Despite a lackluster Spring Training performance, Domingo Santana doesn’t believe he was distracted by the trade speculation that followed him all winter, the outfielder tells Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Though he said he didn’t worry about the rumors because they were out of his control, Santana admitted that “it would have been hard to get traded. I’m really attached to this group of people here. Even the staff, they have been really good to me since Day 1.” Since Santana didn’t get dealt, he now faces some type of reduction in playing time with Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain moving into everyday outfield roles and Ryan Braun also in the mix for left field or a first base timeshare with Eric Thames. It remains to be seen how the Brew Crew will juggle all of these players, though it also isn’t out of the question that a trade could still solve this logjam.
Some more from the Brewers’ camp…
- In an appearance on the “Power Alley” show on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (audio link), Brewers owner Mark Attanasio said that the team exhibited “a little bit of discipline in some of our signings” during the winter in order to save some resources for potential trade deadline pickups. “Some of the decisions we made in the offseason here were more keeping our powder dry for midseason acquisitions,” Attanasio said. The team will already go into 2018 with an estimated payroll of almost $93.5MM, as opposed to just over $70MM at the end of last season, with the Cain and Yelich salaries representing the biggest new outlays.
- It could be that the Brewers explore adding a pitcher at midseason, though in another piece from Haudricourt, Brewers GM David Stearns discussed how the Brew Crew simply weren’t comfortable spending at the levels necessary to land a major free agent arm like Yu Darvish, Jake Arrieta, or Alex Cobb. Stearns feels his team already has some good pitching on hand, which he realizes runs counter to criticism from pundits and fans that the Brewers still need rotation help. “We’re flying against what the common perception is of our team. We understand that. We’ve also done that a lot since I’ve been here,” Stearns said. “Look, we’re wrong plenty. But we’re as wrong on the conventional moves as we are on the unconventional moves. We have to do what we think is right and not necessarily do what convention says….We might not necessarily agree with conventional wisdom on some players. If someone is willing to pay more than you, then you’re not going to get the player. When we’re willing to be the high bidder, as we were with Lorenzo Cain, you get the player.”
brewcrew08
Mid-season acquisitions won’t matter when you’re already out of it. Have to love that logic…keep your head above water in hopes of being in a race come the deadline. Why not just make the move now?
neonkeon23
They still have pretty much everybody under contract for the next few years. I’m with the FO here, Brewers do not need to win this year.
brewcrew08
That just proves my point though. If we are at 93M payroll wise and no one comes off the books next year plus young guys will make more where is the money coming from? Mark going to raise the payroll up to 120M to add a starter?
MilTown8888
I think Mark is willing to stretch payroll to $120mil, but not by giving a multiyear free agent deal to one player at 30mil aav
davbee
Adding an over-priced Jeff Suppan quality pitcher was not going to help the Brewers.
brucewayne
All the FA starters that were in the top tier or so are much better than the Suppan example that you keep throwing out there!
afsooner02
Because injuries happen once we start playing games and what you can extract for players then will exceed what you can get now.
Keystonelight
If we got someone like Marcus Stroman at the deadline would be a better pickup than any of the free agents at the dollar amount that they wanted.
BlueJayFan1515
Stroman would take an absolute haul.
jrwhite21
Brew Crew probably has the system to pull it off though
jbigz12
If they want to empty it. It took a lot of young talent to get yelich.
brucewayne
That’s what all fans think of their players ! It won’t be near as much as you think.
bastros88
I wouldn’t pay for Cobb, Darvish, or Arrieta as well. They are better off acquiring players at the trade deadline.
brewcrew08
Assuming they are still in a race by then…. a staff of Anderson, Davies, Chacin, Suter and Woodruff isn’t competitive.
twentyforty
Worst staff n the NL.
BrewCrew82
Now how can you conclude this? This staff is only minus Jimmy Nelson but pretty much the same staff that was upper half in the league last year. If you honestly don’t think those guys can scratch quality starts together with the influx in offense then you don’t know much about baseball.
billythekid
They are/will be competitive….and clearly you’re forgetting the return of Jimmy Nelson.
davbee
A staff of Anderson, Davies, Nelson, Peralta, Garza, Suter and Guerra was 5th in the NL last year.
brucewayne
Last year is OVER
brucewayne
and has no relation to this year at all! NONE!
