitch above average.
pustule bosey
I really hope mac is ok, he has really been a sparkplug since coming up and most of us giant fans look forward to his at bats.
wiggysf
Giants need a Cutch Slater Williamson outfield. Jackson and Pence need to go, at least to the bench. I love Pence, but he just isn’t producing.
snotrocket
Agreed
bucketbrew35
I’m hoping Teheran is OK. His career is certainly a maddening one. I remember him being touted as the next big thing before and when he first broke into the bigs. Ever since his performance has been a rollercoaster.
camdenyards46
Remember all the trade talk about him at the deadline like two years ago…
Solaris601
Any idea of the nature of Buchter’s injury? The article states that the A’s put him on the DL, but there was no mention of why.
sacball
he came out of the Texas game with shoulder stiffness

Yeah, some bad writing from MLBTR here. Eh, pretty sure this is one of those sites that has the writer be their own editor (one of the worst things about new media is the lack of having another person look over the posts and edit them accordingly before they are posted – they only do it if you call them out on it after its up – sigh – way to kill off a job, 2018media)

You don’t have to read these articles you know.

Josh Donaldson coming back soon. Too little too late for the Jays though. As we heard in the pages in Spring Training, the Jays would get off to a good start but falter due to the starting rotation and then be out of it by trade deadline time.
That means if the Jays Mgmt is smart, which I seriously question, they need Josh DOnaldson as healthy as possible tos ell him off by the deadline.
FYI we also heard in these pages in spring training that Ngoepe wasn’t MLB level, neither was Grichuk or DIaz. All those previous scouting reports appear to be very accurate. There is a serious professional scouting or decision making issue within the Jays Mgmt team. The Jays amateur scouting remains quite solid.
It is possible that Mgmt will try to take the heat off themselves and look at firing Gibbons or the coaches. The problem lies with Shaprio and Atkins alone.
If you don’t beleive me look at the starting roation that is starting to fall apart with bad outing after bad outing. It will happen as was predicted here in these pages in spring training.
Fire Atkins now.
Shapiro must get rid of his phoney longterm competativeness organizational model. It is a joke and false. It won’t work to bring a winner to Toronto for years and years.
I like Drombroski and Cashman. Rebuilds in 1 or 2 years not 5 or 10 or 14 years in Cleveland’s case.
Anti-Tank
How could you justify any other course of action? A full scale rebuild in a resurgent market with a third of the league already engaging in rebuilds, while you are attempting stadium renovations in Toronto and with the spring training facility, and with rumors of ownership potentially selling. How does any of that add up to Toronto being in the right situation for a tear it down style rebuild as you propose? How do the fans benefit from the next 3 years of no playoff hope on the basis of prospect potential when baseball has the deepest and richest history in sports of finding stars late in the draft compared to the top end of it? This is the difference between a scout and a general manager or president of baseball operations jimmertree, all facets of the organization need to be constantly kept in check without overly focusing on any aspect to an extreme. There is no guaranteed blue print to success in sports. Luck plays a huge part when the skill gap between teams and organizations are so tight.
jimmertee
I could justify that course of action easily. WHo cares about the rest of the league. Who cares about studium renovations. Who cares about spring training renovations.
Good scouting and Shapiro’s track record are clearly saying that there is no hope of playoffs in the next 3 years at least.
Dombroski and Cashman would have non of it. The goal is to win and now.
It is not about keeping all facets of the organization in balance or check. What a load of trash. The goal is to win at the MLB level now regardless of what is happening elsewhere in the organization and league.
Does that means quality HOF GM’s like Pat Gillick did it on luck?. No, they did it on great drafting, development and trades. Gifted skill not luck.
Anti-Tank
Who cares about the rest of the league? I do when an 90 loss season has me picking 11 in the draft instead of 16 with a near playoff birth season. In that season where I can sell hope to a fan base that has seen post season play in 4 seasons over the last 2 and a half decades could lead to an extra $9-$16 million in revenue I receive due to increased ticket revenue as an owner which then leads to quality of life improvements across all facets of my organization leading to increases in player development, performance, and injury prevention. You act like projecting 18 year old high school arms is an exact science which it hardly is and never accounts for potential lost due to eventual injury. The goal is sustained success on every level to make rather than the flash in the pan one year wonder teams you seem to preach for. Do you realize how damaging it is to a franchise to lose triple digit games for multiple years are you ignorant that not all franchises fan bases and popularity are equal and not all can perform within the same set of parameters? If you followed the jays over the last two decades you would understand how stadium renovations would truly help the on field product.
its_happening
Anti-Tank, are you serious? Stadium renovations? No, the organization nearly died trying to copy the Oakland Athletics model when Ricciardi fired some excellent scouts and development people. Despite falling short of the playoffs, Gord Ash at least had some good drafts. Oakland’s teams in the early 2000’s were good because of Alderson’s staff, not Beane. That is an overlooked fact.
