The Mets successfully ran outfielder Bryce Brentz through waivers, Matt Ehalt of The Record reports on Twitter. It seems that the out-of-options Brentz will be outrighted off of the New York 40-man roster, though he’ll have the right to decline an assignment to Triple-A.
Brentz has bounced from the Red Sox to the Pirates and then on to the Mets over the offseason. The former first-round pick turned in a strong showing last year at Triple-A, hitting .271/.334/.529 with 31 home runs in 494 plate appearances.
Now, though, Brentz will have to decide whether to stay with his new organization or instead set out onto the open market. The Mets do not appear to have a direct path up to the majors, though obviously the organization likes the player. Given that every other team has now passed on a chance to add Brentz to a 40-man roster, it seems unlikely he’ll earn an Opening Day job in the big leagues, though perhaps there are some more promising opportunities out there.

Go back to the Red Sox.

I’m a little surprised that there wasn’t a team willing to give him a shot. I mean the mariners have a mash unit going on and they went with werth instead

There was…the Pirates and he had the spring to win a job. He failed miserably. Probably a AAAA player.

He had a sore shoulder for part of the camp and they really did not have a spot after they traded for Dickerson. They have Osuna for OF depth as soon as the rotation gets stretched out, they will have Osuna back up, He can play both corner OF and both corner IF spots so a better bench piece. I was bummed that the Pirates lost him. Brentz will be stuck behind a bunch of OF with the Mets now.

I would get that but he’s got a very small sample size to be branded with quad a
There was a time that Nelson Cruz was similar. Corner of that destroyed minor league pitching but wasn’t great with glove.
Give brentz 300 abs plenty of teams could put him at dh/corner of/1b.
Worst is he’s quad a. Not like the cost is in the millions

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

I could definitely see Brentz winding up as a Brandon Moss type if he finally gets his shot somewhere. To me he is not a 1st division regular. But he could prove serviceable in the right situation like Brandon Moss was able to find with Oakland. That seems like a better comparison than the Nelson Cruz one. Just my opinion though.

Go back to the Sox is right.

Why Baltimore doesn t pick this guy up is beyond me or even Detroit, San Fran or Seattle should take a shot.
mikedickinson
He needs to go to Japan.

Agreed. Probably be a team willing to give him decent money over the next year or two, and if he puts up big numbers he could always come back or even stay. Not bad money over there. A 43 year old Koji is making almost 2 million American over there. Much better money then any American independent league.

Here is what i don’t understand, how could mets claim him and then outright him? that is what the pirates wanted to do with him. What is pirates claimed him again and outrighted him? Endless circle.
Mendoza Line 215
It can be an almost endless circle especially if several teams want him but just as the 40th guy and he constantly gets dropped when that team finds someone better.Once he goes back to one of the teams of all of the other teams who had once claimed him and released him,the others usually give up.Kennys Vargas got picked up I think by the Reds from the Twins recently, but went back to the Twins when the Reds released him a few days later. No one else had claimed him so the Twins were able to send him through waivers to AAA.Otherwise it would be like the Boston MTA and he would never return.
Bald Vinny
Mets claimed him and placed him on waivers. Once he cleared waivers, they outright him. He hasn’t accepted the assignment yet.

Unless he lines up a ML deal immediately, he should head to Las Vegas. With all the injuries we have, could there be a better opportunity to get called up from AAA than with the Mets?
