The Nationals have made late-winter signings in the past, and there’s certainly opportunity for the club to do so again given the large number of available free agents, MASNsports.com’s Mark Zuckerman writes. While the idea of the Nats signing Jake Arrieta, Alex Cobb, or Lance Lynn at a discounted price in March is tempting for a team that has toyed with upgrading the rotation, Zuckerman feels that Washington is more likely to add a reliever if a late signing is indeed in the cards. On the whole, the Nats aren’t under any real pressure to make any sort of move, given their deep roster.
Here’s more from around the NL East…
- The Mets have shown some interest in free agent right-hander Tim Lincecum this offseason, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. It’s possible they’ll be on hand for Lincecum’s upcoming showcase, though Heyman notes that it’s unclear which teams will join the previously reported Giants in attendance. Lincecum didn’t pitch at all in 2017 and it has been some time since he has been both healthy and effective, though scouts from several clubs are expected to check out the former two-time Cy Young Award winner.
- Anthony Swarzak’s two-year, $14MM contract from the Mets might not have been possible without some advice from Mickey Callaway, Swarzak tells the New York Daily News’ Peter Botte. The right-hander and his new manager first crossed paths in 2015 when Swarzak was pitching for the Indians and Callaway was the team’s pitching coach, and it was Callaway who pressed upon Swarzak the importance of better conditioning. “Most of [Callaway’s advice] was in the weight room and really dedicating myself off the field,” Swarzak said. “I didn’t really want to hear it at the time. But I took his advice and here we are three years later and I’m better than ever and throwing harder and doing things athletically in my delivery that I couldn’t do before. I know that’s what he was trying to get at, and I thank him now.” A major velocity boost helped Swarzak post a career year in 2017, with a 2.33 ERA, 10.6 K/9 and a 4.14 K/BB rate over 77 1/3 IP with the White Sox and Brewers.
- The Phillies’ bench situation is broken down by NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury, who notes that defensive versatility will be at a premium for a team that may have just four bench spots available. The Phils may need to deploy an eight-man bullpen to account for its injury-laden rotation, which leaves less room for position players in general, and especially players who can only fit in at one position (i.e. first baseman Tommy Joseph). Two of the bench spots are already filled by outfielder Nick Williams and the backup catcher, leaving a utility infield job up for grabs in Spring Training and possibly another reserve outfield job as well.

I would think Arrieta would be perfect fit for Nationals…
Alex Graboyes
Also alex cobb. Two great fits. Would be great if they signed both. Gonzalez scherzer strasburg arrieta, cobb. Killer rotation. Also roark and ross in the ranks
aff10
Signing both seems unnecessary to me. I could definitely see one of the two, but a second SP seems like a luxury item
kbarr888
Joe Ross had TJS in July last summer. He’s Out. Might possibly come back in late August, but can’t be counted on for much of a contribution at all.
fred-3
Because like the Nationals, he peaked 2-3 years ago?
dimitriinla
Sounds good but what’s their space before the luxury tax?
BlueJayFan1515
Non existent
baseball10
As a Braves fan please do. It will only further the fall off the Nationals will have within the next 2-3 years
Potpot106
Asa Phillies fan, I agree with the Braves fan. Can’t wait until the nationals collapse and when the Phillies steal Harper away from the nats next offseason
weenie2
Please, no Harper! Machado, yes…but not Harper. Let someone else break the bank on a ten year deal with this egotistical and overrated guy, who detracts instead of adding to the culture in the clubhouse.
SoCalBrave
As a Braves fan I agree with Potpot106 sign Harper and leave Machado to us.

Yanks should take a flyer on Tiny Tim
thegreatcerealfamine
Wtf man..
#Fantasygeekland
I’m sure if they sign him their fans will talk about how great he is and all that, but if not they will talk about how much they think he sucks
driftcat28 2
I’m a fan and I’ll say it right now, he sucks. Hard pass!
driftcat28 2
That being said I’d love to see him pitch again somewhere else lol
Kenleyfornia74
I think their goal is to win a championship. Having Tim Lincecum pitch and MLB game is very counter productive
thegreatcerealfamine
I wouldn’t even want him pitching in a AAA playoff game…
mike156
Eight man bullpen. That’s really nuts.
