Do the Mariners try to sign Nelson Cruz to an extension during the season or let him become a free agent at the end of this season?

I’d assume they do something like they did with Segura, see how he’s performing in June, or just mid-summer.

The odds of a guy having a WAR of 2 on just a few weeks are very low.

That’s not how baseball works. You don’t get to pick when those Wins happen. If you have 1 WAR over the first month, you likely haven’t changed the outcome of exactly 1 baseball game. Also, you are assuming that any player being held down due to service time has exactly a replacement level player starting ahead of them.

Sorry I have not been posting on here much I lost my password and it took me a while to figure out how to change it. Anyway I have been discussing for some time a new salary structure that would take place after the next lockout (which I have predicted for 2020). There is little debate that players salary’s have reached a ridiculous level. Many players sign a big contract and get magically hurt right after. David Wright and Carl Pavano come to mind. My structure would eliminate these contracts weighing teams down.
All players salary would be based 100÷% on performance. Say for a position player you would get a certain about of money weekly or biweekly (not sure how these guys get paid) for how many hits runs doubles etc they get per pay period. Also wins would factor in making the game more interesting by having money at stake. A lot of players do not care about winning (ECT Joey Votto) so this would light a fire under them.
Pitchers would do the same. Innings pitched strike outs would be positive and any home runs given up loss ect would take away salary. Relief pitchers would have to be given a different pay scale due to lesser innings.
I have given much thought to this system but the one thing I am lacking is the dollar values. I figure some nerd on here can put a graph together or Excel sheet and we can start snow balling ideas on money.
A few other odds and ends to mention in my system as well.
*Any player hurt for the year will be given a $50’000 salary for the year including taxes. I understand many of these guys have families and it would be unfair to give them nothing.
*Charity work will give extra money for these guys working with kids elderly whatever. Encourage good in the community and I’m all for it.
*Practice time will be given an hourly wage since no stats will be accumulated. Capped at an unknown figure per pay period.
*Player salary capped at an unknown figure to prevent teams from suffering catastrophic losses. I understand there will be fluxuation in my model and this is a safety mechanism to prevent a massive loss.
Anyway Jason I am interested to hear your thoughts or if u have thought of anything similar. Anyone interested in coming up with a dollar figure for this system I would be interested in brainstorming with. I have no problem sharing my ideas with most people out there. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.

This proposal is breathtaking in its stupidity. I truly hope you never get hurt doing your job.

“Sorry I have not been posting on here as much…” is how that post began. Dude, don’t ever be sorry for that!

pepesilvia….after all of that your forgot one thing….the MLBPA, including current leadership, has made one thing abundantly clear for many years. There will never be non-guaranteed contracts, Unless your plan is to tear down the MLB and MLBPA as it is and have a several year void you may as well print out your plan, place it in the toilet and flush.

Joey Votto doesn’t care about winning? Your entire post makes me think maybe you have lead in your pipes. It screams tl;dr but like a horrific accident I couldn’t look away and kept reading. The spectrum is strong in this one lads!
Cat Mando
DockEllisDee……I had a back and forth with a guy who, once he learned of Votto’s desire to stay in Cincy, considered him to be an undesirable player. In his mind Votto should only be concerned with joining a winning club and all of the things like family, happiness and loyalty make for a weak ballplayer. Needless to say I walked away from that convo.

If the dodgers would eat all of kemps salary to dump him on an AL team, why wouldn’t they just release him? Unless you meant eat all his salary and hope to get something in return (which is not the way your response reads, at least to me)?

Lol @ Midgets and Madres fans thinking spring training has anything to do with real baseball! Hahahahaha!
