The Brewers have released veteran righty Yovani Gallardo, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (via Twitter). He’ll be owed $500K under the partially guaranteed MLB contract he agreed to over the winter.
This move had been expected, as the club determined over the weekend that Gallardo would not be on the Opening Day roster. That made it all but certain that the reunion would be short-lived between Gallardo and the organization he pitched for from 2007 through 2014.
Still, there had been at least some belief that he might end up being moved in trade. Instead, Gallardo will head back onto the open market in search of a new organization.
Gallardo, 32, was long an effective rotation piece. But he has struggled badly over the past two seasons. Injury certainly played a role, and Gallardo lost about a full tick on his heater in 2016. But even in a 2017 season in which he recovered some of that lost velo and revived his swinging-strike rate to its highest level since 2011, Gallardo limped to a 5.72 ERA in 130 2/3 innings by surrendering a career-high 1.65 homers per nine.
While the recent signs aren’t all that promising, the Brewers obviously felt Gallardo was worth at least a partial commitment. He was not particularly effective this spring, allowing seven earned runs in 13 1/3 innings while recording a 12:8 K/BB ratio, but may yet find a MLB opportunity to open the season. If not, odds are that Gallardo will be an in-demand depth piece.

Not bad 500k for a lackluster ST. You can stick a fork in gallardo.
Caseys.Partner
“You can stick a fork in gallardo.”
You can stick a fork in the 2018 Brewers. Maybe they’ll buy some real pitchers next winter.
davbee
5th in ERA last year, 10th in hitting (re: runs scored). Pitching hasn’t been the problem.
twentyforty
Just wait, that will be the worst staff in the NL by May. It…is…brutal.
stevewpants
Are you unfamiliar with the team in Miami?
chesteraarthur
This isn’t last year….
Their starting rotation is projected to be worse than the Padres…

Jack Taddy
lol man I can’t wait for you projection ball garglers to eat it.
stevewpants
Projections are nice, but the Mets were ranked 2nd in that metric in 2017. Obviously injuries are tough to predict, but I’m just pointing out that the pre season ranks only mean so much. The brewers were ranked 27th by fangraphs last year and did significantly better. Its why they play the games.
wscaddie56
So last year they missed by a full run on Nelson and Suter. Two runs on Anderson.
Hard to blame brewers fans for being skeptical of their projections.

Ry.the.Stunner
There’s also no reason to believe that Chase Anderson, who had never pitched below a 4 ERA in his career, and then suddenly burst out with a sub-3 ERA, is going to repeat. He certainly could, but it’s highly unlikely.
brewerswin
He actually was one of the top pitchers in baseball in the second half the year prior. So he has done it for more than just one season.
aceofrainbows
Giants won’t have Bumgarner back in may.
hamelin4mvp
This might be the end of the line for ole’ Yo.
jbigz12
Someone will sign him to a minor league deal if he’s interested. Edwin Jackson has managed to hang around for a long time, I’m sure gallardo can too. If he wants.
Coal tender
I expect the “el cheapo” Rangers to come and offer him a deal.
Daniel Youngblood
As a Rangers fan, I actually wouldn’t mind that. It’s not like he’d be blocking any near-ready starting prospects (Yohander Mendez being the one possible exception), and he’s a hometown guy who had success in his one season in Texas. As a depth piece, he’s worth a flier IMO. What’s the worst that could happen? He either stinks the in minors and never makes it up or does get called up and fits right in with what is almost certain to be a substandard rotation.