PhanaticDuck26
with no established MLB starters outside of Nola, an 8-man pen is a necessary preparation for a lot of 5-inning outings from the rotation…
czontixhldr
My hope is that one or two of the younger guys take a big step forward this season. They don’t need to be spectacular, but they need to go 6 innings. We’ll see.
Bryzzo2016
Oh, I hope the Nats agree that they don’t have any pressure to make any moves. Because right now, they don’t scare me.
Donnie B
I’m a Phillies fan, but the Nats are set up to win this year. Teams ought to be afraid of them, knowing when they get to the playoffs, they will go in knowing this could be their last shot to get to the WS in a long time. And anyone thinking that facing Scherzer / Strasburg / Gonzalez / Roark in the Playoffs don’t match or excel over the other playoff teams are dilusional. And their back end of the bullpen are really good to handle the 7th-9th innings. Better than most clubs.
Nationals:
1B) Zimmerman
2B) Murphy
SS) Turner
3B) Rendon
C) Wieters
LF) Eaton
CF) Taylor
RF) Harper
Bench: Adams / Goodwin / Difo / Montero
SP) Scherzer
SP) Strasburg
SP) Gonzalez
SP) Roark
SP) Milone / Voth / Beede
RP) Doolittle
RP) Madson
RP) Kintzler

I feel the chances that Lincecum ends up with The Marlins are very high.
fasbal1
San Diego is my guess
mikeyank55
The Mets are a great place for players who resemble a freak show.
BlueJayFan1515
Yeah. It seems fitting that they would be interested in him.
WarrenSpahn
because weed is legal in California?
Let Timmy Smoke!
brucewayne
Still not legal in MLB !
GareBear
Actually it is not a banned substance at the major league level but it is banned in the minors
mikeyank55
It’s not banned in Flushing. MLB rules are very casually enforced to give players maximum freedom.
Ronk325
The Carlos Santana signing (which still makes very little sense) blocking Nick Williams from a starting job is ridiculous. Hoskins should have been the starting 1B which would have allowed Williams to start in LF.
PhanaticDuck26
not sure why Nick is listed as bench player here; he will likely start more games early on in RF than Altherr will, but I think it will be relatively balanced between the two
Ronk325
Both should be starting while Hoskins plays 1B but Santana is blocking that from happening
PhanaticDuck26
I would rather have the known quantity in Santana manning 1B and making those around him in the lineup that much better. While I agree with you and want to see as much of both Williams and Altherr as I can, running both of them out there as starters provides very little depth in the likely event that Altherr spends time on the DL. I cant wait to see Santana rake in this lineup.
czontixhldr
I think you hit the nail on the head. Personally, I like Altherr more than Williams – I just like his overall game better, and when he’s on the field and uninjured he’s a very productive player. If you toss his wrist injury marred 2016, in 2015 and 2017 he slashed .263/.339/.509 in 572 PA. That’s a pretty good player. He also has reverse splits so far..
Williams strikes out at about the same rate, but doesn’t hit for quite as much power, though with Williams we have a much smaller sample size to work with.
I like both players, but I suspect that if they both have good seasons and the club is anywhere sniffing a the 2nd WC during the summer, one of Williams/Altherr/Herrera will be bound elsewhere for a SP.
But I am rotten at predicting the future, so ignore the previous paragraph.
PhanaticDuck26
Arrieta 4/100 mil to the Phillies. I feel like I should welcome this move as a Phils fan, but I kinda don’t. I love the way the lineup has been put together: Hernandez, Herrera, Hoskins, Santana, Alfaro (who is gonna break out big-time this year), Williams, Franco, Crawford. That offense is gonna score runs. Obviously the rotation is the glaring weakness and I think one impact starter could push the Phils to contention, especially in a division with WAS being the only real threat (Mets will underachieve). One impact starter could do it for the Phillies. Is Arrieta that guy? I just dont see it…
cmancoley
I don’t know if they’re offense is really that intimidating. I think they have the potential to be average at best, but right now I still just feel like there’s a lot of question marks beyond Hoskins, Santana, and Herrera
czontixhldr
I’m a Phils fan and love Hoskins, but he’s had 309 MLB PA. I think there are still a few questions marks about him as well, particulary since he faded at the end of the season.