MilTown8888
With this offense they probably need like 4.5era from starters to be in the race at midseason where they can restock with Jimmy Nelson’s return and hopefully a trade deadline pickup.
The difference between getting an ace now vs at the deadline is probably like 2-3 war. It matters a lot but not enough to jeoporadize the entire 4-5 year window by commiting 20% of the payroll to one arm on a mutiyear free agent deal.
thebfr21
The Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff was one of the best pitching staffs in the league last year. Granted that is with Jimmy Nelson, so this year getting Jimmy Nelson back will almost be like a trade (praying he can come back at full strength) but tred water till he gets back and find out who is available is our best bet! If Wade Miley can get healthy and perform well this year is a big bonus and cheap.
Ry.the.Stunner
Chase Anderson pitched over his head. Nelson is out for half the year. Miley hasn’t pitched to an ERA below 4 since 2013. And Woodruff and Suter are not better than the combo of Garza and Guerra (as terrible as Garza is). You can say “it was one of the best pitching staffs in the league last year” (it was actually 10th in the MLB and 5th in the NL, so it wasn’t even really one of the best unless your definition of “one of the best” is the very bottom of the top third.). and it’s not even close to the same pitching staff as last year.
BrewBucksVikes
Super actually pitched very well as a starter last season
BrewBucksVikes
*Suter
billythekid
And why is he leaving Davies out? Kid’s a stud. And pretty sure Garza and Guerra aren’t on the roster because they are far worse than this season’s options. Top third in pitching will work with the new offensive additions.
On a side note: does that really say “vikes” after Brew and Bucks? What the ………?
Killin me.
MilTown8888
Guerra looked better in ST than he did last year. I dont mind having him in AAA as a depth option
brewcrew08
Brewers fans looking with their rose colored glasses on…I was high on the brewers this year if they added a starter, which they didn’t. Anderson will not pitch to below a 3 again, Nelson won’t come back 100% (that’s a pipe dream) and expecting production out of Miley? I’ll leave that one be..
AlBundysFanClubPresident
And cubs fans going out of their way to proclaim doom for the Brewers.
I swear I’ve read: ‘Anderson pitched way over his head last year’ and ‘ Anderson is due for a major regression in 2018’ a thousand times this off-season..from supposed knowledgeable fans.
Nevermimd that he altered his mechanics, added another pitch, and put on weight to not only get more velo from his fastball, but to pitch deeper into games.
Meanwhile, Jon Lester is clearly on the downhill side of his career, but ‘his veteran savvy and postseason experience are all he needs…’
BrewCrew82
10th out of 30 isn’t good……..sure…. anyways the problem last year was offense, not pitching and that is what was acquired in the offseason. And if you honestly think Suter + Woodruff isn’t better than Garza + Guerra you need to wake up. Guerra has 1 boom year and fell off back to what was a pretty mediocre career and garza is absolute garbage. Suter and Woodruff are miles better than those two.
twentyforty
You’re dreaming in Nelson comes back at anything close to what he was last year. Not only in 2018 but ever. Do your research on just how brutal labral surgery is for a throwing athlete then understand it’s worse for fully developed throwing athletes like Nelson. There is no magic surgical fix for it…unless you’re Drew Bree’s.
Appbrewers
it was a non throwing injury of it so very different than normal pitching injuries of the labrum.
brucewayne
You can’t use last year at all! It’s over
brucewayne
and means nothing now!
Jack Taddy
That’s right! The Astros will never win a World Series! The Twins should trade Buxton! What a bust!
dust44
Since when is having 5 good bats for 4 spots the end of the world and need to force a trade. Please remember these dudes play almost everyday in the summer. They need a day off. There’s plenty of at bats to go around. A lot of “4th” outfielders get 300ish at bats
MilTown8888
Yeah but they wont rest any of those guys more than 5% of the games. Maybe 10% for Braun. You’re still talking a 120 game logjam not counting games where Braun is at 1st. Better to have good players than not, but it’s still wasted assets
jgoody62
The double switch is a poweful thing… Santana could theoretically bat for the pitcher on his second plate appearance, then take over in the field for Cain, Yelich, Braun, or Thames depending on who was last to take an at bat in the previous inning. This gives the team the ability to use a reliever for 2+ innings without worrying about the reliever’s at bat!
brewcrew08
There you go let’s sink the pen but having them throw 4-5 innings a night
jgoody62
I’m no brewers fan, but I know a subpar rotation when I see one. I wouldn’t be shocked if 3 of your 5 starters didn’t make it to the 6th inning consistantly anyways. As much as I don’t like it, it seems to be the direction baseball is going, especially reflecting in the 8 man bullpen we’re seeing quite a bit of
MilTown8888
So they should have signed one of the big 4 free agents? Arrieta averaged 5.6 innings, Lynn was 5.63ip/gs, Darvish had 6 and Cobb was 6.17.
