Saturday: Logan is expected to be out six weeks according to GM David Stearn, via a tweet from Haudricort. The timeline for Miley is thought to be two to four weeks.
Thursday, 4:41pm: Tom Haudricort of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel tweets that while the Brewers are calling Boone’s injury a triceps strain, there’s “some concern” that it’s in the area of last season’s lat tear. More testing will be needed, but it’s “a DL situation in any event.”
Additionally, Haudricort adds that while Miley is not expected to go on the major league roster at this time, GM David Stearns is working with Miley’s agent to keep him in the organization.
10:38am: Two Brewers lefties have learned more about their injury situations, as MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy reports (Twitter links). Rotation candidate Wade Miley has been diagnosed with a slight groin tear, while reliever Boone Logan has a mild triceps strain.
There’s more than just an injury at play for Miley, who can opt out of his minors deal today if not added to the MLB roster. There’s also the matter of an upcoming $100K retention bonus for the Article XX(B) free agent. It’s not clear at this point how much time he’s expected to miss.
As McCalvy notes, it seems that Miley’s representatives will need to hash things out with the Brewers. The veteran hurler says he hopes to remain with the organization after a solid showing this spring. It had been expected that he would crack the rotation to open the season. His existing deal would promise him $2.5MM with as much as $3.2MM more via incentives in the majors.
As for Logan, who inked a $2.5MM guaranteed contract over the winter, the timeline is also yet to be determined. He generally expressed optimism that the injury will not be a significant one, though skipper Craig Counsell tells reporters (including Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel; Twitter link) that Logan will be on the DL to open the season.
The news, particularly with regard to Miley, creates some added questions for a Milwaukee staff that has been the subject of much debate all winter long. Many have wondered why the organization has not pursued further rotation help, while the club has indicated optimism with the unit on hand. Junior Guerra now seems to be in good shape to crack the rotation, while pitchers such as Brent Suter, Brandon Woodruff, and perhaps veteran Yovani Gallardo now have additional opportunity to sneak into the Opening Day starting five — assuming, at least, that the Brewers don’t take another look at outside possibilities.

Because that’s exactly what the brewers needed

They were in trouble banking on Miley either way. Unreal they didn’t do enough to improve their pitching.

Miley is not that bad. I always liked him in Boston. Look at where he has pitched, except for his season at Seattle. Homer/offensive friendly stadiums and he’s done fairly well and lots of innings.
Doubt many Arizona/Sox fans have any complaints. he takes the ball every 5th day, has a nice move to 1st, will work quickest pace anyone has seen and takes a no holds barred. Throw back approach to the game. Shame others with MORE talent can’t do half of that with his intensity on the mound.

DBacks fan here and I loved watching Miley pitch in Arizona. He was a consistent innings eater who didn’t have the best stuff but knew how to get his out. He’s just a few tweaks away from getting back to being that guy again and it’s sad to see this injury come up at this time. Good luck to him going forward!
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
Didn’t like him in Boston at all. Seattle is NOT an offensively friendly stadium.

You must not have read it correctly
It said except from Seattle
B-Strong
Sox fan. Did not like watch his Jeckle and Hyde performances. We already had Buchholz for that and having another was frustrating as could be. He was generally due to give up a ton of runs if he made it to the 6th inning.

Oops.

I am so glad him and Ubaldo are no longer on the Orioles.

I can’t agree more with you
brewers214
They are going to regret not signing one of the top 4 free agent SP

I so gotta disagree with you about that this team has number of guys that are knocking on the door to the majors and will actually be very good. Remember the rebuild was shorten up by a couple of years because of the pitching. There is going to be some players that are going to come up and when they do they will stay. I know some think Stern has gotten lucky on a lot of trades I believe it’s cause he is good. I can’t see giving 50 million to Cobb for 4 years when it that same span guys like Corbin, Kirby, Woodruff, Chacin, Williams, and Ortiz will be better then him in that span. They also are going to be able to cover in the bullpen too. They have guys ready to step up and be successful like Williams,Derby, Houser, Hoover, Brady, Ramirez, Griep, Perrin, and Webb. Last year we had probably 3 guys in the bullpen that didn’t contribute at all and shouldn’t been in the majors. Honestly more worried for our catching this year then our pitching at this point I want Betancourt over Bandy. There wasn’t a Sabathia or Greineke out there this year either to trade for. I’m sorry but Archer is not that kinda pitcher, they would have wanted probably Corbin and Ortiz with 3 more players. Corbin alone will become a better pitcher

