Infielder Scooter Gennett has won his arbitration case over the Reds, Jon Heyman of FanRag tweets. The ISE Baseball client will earn $5.7MM in 2018, as opposed to the $5.1MM the Reds proposed. Gennett’s arbitration case was the last of the offseason across Major League Baseball. The players came out on top in 12 of 22 decisions.
The victory for Gennett comes in the wake of a career year, his first with the Reds. Cincinnati claimed Gennett off waivers from the NL Central Brewers in late March, and the move paid off handsomely for the Reds. Playing his age-27 season, the lefty-hitting Gennett, a Cincinnati native, slashed a terrific .295/.342/.531 with 27 home runs and a .236 ISO across 497 plate appearances. Four of those homers (and 10 of his 97 runs batted in) came on a historic June 6 for Gennett, who enjoyed the game of his life in a 13-1 romp over the Cardinals.
Thanks in part to that performance against St. Louis, Gennett will make substantially more this year than the $2.525MM he earned last season. Gennett’s controllable through 2019, so he could be a Red for at least two more seasons, though it’s conceivable he’ll emerge as a trade chip for the rebuilding club. For the time being, Gennett’s likely to continue occupying second on a regular basis for the Reds, who have younger options behind him in Dilson Herrera and touted prospect Nick Senzel.

Wait. When did Scoot become a switch-hitter? Although that could explain why he won his arb hearing.

hm?

He is not a switch hitter. Stop being difficult.

2,134 plate appearances seems high for an age 27 season

I thought so too. That is his career total.

Divided over 5 seasons is just 426 ABs per season

4 HR’s. 10 RBI’s. Definitely deserved a raise.

I know the fan base loves David Stearns in Milwaukee, but there are a number of moves he makes that should give us some concern. Letting Scooter go for NOTHING is one, giving up a gold glove Catcher to the Angels is a second, but the worst was trading Davis to the A’s for a minimal return. I think the Reds got another steal from Stearns this offseason when he non-tendered Hughes. Most fans forget that most of the big trades for the rebuild occurred under Melvin. There have been some good moves by Stearns, such as Travis Shaw, but a lot that is concerning as well
Best of luck to Scooter. I loved him in MKE and his productivity does not surprise me at all.

As good a season as Gennett had last year he still can’t hit lefthanders (.691 OPS) and is still a below average fielder.
Captainwhatshisname
Do you think Stearns didn’t try to trade Gennett? Couldn’t get a taker. It’s great that you are not surprised by his productivity. You must be smarter than every GM out there that didn’t give the Brewers a bag of balls for him last year.

first off, if you think David Stearns is a bad GM, you are not a smart baseball fan.
the gennett was getting rid of a below average defensive second base only player that hadn’t been over 1 WAR for 2 years that was hitting arbitration. we had villar coming of his breakout season ready to man 2nd and he plays multiple positions . at the time, that is an easy decision. It didn’t work out the best year one, but it would be early to decide this as such a big loss.
Maldanado is a career .218 hitter. he is not going to be a great contributor to a winning team. he is an acceptable defensive catcher, which he was when he was with Milwaukee. they got a younger catcher that is a better hitting prospect. most people thought of this as a big win in the brewers favor. Im not one that looks much into gold gloves as they are very subjective. plus we had good catchers last year anyway.
Davis is a 1-tool player. he hits for power, that’s all. he is terrible defensively and didn’t hit for great average. those players are a dime a dozen in today’s MLB. he was getting more expensive as he was hitting arbitration. plus we already have an overabundance of OFs. imagine adding another LF only player to it. they got a top 100 prospect at the time whi one of the top catcher prospects plus a pitching prospect. that’s a great return for a one dimensional player if you ask anyone. Santana is a much better player and they can’t get that return for him now.
those deals all made great sense at the time. not all trades work out. not all prospects will pan out, but those were great trades at the time.

You said everything I was going to say!

Those moves made sense at the time considering their production in Milwaukee.

I did not say Stearns was a bad GM. Everyone always wants to make everything black or white. I am saying there are reasons to be concerned with some of his moves.
I love when people say all these deals “made sense at the time.” Heck, every deal makes sense at the time to someone. Being a great GM means making deals that you can look back on and they still make sense.
Stearns waived Gennett and kept Nick Franklin. It looked like a bad decision and turned out to be a terrible decision. Yes, he has made some good moves but he has also made some bad ones (include Corey Ray in that). Doesn’t mean that he is a bad GM, but it does mean that MKE fans might want to reconsider the blind faith.
Davis is a one tool player, but his one tool plays well at the MLB level and the guys we got likely never see the majors, Maldonado is not a good hitter, but he is a game changing defender. Our return was Jett Bandy. Come on, all I am saying is fans need to think a little more critically about his moves. Evaluate the mistakes along with the wins

As the first player to ever top 800 plate appearances in a single season (let alone 2,000), no wonder he won the hearing!
Colorado Red
He had 497 PA’s last year, no where need 800.
He started on the bench, but won the 2nd basemen’s job

I took over a fantasy baseball team with this guy on it. Honestly I don’t know much about him. Is he any good? Should I keep him?
VampWeekAtBern
Sit him against lefties, and don’t expect 27 home runs again. Maybe 15-20 this year.

My jimmertee impression:
When the Braves waived Scootcher, I predicted this would happen. I know a guy in the clubhouse. I have a crystal ball. Aliens send me messages. Tinfoil can’t hold me down!

Bennett was on a downward spiral in Milwaukee… Sure was fun to see him turn it around just in time to save his career.