None of that had any to do with stadium renovations. None. No baseball decision was won or lost because Toronto didn’t have an open concept stadium that many fans are clamoring for. By the way, the weather in Toronto has been awful. Many games would have been cancelled this season.
As for what Jimmer said, here’s the problem; the Shapiro-Atkins regime will underestimate the timeline to ensure safety in their position. If they say 4-5 years, they mean 2-3. But they have owners that need profit. The Maple Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs and that will hurt hockey ratings. They are praying Winnipeg can draw eyes to the TV. That is why you see different Jays merchandise (and Raptors) in order to create revenue they are losing on the hockey deal.
Jays have to hit reset in two months. Jays fans are optimistic about Vlad and Bichette. They’ve seen what can happen by looking at their hockey and basketball teams. Jays management can sell a rebuild to the fanbase now. Is Atkins the right guy? My gut says no. He will have a chance to prove people wrong. If he’s as good a GM as he is a dresser, he will go down in flames….
jimmertee
Wow, Anti-Tank. I know whom I’m talking too now. Thanks for responding. It am serious when I say that I am honored M.
What if I can show you how to scout better? To the point where projecting is close to an exact science? I can do that despite what the trolls say and perhaps you already know. I can prove it too. My track record here on MLBTR for the Jays is nothing short of remarkable. But it is not about me.
I would like to sit down and have a coffee with you to discuss our different goals. Mine to win now at any cost and yours to be longterm “successfu” but perhaps giving up on being a winner. -at least to me that is what it looks like.
I will stop criticzing the Jays Mgmt in exchange to a coffee? At the stadium? I can DM you M on twitter. SheElohim yevarach otha.
Anti-Tank
Wow. I sincerely hope you are ok.
jimmertee
You mean Anti-Tank is not acutally Mark Shapiro??? I thought for sure I was talking to Mark. Why else would anyone care about the underlings at the expense of winning.
Wait -a-minute. A good president can care for the underlings and win too. Like Cashman or Dombrowski.
Anti-Tank
You mean like how dombrowski did in Detroit gutting a farm system for titles with the greatest position player at the time…oh wait you’re right both non title winning gms with infitesimal budgets are really raising the bar. Get out of here goof it’s why you are commenting and without a scout job.
jimmertee
There is never any reason to call anyone names on this blog. Be professional please.
Dave Dombrowski, 8 Playoffs, 3 Pennants, 1 World series. so far.
Brian Cashman 16 playoffs 12 AL East titles, 10 ALDS, 6 ALCS and 4 World Series Championships
Rogers has more money than the Yanks, Tigers and Boston put together. No reason why they can buy what they need. They certainly aren’t professionally scouting well.
As for my track record, in these pages it is very accurate. This years Jays correct calls alone are: the good start to the season then fade, Travis not hitting and never being a lead off guy, terrible Diaz trade, terrible Grichuk trade, Smoak back to himself, Solarte a good add but exposed as a middle infielder, Pillar will be Pillar, Pearce will be a good piece when not hurt, Estrada will regess further as his back wears out, Happ will regress further, Gracia will win 8-10 games, Stroman 13+ wins and Sanchez is the wildcard becuase his finger is not healed so he is trying to get by by throwing changeups not the curve, Jays are sellers at the deadline. #Scoutseyes
its_happening
Jimmer I’ve laid out why Rogers is skimping on the payroll for the Jays. You are correct; Rogers has a ton of money. Add the $50 mil free money every franchise received this year plus the unwillingness to rebuild, going all out in free agency could have been justified.
Scouting has been an issue since the JP Ricciardi regime took over. I agree with you 100%. It’s a big reason why they struggled in the 21st century.
Lots of people get after you about the scoutseyes stuff. Truth is too many Jays fans are blind Leaf fans with Jays jerseys on, listening to the Rogers owned media slurp the Rogers owned baseball club. Too much conflict of interest when it comes to properly assessing the team.
Anti-Tank
what would you have done this off season to help the Jays compete with the Yankees and Red Sox?
#scoutseyes
jimmertee
I would have blown up the MLB Jays roster and tanked. I wouldn’t have attempted to strengthen the team for a “phoney” run at 2018.
Off the top of my head, I was calling for trades of Smoak and JD and Happ while their value was high[er]. Even in the minors the Jays are weak with high ceiling rotation power arm prospects, so my focus would have been acquiring arms and as high a level prospects as the marketplace would allow..
Since there would be no chance at winning anything this year, I would have [cheaply] signed Cabrera, Bautista and Goins as fill-ins for another year. Looking at it now, the Jays would have been further ahead with this guys than having Grichuk and Diaz. Cut Maile, Ngeope. Not sign Estrada or Garcia. etc etc.
Anti-Tank
I miss Doc Halladay, Vernon Wells and the rest of the early 2000’s Jays too. Remember being super pumped that time we finally came in second in the AL East?
its_happening
Diaz should have been banished to the bench for his weak play on D, let alone poor at bats.
jimmertee
Diaz is a AAA player not MLB quality. That is why St Louis eventually moved him to 2nd away from SS and then sent him down becuase the MLB level pitchers exposed his swing which he couldn’t correct for. He is a dead red hitter with major holes in his swing. .200 would be a good average for him.
Terrible trade for the Jays. We need accountabiility for the executives that made the decision to trade for such a poor player. And yes, others did have him scouted as a poor player before the deal was made. The Jays screwed up.
its_happening
Yep. No arm from SS, no range either, and he’d chase sliders all day long.