The Seattle Mariners, who declined his $13 million team option in November, could sign Yovani Gallardo to complement their “wolf pack” approach of limiting each pitcher to one to two times through an opponent’s lineup.
Gallardo stunk it up as a Seattle starter last year but posted a 1.69 ERA over 16 innings in six relief appearances, including four of at least three innings.
suddendepth
That’s exactly how I would be looking at him. He’s got the tools to be a league average reliever (in the context of a whole season) if he decides he wants to be.
jbigz12
I don’t know if he has the tools to be a league average reliever. He has below average velocity now and shaky control. Don’t read too much into the ERA with Seattle out of the pen, I’m sure a lot of that came in low leverage or mop up innings.
KCelts
I still remember when I feared him the most in the Central Division whenever the Cards would face off against him. He had a chance to be dominant.
high_upside
Yeah it seems like there are so many pitchers nowadays that go from being feared and commanding contracts to being washed up and released in ST while still at a prime age. Maybe it’s always been that way but I feel like when I was a kid, pitchers reliably performed the same throughout their career whether they were ace guys or bubble guys.
gorav114
I think it shows how difficult it is. Used to be several weak spots in every lineup whereas now very few “automatic” outs. Remember positions like middle infield where defense was only thing important, now u get guys like Dozier, Correa, Machado, Schoop, Altuve playing middle infield.
infinitybinge
OMG, I know, right? Let’s do each other’s makeup and try not to sob, while we talk about how Doc Holliday died in a plane crash.
brewers214
I think the brewers should offer a miner league contract with an out so he can try to work stuff out and also give his agent the right to look for a big league contract with another team
kripes-brewers
He always was a nibbler. Blood pressure always rose watching him, as he’d get a lot of strikeouts, but it’d take him 8-10 pitches for every batter and he’d only last 5 or 6 innings. Wish him well.
Coaches have to find a way early on to teach these guys to pitch instead of rely on the heater. Their arms can’t take the stress and TJ surgery gets them before they get really established. Change speeds, move the ball around in the zone, and throw strikes – it doesn’t have to be 95-100 mph.

SF might come a lookin.
Solaris601
Giants are in a position where they really need to give every available SP serious consideration. They need bodies to get them through the first half at least.
reevewashere
Don’t worry Detroit will pick him up they need any arms they can get.
Bryzzo2016
Crazy, he must really be bad if he can’t find a spot on that pitching staff.
stevewpants
I admit that I’m not always up to date on the minor league staffs of other teams, but as an attentive Brewer fan I can tell you some of their young arms will end up making an impact, they didn’t need as much pitching help as everyone kept saying.
chesteraarthur
haha, yeah ok. We’ll see if you’re singing the same tune in june
stevewpants
We will
Jack nuts
so last year must have been a fluke? so the only way a team is good is spending 200 over 6 years on an aging pitcher? youth have more to prove than any aging player as they want the paycheck.
I also think everyone forget the brewers have the smallest market in baseball. that’s not an excuse for not spending money but I think there is a contending team put together right now. last season hitting won games midway and when the hitting slugged pitching eventually took over. I’m glad the brewers didn’t pick up any of them this winter. the brewers are still ahead of their prediction of 2019.
davbee
You can’t even carry a tune.
stubby66
That’s ok when this pitching staff succeed these will be the same yahoos that jump on your bandwagon.
jbigz12
You did lose your best pitcher for at least a couple of months. You didn’t make any meaningful additions to the rotation aside from chacin. You currently have 4 starting Ofers for 3 spots…. it’s a fair knock. We’ll obviously see how it all plays out but the rotation is a little thin right now.
hurricanewar23
Rangers will sign him. If rangers can bring in colon for depth, you bet rangers will bring him in
Daniel Youngblood
I hope they do. With the patchwork staff they built this winter, they’re going to need at least nine or 10 starters to get through the season. And with Herrera on the 60-day DL, there are precious few internal options with upside. Might as well bring Gallardo in and see if he can recreate the success he had with the Rangers in 2015.
bobbyvwannabe
Giants or Rangers. The consensus is in.
CowboysoldierFTW
I do think the Brewers over achieved last year. But I do not believe they do will have a horrible staff this year either. I see middle of the pack.
BrewCrew1420
Too bad we couldn’t trade him for a lottery ticket to recoup some of that $500k we wasted on him. I guess he was good insurance in case we didn’t sign Albers or Logan or didn’t find Miley,
SFgiantsUK
Go to SF – where Veteran Dreams come true, get a big pay day and then be on the DL for 2 years
Solaris601
Taken directly from the brochure SF sends out to all FA pitchers every winter.
