Brewers GM David Stearns spoke today about his team’s much-discussed offseason pitching decisions, as Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes. Explaining that the organization believes it has ample rotation depth on hand, Stearns explained that his focus was on evaluating “the extent of the upgrade” that could be achieved in any particular transactions. Clearly, the team felt it could do more by adding two high-quality outfielders than by putting veteran hurlers in front of a group of youngsters that, in Stearns’s view, “have the ability to make an impact on the major-league level” in the near future. That said, Stearns acknowledges that his front office was involved with several free agents and also “were close a couple of times” to trades for pitching.
Here’s more from the central divisions:
- Mike Napoli is expected to decide shortly whether he’ll return to the Indians on another minor league contract, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reports (Twitter link). The presumption seemingly remains that he’ll return and open the year at Triple-A, as manager Terry Francona tells reporters including MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian (Twitter link). But nothing has been formalized at this point, with Napoli evidently still holding out hope of finding a big league opportunity elsewhere. The veteran first baseman, who was released yesterday from a minors deal with Cleveland, has struggled to generate interest at the MLB level all winter long after a middling 2017 season.
- Meanwhile, the Indians got a bit more clarity in their pitching plans with the decision to place Ryan Merritt on the DL to open the season, as Bastian reports. A combination of knee problems to open camp and a “tired arm” as it draws to a close have conspired to hold him back. The news also prevents the Cleveland organization from making a tough call on Merritt, an out-of-options hurler that the team would prefer not to expose to waivers.
- The Twins are likely to look for a right-handed hitter with some pop, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune writes, as teams make their final Spring Training cuts and veteran players can opt out of minor league contracts. Robbie Grossman, Zack Granite, and Ryan LaMarre are competing for two of Minnesota’s remaining bench spots, though none of that trio has much power. The Minnesota organization was connected previously with Napoli, though after signing Logan Morrison as the primary DH it seems reasonable to anticipate that the club would prefer any new addition be capable of spending time in the outfield.
- In other news out of Minnesota, the Twins have renewed young center fielder Byron Buxton at a $570K rate, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reports on Twitter. The 24-year-old entered the winter as a 2+ service-class player who was under consideration for an extension, but the sides have thus far failed to see eye to eye on both a near-term and long-term arrangement. From the outside, at least, it still seems possible that the Twins could strike a deal with a player who finally showed the output to match the hype in an outstanding second half of the 2017 season. Of course, his less-than-smooth transition to the majors could also create divergent opinions on value.
- Long-time Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer acknowledges that this could be his last campaign in Pittsburgh, as Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic writes (subscription link). He also says he’s content to allow the situation to “play out” as it will. As Biertempfel explains, the 31-year-old does not appear likely to be in the team’s long-term plans with a variety of interesting middle-infield prospects moving up the ranks behind him.

Napoli is a guy who I will always route for regardless. Very good hitter, and even better club house presence.
In regard to the Twins, the fact that Ryan LaMarre is about to win a bench spot is a bit horrifying. I used to love LaMarre back in the day, but man, he has really been awful recently. I could see the twins making a move to sign somebody like Bourjos or Ben Revere (if he does, in fact, opt-out)
zwaves
I’m sure Napoli appreciates the support, but I would think he could afford a GPS to help him with routing.
moazetongue
lol. Good catch.

You stole my thunder. Root, root for the home team.