Was it really fatigue, which is the current team narrative, or did other teams find a hole in his swing?
Also, Santana was brought in because he gets on base, not because of any huge upgrade in power. – he’s slugged .450 the last three seasons, and both Williams and Altherr are probably capable of doing that. Williams BB rate in the minors was 4.99% in over 2400 PA, and 5.38% in MLB (343 PA). If Williams doesn’t hit he’s probably not going to get on base enough to satisfy this front office, and with a .266 BA in 800+ AAA PA, it is questionable whether he’s going to be able to do it – thus, Santana.
phillies2018
I think a mid season trade for a better starter than what’s available now, or is at least closer to 25-28 yrs old, not 30-32 like the current cast of dudes
Phillies2017
I hope ur username is more accurate than mine was.
Phillies2017
Honestly, I love the Phillies situation right now. Are we winning the world series in ’18? Very unlikely. Can we be legitimately competitive? I certainly believe so (assuming some improvement from the rotation).
The way to maximize potential:
Rotation: Obviously Nola and Eickhoff, sign Cashner, claim Joan Gregorio (who’s out of options and seems likely to hit the wire) and let Eflin, Thompson and Lively battle it out for the final spot
Bullpen: 8 guys: Neris closing, Neshek and Hunter first set-ups, Garcia and Morgan steady relief, Vinny and Pivetta initial middle relief, eventual potential higher leverage situations (long term, I think Vin is a closer), final spot between Milner/Arano/Edubray/Leiter/Rios
Catcher: I’d try to trade Rupp, Alfaros out of options and Knapp deserves to stay on the roster
Infield: Santana (1b), Cesar (2b), JP (SS), Franco (3B) best ST performer in Rosales/Florimon/Flaherty
OF: Dubs, Hoskins, Altherr/Williams platoon
Last bench spot- best offensive runner up in camp, or say screw it and go with an extra pitcher. Finally, don’t trade Cesar unless Franco and Kingery both prove that they’re major leaguers. Losing Cesar would hurt badly in that respect.
Sorry for the book, Im just excited that Philadelphia has good sports again for the first time in almost a decade.
WarrenSpahn
yes, congrats on your Iggles
the Phillies in 2018? not feelin it
czontixhldr
I don’t really expect the Phillies to contend in 2018, but I do expect them to be better than they were in 2017. Lots can happen in baseball, so predictions this early are meaningless, especially when we don’t know who opens the season healthy on each squad, but they’ll be more fun to watch than they were the first half of last season.
soxfan33
Who are they throwing to???? Sign JT then worry about spot 3 or 5 in the rotation.
BlueJayFan1515
They can’t exactly ‘sign JT’, but they can trade for him.
weenie2
I hope the Phils don’t go after Vargas, Cashner, or Tillman. They all suck and offer no upgrade at all while blocking the potential development of a Ben Lively, Jake Thompson, or Drew Anderson. Lance Lynn is another story, however. If they can sign him on a 3 year deal for $54-60 mil they should do it. The SP I’m most interested in possibly stepping into the rotation at some point this year is Jose Taveras. He rose three levels last year and dominated at Lehigh Valley in his final seven starts there (41 IP, 26 H, 1.32 ERA, 15 BBs, 37 Ks, .176 BAA, 1.00 WHIP). For the season, with 16 starts at Clearwater and 2 at Reading prior to his jump to AAA, he had a 2.22 ERA, 154.1 IP, 122 H, 39 BBs, 140 Ks, .215 BAA, and a 1.04 WHIP. He turned 24 in November. His 2016 season at Lakewood, at age 22, saw pretty much the same type of production.

Swarzak’s numbers are wrong