You…are…delusional. The Brewers have difference makers in the minors, just numbers. Difference makers are what you need to win, not just guys.
twentyforty
*dont have difference makers
MilTown8888
Maybe. They could have gone 1/$15m on Lynn and gotten him, that would have been a good idea.
Cobb was an overpay. Arrieta was too rich in aav for the for the Brewers tastes. They would not have gone to 6 years for Darvish. They might be worse in 2018 but will have more room to extend their own young players because they didnt pay for Darvish/Arrieta/Cobb. I can live with that.
Sconnie
Are there any middle tier free agent pitchers left to sign?
javier 3
There is John Lackey, Scott Feldman, Ubaldo Jimenez, and Matt Garza that are left for FA starter that have a chance of being at least ok
tylerall5
None of them would be ready by opening day, however.
randomness lez
Take it from a Baltimore fan………..when you already have Gallardo and Miley, adding Ubaldo isn’t an answer.
jay13
Oh god, not Matt Garza. That ship has sailed. He stole money from the brewers while in Milwaukee.
javier 3
There are some minor league FA starters like Jarred Cozart, Christian Friedrich, Tim Cooney, Jeff Locke, Kyle Kendrick and Josh Collmenter who could all have a chance of being good
Jack nuts
I think the brewers staff is in decent shape. only thing I would change is releasing Gallardo and putting Corbin Burnes on the active roster. Colorado springs is an awful place to develop their young talent. Burnes is a better upgrade over any of their fifth guys in the rotation.
jbigz12
You know what’s worse than developing a pitcher facing AAA hitters in Colorado Springs? Trying to develop a pitcher in the Mlb when you’re competing for a playoff spot.
MilTown8888
That’s not necessarily true. The brewers have had guys getting shelled in Co Springs but they brought them up anyway and they pitched great.
Josh Hader, for example:
2016 AA — 0.95 era in 57ip, 11.53 k/9
2016 AAA- 5.21 era in 69ip, 11.48 k/9
2017 AAA- 5.37 era in 52ip, 8.83 k/9
2017 bigs- 2.08 era in 47.2ip, 12.84 k/9

By May 1, you will realize that Milwaukee has the worst staff in the NL.
SupremeZeus
Miley is going to have to accept a AAA assingment and $100k retention bonus or he will be released by the Crew today. Simple as that and no, the Brewers starting staff is not in decent shape (even if Miley was healthy).
siddfinch1079
Thanks, Mr. Stearns!
siddfinch1079
What happened Mr. Stearns?? “Wade Miley’s opt-out date has been pushed back, Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports reports on Twitter. The southpaw seemed likely to make the Brewers’ rotation before suffering a torn groin that’s expected to keep him out two to four weeks. Miley could have opted out of his contract tomorrow after being informed that he wouldn’t make the opening day roster, but GM David Stearns apparently worked out a deal with his agent. Miley’s opt-out date has been extended until the point at which he’s able to start pitching again.”.
jjgreedy
All this talk about the pitching staff trouble. Wasn’t this exact unit a top NL staff last year? I’m pretty sure starting pitching was one of the strong suits of the Crew last year. I know Nelson is hurt but they got better by getting rid of Garza and Junior is finally healthy. Let the first half play out. We might be pleasantly surprised.
Ry.the.Stunner
Not really. They had a 4.10 rotation ERA, good for 5th in the NL. Not terrible, but not top, and that also includes Chase Anderson pitching above his head.
stevewpants
Forget the mid tier starters go out and spend a little cash on Holland and add a starter during the season via trade.
mrwisconsin
I kind of like this. Especially with Knebel’s spring struggles. I know Hader is the hopeful to close if Knebel can’t, but why not make the pen even stronger with Holland for a year or two. Then maybe stretch hader out to start??
Ry.the.Stunner
Might as well. Holland can be had for pretty cheap at this point I bet
Gwynning's Anal Lover
I feel bad for Miley. I’ve been there before. Cheated on my girl and she practically tore it right off. That taught me.
Danthemilwfan
Miley sucks
mattblaze13
What happened to zach wheeler? I heard on the radio that he was optioned to the minors
stubby66
There is talk that Gallardo is still on 40 man because of possible trade. Kinda hoping it’s with San Fran and that either Broxton or Aguilar are involved
