Jake Peavy is planning to return to baseball, and is aiming to throw in a scouting showcase around May 1, Bleacher Report’s Scott Miller writes. The timing of the showcase is due to his son Jacob’s school schedule, an example of how Peavy’s family life took priority over his career last year in the wake of a tumultuous 2016. Peavy dealt with the dual stresses of a divorce and losing $15MM-$20MM of his money to a financial advisor who faced a lawsuit from the the Securities and Exchange Commission for misappropriating funds from Peavy and other clients. Peavy stepped away from the game in 2017 to deal with both matters and spend time with his four children, and he is now ready to attempt a comeback to wrap up his career on a happier note.
Here’s more from around baseball….
- Now that the Orioles have avoided arbitration with Kevin Gausman, the team has settled all its offseason arbitration business, allowing Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun to calculate how much the O’s may have left to spend this offseason. With roughly $121.2MM now on the books for 2018, the Orioles have over $43MM in available payroll space assuming they’re willing to spend as much as they did last season. That, of course, is no given, since the team hasn’t gotten much in return from recent big expenditures, and have now gained some financial relief now that some big contracts (i.e. Ubaldo Jimenez, J.J. Hardy, Chris Tillman, Wade Miley) have expired. Still, the O’s have some major needs that need to be addressed, most notably in the starting rotation.
- Newly-acquired Mariners first baseman Ryon Healy has been bothered by an offseason hand injury and received further tests today, manager Scott Servais told the Seattle Times’ Ryan Divish and other media. The seriousness of the injury isn’t yet known, though rather the problem’s rather uncertain nature is certainly a concern to an M’s team that was positioning Healy as its first baseman of the future. Dan Vogelbach and Mike Ford are internal options at the position, plus several free agent options are available if Healy was sidelined for a significant amount of time.
- The Red Sox are continuing to monitor the market for outfielders, as Dave Dombrowski told reporters (including MLB.com’s Ian Browne and NBCSports.com’s Evan Drellich), and they haven’t given any type of deadline to J.D. Martinez or other free agents for signing with the team. Dombrowski admitted that the team intended to have more lineup options in place by this point (“From a positional player perspective, no, that wasn’t, per se, our plan“) but noted that even a normal offseason is hard to predict, and this winter’s free agent freeze has made things particularly unusual. The lack of free agent activity has led to more trade talks, Dombrowski said, as teams are trying to prepare themselves if and when any of these free agents eventually come off the board.

Cheap ass DD gonna get plowed over this offseason if Sawx finish 3rd lol
mcase7187
How is he cheap he’s given up all of are good prospects and 30m a yr to Price there just is anyone out there that’s worth the kinda money they are looking for
Pablo
Typical DD, free spender, not a free trader like dipoto or anything. I think sox are smart not spending on JD. I think like many teams they have sights set on Manny.
I’m all for boycotting all Boras clients. If my team straight up said we’ll boycott this guys free agents… I’d buy season tickets. Maybe not, but I might grab Series tix in TX where I live.
pasha2k
The Sox will never get Manny! But the Yankees will.
nyy42
Yankees Will Not Need/Want Macho
bosox2004
Manny to the BoSox and Bryce to the Cubbies. There worse thing that camber it off this free agent freeze. Price will never opt out now. We’re stuck with that contract for another 5
PeterDipersio
Yankees can not get manny for the simple reason it will put them way above the luxury tax threshold. They would have to dump significant salary to make that move
herecomethephillies2018
Yanks going over the luxury tax threshold will not be an issue next off season. The only reason they want to stay under this year is so they can go over it next year.
Bocephus
The Yankees can most definitely get Machado for 2019!! Question is will they need or actually want to pursue him. The luxury tax threshold won’t be a problem with a couple salaries coming off.
Bocephus
Wouldn’t be going over.
thegreatcerealfamine
What makes you think that?
mikeyank55
They already offered more than he was worth.
Let’s see how desperate Trader Dave becomes once scott Boras ropes another team into the bidding.
FYI-Pablo-the contract that trader Dave gave PRICE will go down as one of the 5 worst in mlb history.
qbass187
I hope the Yankees DO get Machado. He’s a perfect Yankee. An arrogant punk who believes his own hype. I hope they give him $30 mil a year over 10yrs like Arod and have to suffer through a decade of that tool!
thegreatcerealfamine
Yea the Yanks are laughing at the Sox signing the overpaid, disrespectful, race baiting, wilt under the spotlight, milk toast ace known as David Price
rocky7
qbass…..your comment doesn’t even deserve a reply.