Besides, average ip/gs is more a measure of managerial temperment and bullpen depth than anything else
MilTown8888
I like it more for platoon switches mid game. Considering that Thames is interchangeable with Braun you can go with a lefty or righty heavy lineup depending on opposing sp then rebalance as needed in the 6th or 7th inning
brewcrewbernie
Braun can’t stay healthy and when he is needs off at minimum one day a week. Usually doesn’t play day games after night games either. There will be plenty of at bats to go around.
stubby66
I completely agree and while some of you don’t think we have the minor league pitchers I disagree. Corbin, Kirby, Derby, Williams, Houser, Griep, Lopez, Ortiz and Perrin are going to come along and help this team either on the field or in a trade. I can guarantee there is about 20 teams that would love to have our minor league pitchers going into this season, by the time the season is over we will have had about 50 guys help this team win. Some of you get too greedy I would rather end up with Kansas City success then Pittsburgh success or a Mariners GM where the cupboards are bare and no money
darenh
I’m happy with the simple, straight logic Stearns offered: they got out-bid for pitching and won the bidding on Yelich and Cain.
That’s not hard to understand, guys.
Not to mention Suppan, Lohse, Garza, Wolf….long term deals to non-aces haven’t worked. And I respect Stearns for avoiding paying premiums on risky SP in their 30s.
Crewfan620
Couldn’t have said this better myself. Sure those guys would be an upgrade this year, but what about in the 3rd year of their deal? Not to mention you don’t need to have a staff of aces to remain competitive for half a season if your team is capable of scoring 5-7 runs every game. So yes hopefully Nelson is a boost and maybe you go pick up another starter via trade. Believe me, if they are out of it by July, a Jake Arrietta type wouldn’t have made a night and day difference
billythekid
Agreed. Not Arrietta, nor Cobb, nor Darvish would make that much difference. All on their decline. Archer would have been the guy to go for had he not be SO pricey…
MilTown8888
Brewers playoff rotation looks weak though. An ace would make a big difference in the playoffs.
Who starts a wild card game, are we going to go with Anderson vs Greinke or Bumgardener? Yeah Nelson is coming back but that’s a lot to expect from someone who is returning from a 10 month injury. He might get back to his old self next year but may still fall back a little this year just due to fatigue issues.
Appbrewers
I’m ok going against greinke. went to a game last year and Brewers absolutely smoked him. think it was the almost no hitter for Anderson
MilTown8888
Regular season vs playoffs. More likely you’ll catch an ace off their game during regular season than during single game elimination playoffs.
Appbrewers
based on what? forget about darvish last year?
brucewayne
But you can’t use that logic on free agents or teams would never sign another FA in the future !
stubby66
Man your a really negative kinda person, I think you must really wear yourself out emotionally
zwmartin
The worst thing to happen to the brewers in the long run was to be good. They missed out on top 5 picks, and now traded away their best prospect to compete for a wild card slot, which, hey can lead to something if everything breaks right. Sort of a weird spot.
BrewCrew82
Their best prospect is Hiura and its not close. Brinson was fine but struggled mightily in the majors. Hiura is where you should put your stock into.
AlBundysFanClubPresident
This season, much like last, isn’t “the year” to go for it all. Why is it so difficult to comprehend that Yellich and Cain are signed for 5 years? That’s the window, not 2018.
If they’re right there come July, and the right deal is there, Stearns will make it.
MilTown8888
Thats absurd. The guy we traded plays the same position as the guy we got, and there’s still a logjam of OF’s in the minor leagues.
