Giants To Designate Jarrett Parker, Select Derek Holland

By Jeff Todd | March 26, 2018 at 6:23pm CDT

The Giants have designated outfielder Jarrett Parker for assignment, per John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (via Twitter). His roster spot was needed for the addition of lefty Derek Holland, who’ll make the rotation after signing over the winter as a minor-league free agent.

Parker, 29, has seen 382 total MLB plate appearances over the past three seasons and generally acquitted himself well. He has also been rather productive at the highest level of the minors and had a strong showing this spring, with a .220/.333/.561 slash (though also twenty strikeouts in his 48 plate appearances).

Still, the Giants elected to risk losing Parker rather than carrying him on the Opening Day Roster. It seems the organization will instead keep veteran Gregor Blanco as its lone left-handed-hitting outfielder to open the season, unless it goes instead with youngster Steven Duggar.

As for Holland, it has been clear for some time that he was destined to earn a job in San Francisco this year. As the Giants lost several rotation pieces, Holland worked 15 solid spring innings, over which he allowed seven earned runs and recorded 18 strikeouts against five walks. He’ll earn a $1.5MM salary with as much as $2.5MM more in incentives.

I’m happy Holland made it. Rooting for him to make it. In case anyone is wondering what his 2018 Spring Training stats were, to make the team’s fifth Starter:

    In 5 games: 4.20 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 18/5 K/BB ratio in 15 IP

That stat line being described as “solid” is probably accurate. It will probably be solidly representative of his contributions. They will probably get a 1.47 whip out of him, which is why he had to accept a minor league contract to begin with. He will probably give up more than a hit an inning. SF can have him. Wouldnt want him on my team.

All ST stats are small samples. No one knows yet what Holland will contribute. He wouldn’t be the first guy to make a come back from multiple injuries nor the first to fail in the attempt. Your post smacks of one from either a newby to the game or one whose dislike of either Holland or the Giants is clouding his objectivity.

But then there’s his ‘not-so-small’ career sample…laced with mediocrity.

good luck JP, you are going to do a lot better playing in not AT&T, Left handed swing and miss power is really not your friend in this park.

Holland just delaying his broadcast career. He’s really likeable and funny.. On the other hand, broadcasters don’t make NEAR the money of a MLB player.

Hopefully Gorkys is the next to get DFA’d. They are going to need a 5th starter eventually.

Gorkys must have nude pictures of somebody important. I’ve seen him since his first of 2 tenures as a Pirate, and he wasn’t any good then either.

Agree. He just never seemed to be anything close to a fifth outfielder. Hit like crap and Bochy was hitting him at lead off!!!

I’ve made an Asian art of it….I call it Tae-Po.
Anyway, Holland will give them innings. He may benefit from the ballpark, but I don’t expect they’ll get very much more than a #5 starter set of numbers.

Holland is likely a better option than Beede at this point, so I am glad we signed him earlier in the year.

Very sad that a a .220/.333/.561 slash line is considered a strong showing.

      That’s nearly a .900 OPS. That’s pretty good.

I was just about to type that exact message that you wrote. Now that just about everyone hits for power, .561 SLG isn’t that impressive, either.

Lol that would have been the 12th best SLG % in majors last year