Pathetic

Twins could always sign jayson werth…
User 4245925809
He’s Chris Young type player now and should have seen the writing on the wall for good when Young was forced to sign that miLB deal just to find a job. Both are well past their primes and 4th OF at best now. He held out too long and will have to play at AAA and wait for emergency AB’s on some team if he wants to continue now.
jbigz12
Chris young got a Mlb deal. Werth probably will not though.
waxbuddie
The day Milwaukee signed Cain and traded for Yelich I believe they were close for pitching, but the trade fell through and here they are now. Toooo many players. Commence brewer fans telling me I’m wrong..
HalosHeavenJJ
It felt like they had a pitching trade in the works to me, too. A sudden glut of outfielders with one of them already ticketed to leave.
brewcrewer
Yeah I don’t think they wanted four starting outfielders. feel like Domingo had his bags packed but didn’t get a flight ticket
brewcrewer
I should add that I think this offseason was the best time to trade domingo too. Don’t think he’ll hit much better than last year, and his defense is so bad
michaelw
Your the only one who’s honest about it. Wish other fans of other teams weren’t in denial. Your 100% right waxbuddy
moazetongue
Good way to hold on to a pitcher you don’t want to lose that doesn’t have any options left. “Tired arm”!
Polish Hammer
I was thinking the same, nothing says weakened trade return like “tired arm” for a pitcher when the season hasn’t even started yet. SMH…
ohiodevil 2
His trade value was already hurt with him being out of options.
soylentwill
I think the Twins are waiting to see a full season of offensive production from Buxton before they lock him up long term…
biasisrelitive
the problem is that the price is going to go up astronomically if you wait until after this season not only will he be more proven but he’ll have some arb money guaranteed. I hope they lock him up now 2 a inciarte or Herrera type deal
ffjsisk
I’m betting on Buxton becoming an MVP candidate this year. His price is about to go through the roof.
GenoSeligPrieb
It would take some creativity, but a 3-way deal, with the Royals sending Danny Duffy to Milwaukee, the Brewers sending Domingo Santana to Minnesota, and the Twins sending prospects to KC, would help all 3 smaller market teams.
bravesandcrewfan
That’s a really good idea actually. I thought Duffy would be the best option but had no idea how we’d get a fair trade for KC without giving up big name prospects. We know what we’re getting with Santana so this is prob the best move for all sides. Except maybe that the twins may value Duffy higher than Santana so they may not want to give KC the prospects they deserve. Maybe Brewers throw in one too?
biasisrelitive
I like the idea if it had been before the twins side Morrison now they don’t have a spot for a starting right handed bat. I’d like them to maybe get Broxton as a right-handed hitting backup outfielder
jbigz12
Twins have 3 starting outfielders and Logan Morrison. Don’t see a fit unless they want to move joe Mauer back to catcher….
sufferforsnakes
Napoli at AAA would take at-bats away from Bobby Bradley. Not a good idea at this stage in his development. I do believe I read somewhere that even Napoli agreed with that.
Maybe, if he doesn’t get a major league contract, the Tribe can bring him into the coaching carousel?
ohiodevil 2
Why would he have to get regular at bats? Napoli knows his role and would maybe play 2 or 3 days a week. And him being on roster with Bradley is just like him being a coach on the field
sufferforsnakes
How’s he gonna play that much when Nellie Rodriguez, who like Bradley had a great spring, is also there?
astros_fan_84
If Napoli wants to play, and the Indians like him, let him play. He doesn’t have to be a regular. The dude has earned the right. Its probably great for their farm to have a beloved vet who’s played in World Series who still loves the game enough to be a minor leaguer.
ohiodevil 2
He can DH as well as play 1b a couple days a week. And Rodriguez hit .171 last year at Columbus with 181 strikeouts….he can afford some days off
sufferforsnakes
That was then….this is now.
ohiodevil 2
Whatever that means….neither Bradley or Rodriguez are ready for the majors…..Bradley could be later this season, but needs time at AAA. Rodriguez looks like a 4-A player. All it takes is one injury to Alonso or Edwin and who do you go to? Having Napoli at Columbus makes complete sense, even if he plays 2 games a week, he is a professional and will be ready if they need him….plus he passes his knowledge on to the young players at AAA….win/win.
sufferforsnakes
Your saying neither are ready just reinforces my point that they need to receive all the at-bats.
Don’t get me wrong, I am a Napoli fan, but his time is past. We need to develop the young players now.
ohiodevil 2
You’re missing the point that both of them can still play even with Napoli ok the roster
ohiodevil 2

sufferforsnakes
Sure, ‘cause every team has 3 first basemen on their rosters. Sheesh, I give up. You’re hopeless.

Do people around the league know Jordy Mercer? Value him?
He’s not a great player by any means, but he’s probably the best player I never hear a word about outside his home city.
I suspect his value is greatest as a clubhouse example/leader for the Pirates.
geejohnny
Jordys unspectacularness is spectacular.
davidcoonce74
Mercer is a lousy hitter and fielder; there is some value in suiting up every day, however. Chase Headley is a similar player. Jed Lowrie is a similar player. None of these guys have a ton of value, but they are major leaguers and that means something.
dcahen
Davidcoonce74 – Jordy Mercer is an above average hitter at .250 for his career, averages 10 homers & 48 RBI’s. Not bad for a #8 hitter. He is also an above average fielder with 10 errors or less at SS yearly. Some value is now over $6 mil/year. Look up your stats before calling someone a lousy hitter & a lousy fielder, oh great scout.
chesteraarthur
Jody Mercer is NOT an above average hitter….He has a career 88wRc+, below average. Maybe you need to look up stats before calling out someone else…
jdgoat
Yep and he has a 92 OPS plus. And errors don’t tell you if a guy is good or not. You could have two errors the whole year and still be a lousy defender
jamesorange12
Mercer is better than Clint Barmes…and pretty much any Pirates SS I’ve seen in my lifetime lol. With that being said, nobody is right in this conversation. Mercer is as average as average can get with an average WAR per season of about 1…he’s neither lousy, nor is he above average. So shut yo mouths. Go Buccos
chesteraarthur
“With that being said, nobody is right in this conversation. Mercer is as average as average can get with an average WAR per season of about 1…”
It’s very ironic that you say no one is right, then proceed to make a comment that is not supported by facts and is thus also, “not right”. A WAR of one is not average. That is below average. Perhaps you should try the whole, “shut yo mouths” thing…
jamesorange12
No need to get so personally offended lol, but yeah, mercer is average. If you want to argue over five tenths….His WAR is actually closer to 1.5 especially taking out an injury riddled 2015, which is just about league average.
Also, not quite sure you understand irony lol. The only irony here went over your head.
Also, my comment (his averageness) was supported by a fact…the fact being his WAR. Perhaps you should try the whole learn context/how to read thing
dcahen
I look up real stats, like avg., RBI’s, HR’s, not some convoluted wRc+. A SS hitting above .250 in the #8 hole is above average.
Mendoza Line 215
I am sorry that I am late on this post but Jordy Mercer is a special player to me as he plays for my team in the position that I played through American Legion ball.I think that he is underrated in that he is a solid average player in an important position who shows up and plays every day without complaint,I realize that he is rated somewhere in the 20’s of the 30 starting shortstops in the game but I think that that speaks to the abilities of those higher rated than him more than to his abilities.Call me conservative but I think that he is the type of player that unless his replacement is clearly better than him,and I am not sure that the Pirates have that player now, that he will be missed when he is no longer there. They would do well to keep him on one year contracts until they clearly have a better option.