Appbrewers
funny how so many are already claiming Brewers will suck is a fact. sure projections can be right but they are often far from it. injuries can happen to Cubs too. they just happened to stay relatively healthy all of last year. pure luck that it happened that way. had Nelson not gotten injured I bet they would have made the playoffs. if Anderson wasn’t out for six weeks Brewers winning the division could have easily happened.
kgreene3
Here we go with all the bipolar Brewers fans again. The same people complaining about them not signing an arm in the off season would have been the same people complain about it being a dumb signing a year or two down the road. As for the Yelich trade, you got a proven ball player at the Major League level. What has Brinson done when given the chance? Harrison had 1 decent year in the minors, Diaz was organizational depth and Yamamoto was just another guy. With the control the Brewers have on all these players my guess is Stearns has other pitchers in mind and doesn’t want to blow his chance by signing some 31+ year old to a bloated contract.
Appbrewers
getting yelich also didn’t cost them any of their top pitching prospects. and they have a few really good ones.
kgreene3
That’s exactly the point, they have some decent arms in the farm so there is no reason to get anxious and pull the trigger on a high price overrated arm. This team is primed for the next 5+ years. Hiura, Erceg, Phillips, Burnes, Ortiz, and Dubon. I’m going to laugh when the Packers no longer have a HOF QB, you have a whole generation of kids who have done nothing but watch them win. They will go back to the Packers of the 80’s and believe me, that was painful. I’ve been watching the Brewers since the early 80’s, guess what, they cant afford to put amazing teams on the field year and year when they need to keep the payroll under 100M. This is the life of a small market team.
ballnglove
I’m not going to laugh when Rogers hangs it up, I’m going to cry! I’ve also been a packer/brewer fan since the early 80’s and never want to go back to the days of Randy Wright and Blair Keil!!!
As for the crew, they do have a bright future. It looks like they have the minor league system to remain competitive for many years to come. Everyone can see that they are a little light on starting pitching right now, but I like what I’ve seen so far in Woodruff. Can’t wait to see how he develops this year. Despite what the “experts” might say, it’s going to be a fun season for us Brewer fans!
twentyforty
Decent doesn’t win. Exceptional wins. Milwaukee doesn’t have exceptional in their farm.
Appbrewers
decent almost won the division last year with two top pitchers missing significant amount of time. weird how people forget the bad pitching that the Brewers no longer have. no Garza, Peralta, and Feliz. those guys alone cost quite a few wins. not saying Brewers would win all those without them but their chances are much higher.
brucewayne
But you also don’t have their wins either. You have to take the bad with the good ! Not cherry pick!
MilTown8888
Brewers pitching prospects will always fly under the radar as long as the AAA club is in Colorado Springs. See Josh Hader’s AA, AAA, and mlb stats for reference
MilTown8888
>Here we go with all the bipolar Brewers fans again
That doesnt seem like an insult to me. Getting pumped about your team’s strengths and being realistic about your team’s weaknesses are both positive traits
jakec77
While I understand not being able to reel in a Darvish or Arrieta, they should have been able to land a Lynn or a Cobb. Or, they should have been able to trade for an Odorizzi or someone else like that- not an ace (that they will desperately need to acquire in season they get to a WC game, while one could argue that the Brewers are better overall than a team like the Mets, my money would be on Syndergaard or Degrom in a one game playoff) but a least a legitimate #3 borderline #2.
Or, go the other way and load up the bullpen (although from a cost effective standpoint, that wasn’t the move to make this offseason)
Appbrewers
I wouldn’t bet on it. Brewers beat degrom last year and the offense is significantly better this year. Brewers will be able to score runs. all it takes is one more run than the other. Brewers have a pretty good bullpen too
stubby66
I’m drinking what they put in the water in Wisconsin (beer!! ) lol. But in all seriousness Wisconsinites will 10 out of 10 times we will take our ’82 World Series beer drinking locker room fighting losers over a bought Marlins kinda World Series win. Yeah we want to win but we will always take a earned 2nd place over a fake championship everytime ( PLAY HARD WORK HARD AND SOMETIMES LOSE BUT WE OWN IT)
ray_derek
Signing Cain was a mistake. He also overplayed his hand thinking he could get quality pitching in a trade for one of his OFs. Not that he had to sign Cobb, Arrietta or Darvish (I don’t believe that would have been smart), but how much better would you feel if 2 years of Lance Lynn was on the team right now? I’d think a hell of a lot better than what they’re throwing out there right now.
davbee
The Brewers were 5th in pitching and 10th in runs scored last year. They had a one dimensional offense which bogged down when they weren’t hitting home runs.. They smartly put their money where their biggest need was.
DannyQ3913
Santana was once an 18 year old “throw in” the Phils traded to the Astros……
