The Padres rotation — like other parts of the roster — came with some surprises. As Dennis Lin of the Athletic tweets, Joey Lucchesi is going to take the ball for the team’s second game of the season. And while veteran righty Tyson Ross didn’t open the season on the active roster, he’s expected to be added in short order, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune adds on Twitter. Acee notes that there’ll be some competition early in the season to see who’ll be able to stick as a long-term piece in the unsettled rotation mix, noting that Lucchesi has a chance to stay if he performs well.
Lucchesi, 24, was a fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft and will be the first pitcher taken that season to appear in the Majors. He ranks ninth in a stacked Padres farm system according to both MLB.com and Baseball America, having turned in a combined 2.20 ERA with 9.6 K/9, 2.1 BB/9 and 50 percent ground-ball rate in 139 innings between Class-A Advanced and Double-A last season.
More from the NL West…
- Justin Turner is moving closer to swinging a bat, but he’s not yet been cleared to do so, reports Andy McCullough of the L.A. Times. The Dodgers’ third baseman was diagnosed with a nondisplaced fracture in his wrist late in Spring Training after being hit by a pitch, and Turner tells McCullough that he was initially projected to require two to three weeks of rest before being cleared to swing at all. McCullough writes that Turner will be out until at least May, though his exact timeline remains rather nebulous at present. Turner says that upon being diagnosed with the fracture, he was told the recovery could take anywhere from four to 10 weeks depending on how his wrist responds. “There really is no timetable,” says Turner.
- The Diamondbacks may not need to fill in for outfielder Steven Souza for quite as long as had been feared, as Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports on Twitter that Souza’s pectoral strain is progressing better than anticipated. That’s promising near-term news for the D-backs, but the team’s long-term outlook remains subject to quite a lot of uncertainty, as Buchanan explores in a subscription piece. The key question, perhaps, is whether the organization can find common ground on a second extension with Paul Goldschmidt. As Buchanan explains, there’s no real indication at this point whether that’ll take place, though CEO Derrick Hall does tell him that “neither side feels an urgency” to explore a new deal at the moment.

Best of luck to Lucchesi tonight. First of several highly ranked Padres pitching prospects to get a call to the big leagues. With about 4 top tier ace quality prospects, and 3-4 mid rotation quality prospects (Lucchesi being on the latter group), hopefully at least 2-3 of the total group turn out to be regular major league pitchers. It’s insane to think ALL of the prospects reach the labels placed on them because of their potential. I’m a fan of calling up Lucchesi this early (as opposed to holding him in the minors due to the free agency clock starting), because at some point, you have to figure out which of those prospects will actually be able to stick in the majors. Can’t just hold them all down, bring them all up as a group in 2020 and expect the Padres to be good. Some don’t work out. Best of luck to Lucchesi, and hoping he sticks around….. and hoping his offense can give him some resemblance of run support (unlikely)

4 top tier ace quality prospects? A 55 fv prospect is not “top tier ace quality”…
Kwflanne
Sorry, didn’t google FV ratings to write a reply… I just went off what I know. If you are saying Gore, Morejon, Baez aren’t top tier prospects with ace potential… I can pretty much go ahead and disregard any other comments you make.
chesteraarthur
Ace potential and what you said are not at all the same thing. But yes, please disregard anyone who provides any facts that don’t fit your narrative. It’s much easier than admitting you were wrong.

