Reds infielder Dilson Herrera has been outrighted to Triple-A after clearing waivers, per C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic (via Twitter). The Reds have since announced the move. Herrera will remain in MLB camp for the time being but obviously will not be expected to make the active roster out of Spring Training.
Circumstances have combined to change Herrera’s once-promising outlook in the Cincinnati organization. He struggled to a .264/.312/.397 slash in 264 Triple-A plate appearances last year before shoulder surgery ended his season. In the meantime, the club not only oversaw the surprising emergence of Scooter Gennett but has also seen the development of other infield talent.
That said, Herrera is still just 24 years of age and should have every opportunity of regaining his trajectory. He has mostly produced quality offensive numbers in the upper minors, including a .289/.345/.460 slash in over a thousand total trips to the plate at Triple-A.
Herrera, who was acquired in the 2016 deal that sent Jay Bruce to the Mets, will now have too earn his way back onto the MLB roster. The Reds will no doubt be glad to have held onto Herrera, who is out of options, after deciding not to keep him in the majors to open the year.

Goes to show how young middle infielders are no longer as much of a premium as they once were

Or maybe Dilson Herrera is just bad?
Michael Chaney
I think this is more likely

I’m surprised he didn’t hold enough interest for a team to take a flier. There’s probably worse utility inf bouncing around.
chri
He’s probably a 2B only, IIRC he was moved off SS in the Pittsburgh system because of a bad arm, no way he could play 3B if that was the case.
jbigz12
Yeah that’s true. 2b prospects are typically the least regarded to begin with. If he can’t cover another spot I suppose there isn’t much value there.
redsfan48
His shoulder injury (he still can’t play the field and likely wouldn’t be ready to by opening day) is probably the entire reason that other teams passed on Herrera
darave92
Mets almost sent nimmo instead if him…. dodged a bullet.

And most Mets fans were pissed that we just traded the second baseman of the future
Ruben_Tomorrow 2
He really looked like he had the potential to be an everyday starter. I don’t think Nimmo will amount to much, but they certainly picked the better player to trade away.

Wow seems like forever ago when the Pirates traded him as part of a package for Marlon Byrd
Phillies2017
I would imagine the reason he cleared was the fact that he’s out of minor league options.
Personally, however, I believe it would have been a worth while gamble for a team to claim him and place him on the disabled list as insurance for an injury to somebody in the infield.
kahnkobra
can’t fill in for someone if he himself is on the DL with a bum shoulder

He was horrible when reds traded for him and has been worthless since. Way down on depth chart now. I think he’ll be lucky to match his major league abs for the rest of his career.

He’s already played in MLB a little bit when he was 21 with the Mets. He his .215 with 6 homers, 17 RBI’s, and 2 SB. That’s not to bad for 21 years old I think he could play in MLB right now!!
rxbrgr
The recent shoulder injury may gave did him in.

Basically the Mets got Jay Bruce for a minor league deal of Marlon Byrd. Nice.

rack up yet another poor return for the Reds from trading their contending core from 5+ years ago. Duvall is the only real standout, Schebler has been respectable.. rest have just been substandard to average, or haven’t cracked the bigs at all

…I left out Suarez, although it could be argued as to whether or not Alfredo Simon was a major component of those teams
gocincy
Suarez?
hiflew
You have to count DeSclafani too. They got him from the Marlins for Latos. He has been hurt a lot, but has been very good to great when healthy.

Dilson was traded to the reds because he could not get along with the Las Vegas 51s manager Wally Blackmon had a shouting match next day he was gone because Blackmon didn’t control his players he was released. Sad how ball players egos get in the way
DockEllisDee
off topic but after hearing it suggested I’m becoming more and more of a fan of moving Suarez back to his natural position of SS and having Senzel remain at 3B once he’s brought up. After seeing his presence over there this spring it’s easy to see that he’ll soon be mentioned among the best in the league. Between he and Winker (who I hope to see leading off before too long) the offense measures to be more efficient than last year’s. As for 2B leave Gennett alone he’s hit at every level and is an all around asset.

Mets should pick him up, I was kind of mad to see him get traded that year cause their was a lot of high hope for seeing him and Rosario together in the infield. But if the Mets pick him up maybe he can get back to his potential n see what happens from their.
jbigz12
He cleared waivers. Clearly weren’t interested in a reunion.