Another jealous fan of success!
Bocephus
Better a contract like Ellsbury’s to help at the big league level then to be paying guys to play in the minors or on another MLB team..Rusney and Pablo. Oh and the highest payed reliever in history David Price.
deweybelongsinthehall
Exactly. Boston stayed under the cap last year so they could exceed it if and when it was appropriate.
deweybelongsinthehall
No suspect to Rocky7 below but it does deserve a comment: STFU
deweybelongsinthehall
Meant for TGCF. One year to a championship round and the Yankee arrogance resurfaces. Sad.
thegreatcerealfamine
dewey aim your frustration toward qbass since that’s where this came from. But since you either overlooked or chose not to acknowledge the source for Rocky’s or my post..oh well. Try not to be the typical Red Sox fan who play’s that tired it’s not me it’s you song…
deweybelongsinthehall
Part of the problem is as we respond, so do others and they don’t always line up. Living in NY I have always said I will not become arrogant like the typical Yankee fan who enjoyed great success in the 90s but retorts “27 championshipa” when they weren’t born for most of them. Both teams enjoyed success since the Steroid era and both have solid teams now.
nasrd
Price’s contract is terrible. How can any fan (or baseball executive) for that matter not see that
bastros88
“what have you done lately” mentality”
zwaves
Miggy, Verlander, Prince Fielder, Victor Martinez and David Price are dying laughing at your “cheap” comment.
kiwimlbfan
I’m sure the Yankees would give them back Ellsbury if they asked nicely…
PeterDipersio
As a Boston fan, I’m laughing at the Yankees and their huge deal with Ellsbury
ctguy
It’s almost as funny as the Sox deals for Sandoval & Carl Crawford
mehs
Don’t forget Rusney Castillo.
mikeyank55
Elsbury is Half the cost than those other guys
bosox90
All I hear are two conflicting opinions about DD and the Sox, one being that the big contracts are a massive mistake and others complaining louder that the Red Sox haven’t spent enough money.
The Red Sox are actively pursuing free agents. They haven’t missed out on anybody yet, as basically anyone they could want is still sitting on the market. Let’s not judge anyone’s offseason until the offseason is over and the dust has settled. Also, it’s quite possible the Red Sox head into 2018 with the highest payroll in the league.
nutbunnies
Behind who? Rays, Jays, and Orioles not exactly looking like worldbeaters.
emt tim
lolll so Oakland wins that trade
#Fantasygeekland
Lol? He’s injured…
DVail1979
And Oakland wins the trade? Did I miss the part that said the injury was season or career ending? How exactly does Oakland win?
outinleftfield
That was a fantastic article by Scott Miller. A must read.
Ski to Coors
You forgot to mention Peavy was also busy doing concerts with The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh.
User 4245925809
Anybody does a concert with the dead is fine in my book.. Going to one of their concerts in the old days was one experience will never forget.

Interesting how the O’s actually have a nice chunk of change to play with. They’ve also been smart this offseason by not spending gobs of money to fill their rotation. As things stand, I think they wait for the price of Lynn and Cobb to come down. If the prices do not drop then the Orioles remain committed to trying to shore up the rotation from within — primarily rule five guys at this point. As horrific as that might sound, it does demonstrate a kind of restraint until some of their other arms (most notably Harvey) develop to complement what could become a very strong front end of the rotation in Bundy and Gausman. If the season becomes a train wreck and they want to more aggressively add younger parts, they can deal from an imperfect but attractive crop: Britton, Jones, Machado, Schoop.
jbigz12
The prices are pretty low for the lower mid tier guys. Jaime Garcia or Andrew cashner aren’t going to get a lot of money. You can be patient but at some point you needs to get a major league into camp. There’s too many open slots in our rotation to not have another arm added very soon. I’ve accepted the fact that we won’t sign any more than 2 pitchers this offseason but let’s at least hope we can get there.
pasha2k
DD has done zero n gves the fans a bunch of baloney
22222pete
Come on, Sales, Kimbrell, Price, Moreland, and bringing up Devers and Benintendi faster than any GM would.