Quantrill too

Gore is ace material
The others are not

Don’t forget Espinoza. When he was in the Red Sox system they were saying he was the second coming of Pedro Martinez. The TJ surgery set him back, but he is still only 19 or 20 and most guys come back as good or better after the TJ. That is a 4th TOR starter prospect. I would be ecstatic to have that many good pitching prospects in the O’s system.
jbigz12
It’s too early to know if they’ll be TOR guys or not. Quantrill, morejon, gore etc. certainly have the talent though.
outinleftfield
Facts? It is no secret that their top starting pitching prospects are a few years away, but they are exceptional.
Gore was compared during spring training to Kershaw. He is the best left-handed pitching prospect in baseball. Before his TJ surgery, Espinoza was compared to Pedro. Baez throws 98 and has insane control. 9/1 K/BB ratio. Morejon was an $11 million bonus baby and he is projected as a #2 starter.
The definition of an Ace is malleable. To most, it means the guy that is the OD starter. All 4 of those guys could develop to be that guy. To some it means stoppers. Guys that are HOF material. Kershaw, Sale, Scherzer, Verlander, and a handful of others. At least 2 of the guys in the Padres system, Gore and Espinoza, could become that kind of player too. After seeing them pitch last season in the Midwest League, I would not count out Baez or Morejon either.
Quantrill, Lucchesi, Lauer, Allen, Nix, and Lockett are all pretty close to the majors, AA or above, and all project as average to above average starters. Middle of the rotation guys. #2, #3, or #4.
If one of the guys in the first tier and one of the guys in the 2nd tier live up to projections, that is a pretty good return. Several of them may become relievers and a few will flame out That is still a great group of prospects. By far the best in the game. I WISH that my O’s had that type of pitching in the system.
I don’t see where he was wrong in any way.
thekid9
True. Gore will be an ace, the others no. Need to cut down on hyperbole in here. And there should be a character limit.

“… because at some point, you have to figure out which of those prospects will actually be able to stick in the majors.”
That “at some point” could have been 3 weeks from now and the Padres wouldn’t be any worse off. It’s not like they would be waiting another year to call him up. And no, it doesn’t matter if the Padres have plenty of good pitching prospects.
mlbfan1978
Anyone hear who is being optioned to make room for Lucchesi?
Long Duc Dong
Does it matter? It’s the Padres
mlbfan1978
Yes it matters. Padres are a team on the rise and to those who follow them we see several players on the roster taking up spots that we would like to see players that will be part of the future. Go troll somewhere else.
Long Duc Dong
No I will troll you mr serious lol
outinleftfield
What a sad life you must have that you come on a baseball blog just to troll without ever adding anything of interest to the conversation.

Your right so so so sad

My guess is Spangenberg or Lopez but I’d rather get rid of Ellis or Spangenberg myself
mlbfan1978
I’m hoping Lyles myself but would be fine with Ellis as well.
Nolenabs83
I’m pretty sure he made the team out of spring training so they won’t need to make a roster move
mlbfan1978
He didn’t. They are adding him today. Just haven’t made the move official yet.

Rowan Wick was outrighted off the 40 man roster.
lowtalker1
That means nothing. That spot was already taken
outinleftfield
Just telling you what Dennis Lin said about the move.
RedRooster
Padres had a full 40-man roster even with Wick being outrighted. They have to DFA someone else or put someone on the 60-day DL to clear a spot for Lucchesi.
outinleftfield
Just passing on what Dennis Lin said. “… Ross is staying in extended spring training until at least April 6th and Rowan Wick was outrighted to El Paso to make room for Lucchesi to pitch on Friday”.
RedRooster
Then Dennis Lin was wrong. Wick was outrighted on Wednesday and his roster spot went to one of Cimber/Ellis/Lopez.
lowtalker1
If it was coredo it’ll be szuzer
Lopez or spang
Or climber
CowboysoldierFTW
I know zip about the Padres prospects but I hope this dude kills it. Baseball needs young prospects setting it on fire. Game feels a little stale right now.
Phillies2017
I love Joey Luchessi!
I can recall he was among the league leaders in almost every stat category in the NCAA the year he was drafted and was grossly underrated throughout the draft.
Based on control, durability and the fact that he throws lefty, he could be a long term #2 or #3.
RedRooster
Update: Raffy Lopez optioned to AAA El Paso, Colin Rea transferred to 60-day DL
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Nice, we’ll finally get to see the first of many Padres prospects begin to reach the major league level. I imagine they’ll keep Lucchesi up for at least a little while, so maybe we’ll be able to see him make multiple starts.
nutznboltz
It seems to me that the Padre prospects seem to be very much overrated. Renfroe has power but really disappointed at the plate and in the field last year. Margot was suppose to be a great outfielder. I thought he was very average in the field last year. Hedges was suppose to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. He is a horrible hitter and sure hasn’t shown his supposed greatness defensively. Color me unimpressed with the supposed great minor league system.
nutznboltz
I think Franchy Cordero is a much better outfielder than Margot.
nutznboltz
Don’t get me started on Jankowski and Spangenberg.