Wasn’t his fault Ben stuck him with Pablo, Hanley, Pedroia (team team friendly lol), Castillo and Craig or that Ortiz retired after one of his best seasons ever
bosox90
His best move of the offseason will have been overhauling the coaching staff. Their offensive approach was to grind out at bats to get the starter out of the game, which played perfectly into the hands of the many teams with filthy bullpens in the AL. John Farrell was simply not a good manager in my opinion, they won in spite of him.
Their roster is mostly full. He has six starting pitchers that for different reasons aren’t really tradable. They could use a bullpen arm, but obviously don’t need to pay for a top end closer when they have Kimbrel. He has three catchers. He has one of the best defensive outfields in the game, a trio that also boasts a ton of offensive potential. He has his 3B of the future and his SS of the present. They have depth behind Pedroia at 2b and are actively talking to Nunez.
DD didn’t need to wheel and deal this offseason. JDM will be a luxury addition that will make them the highest payroll in the league. He won’t have a natural starting position in the field, but will be a regular in the middle of the lineup if signed. The same people that argue for DD doing nothing will be the same people complaining in year 3 or 4 of JD’s contract. DD has practiced patience this offseason and it could really pay off. Let’s see how this shakes out.
22222pete
Healey going down Might be good news for Hosmer. When making trades you would think they do a full medical like with FA.
As I mentioned earlier NL teams have outspent AL teams 3 to 1. Makes no sense since AL teams have an added position that requires filling by an offense first player coming off the worst DH performance season ever. The DH also makes SPing more important
The Oregonian
The injury happened during the offseason so probably after the trade. Also, M’s don’t have the budget left for Hosmer even if he somehow came at a big discount.
ayrbhoy
Sounds like the injury happened during strength and conditioning workouts/ weight-lifting which then affected his off-season hitting. No one knows the severity and whether he’ll be out come Opening Day. One more player trying too hard to impress his new team. We are cursed!!! At least it’s not an injury to a SP! We can afford to plug in a Vogie or Mike Ford with that lineup. Or worse case scenario pick up a 1 yr contract w a Lucas Duda type.
24TheKid
The front office and Servais said it happened early in the off-season.
em650r
Hope Peavy gets signed. I read the article on his two difficult times with his divorce and his friend that stole millions from him.
koolga
As a Sox fan, I wouldn’t mind seeing Peavy in Spring Training and sign a minor league deal. Good insurance in case ERod doesn’t bounce back or Price is a bust. He was a workhorse for the Sox in 2013. Need to see how he pitches first, but he has a reason and drive to come back.
astick
Without accosting me, please; why wouldn’t the Red Sox approach the Reds for Duvall? He can be gold glove level defense, plays okay third and first.
Brixton
Bad OBP skills + the cost of acquisition. There are just better options right now.
kbarr888
Marlins will be all over Jake Peavy…..Veteran hurler with a desire to start every 5th day.
Marlins need like 3 of those…..LOL
The Kids could all use his mentoring as well.
mack22 2
Peavey is done, stick a fork in him
OsStrohsNattyBohs
Orioles need to go out and get sign Moose, Cobb/Lynn and then trade Manny to the Indians for Carrasco and a couple young arms. Make it happen Danny D!
AM21
It’s an unusual dilemma for JDM and the Sox. The Sox have a glaring need on their roster, and only one FA comes close to filling that need: JDM. However, JDM isn’t nearly worth his asking price, and the neednis only for his bat, not his glove.
Then of course is the fact that teams don’t seem to be knocking down his door to sign him.
BusterMove
I stand by my opinion that Peavy should resurrect his career as a closer. His stuff is always great for one or two innings. Plus, he’s passionate and intimidating. It would be fun to see him scream at himself after striking out the last batter.
bcard12
Why is everyone pointing fingers at Dombrowksi for the Castillo, Pablo and Hanley bad contracts? All three were signed prior to Dom being hired as gm? Every single bad contract for the yankees was written by Cash. Totally different perspective as Dombroski has brought on sale, price, kimbrel and added depth pieces to the bullpen like thornberg, kelly, and carson smith……..Yes thornberg and smith both experiences injuries but who could predict that? he gave up a bumb SP and a .220 hitting platoon player for both… Give criticism to Cherington not dom.
SG
OK, so this article was written because DD said he was interested in a OF, right?
So was that BS or does anyone think they need and OF?
And if they get Nunez isn’t that the OF’r?
We also think they need a LRP.
So maybe Tony Watson?
And then they’re looking good
Nunez and Watson should guarantee them a playoff spot.
Barring major injuries.
