The Braves are attempting to add an outfielder, Jon Morosi of MLB.com tweets. With soon-to-be ex-Ray Corey Dickerson now available, Morosi wonders if Atlanta could emerge as a suitor for him. The Braves currently have two entrenched starting outfielders in center fielder Ender Inciarte and right fielder Nick Markakis, and all-world prospect Ronald Acuna is charging toward the majors and should take over left in the near future. Speculatively, after Acuna comes up, Dickerson could bump Markakis from a starting role. Not only is Dickerson likely the better of the pair, but he’s much younger (28 to 34) and comes with two years of control to Markakis’ one.
Now for the latest on a couple of Atlanta’s division rivals:
- Given that he’s in the last year of his contract, left-hander Gio Gonzalez realizes he may not be in a Nationals uniform in 2019, Jamal Collier of MLB.com writes. Gonzalez would like to remain in Washington, though. “I’ve been here for seven years. To me, this is home,” he said. “That being said, I have to do my part.” If he’s unable to work out a new deal with the Nats in the next year, Gonzalez would hit the open market at the age of 33 – a prospect that’s not too appealing these days, Collier notes. “To see these guys get a team, it would make you feel a little more comfortable, a little more safe,” Gonzalez said of all the unsigned veterans remaining with spring training underway.
- Right-hander Joe Ross, one of Gonzalez’s teammates, is making encouraging progress in his recovery from the Tommy John procedure he underwent last July, Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com reports. Ross is currently throwing off flat ground from 75 feet and aiming to return to the Nationals sometime after the All-Star break. “That’s in my head, for sure,” the 24-year-old said of potentially making an impact in 2018. “My arm will dictate that. But that’s how I feel, and I’m looking forward to helping the team in the second half.”
- If the Phillies don’t acquire starting pitching help, there’s a chance they’ll turn to a nine-man bullpen at times this year, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic (subscription required). It doesn’t appear the Phillies have a rotation capable of working deep in games, observes Gelb, who points out that they’ll be able to shuttle most of their relievers between the majors and minors throughout the season. Further, rookie manager Gabe Kapler is known for outside-the-box thinking and comes from a Dodgers organization that’s unafraid to use its bullpen rather often. Kapler admitted Saturday that a nine-man relief corps may be an option for Philly. “I can envision a couple of different scenarios that would allow us to carry nine in the ’pen,” Kapler said. “Now a lot of that is a little too early to X and O about, but how cool would it be to have that level of depth and those many mix and match options to go after the opposition? That would be a pretty cool thing for us.”

So Nick would become an expensive bench guy
schaeferboom12
Pretty much. It’s the last year of his deal anyway. If Acuna needs more seasoning they have a little bit of insurance.
bastros88
well Acuna isn’t starting the year in the majors, so he wouldn’t be a bench piece, at least to start the season
Braveslifer
Nick will be bench piece after about three weeks…
RunDMC
Wouldn’t be for that long. BAL is bound is get him back for nothing, which is fine by me.
jdgoat
Is Acuna a bad defender or why is he going to take over left field?
biff_pocoroba
I don’t think he’s bad, but center is held down by a Gold Glover, and right by an $11M boat anchor.
RunDMC
We are paying a lot more than that for Kemp to play elsewhere, why is Markakis any different if there’s a cheaper upgrade. Dickerson could also be a nice trade piece with a good year – and SunTrust is built for lefties.
Travis’ Wood
He can handle center but Inciarte is amazing out there.
casualatlfan
It’s not him being a bad defender (he’s actually a good one), but the combination of having Markakis and SunTrust Park having a larger area in LF compared to RF, so it’s better for him to cover LF and Markakis stay in RF.
firehombre
Acuna is looked at as being a really good defender. The reason why he will be playing left field, at least in the beginning, is because left field at Suntrust is very spacious and requires a better than average guy to play it.
CubsRebsSaints
Enciarte is a gold glove major league center fielder. Simple.
Backatitagain
Could easily see Markakis, Dickerson, Inciarte outfield for 2018 with Accuna potentially serving a role as Andrew Jones did when he broke in while Gant and Grisssom were still effective. This give the Braves a tradeable mid-year asset. But, don’t expect anything from the idiots running the organization.
biff_pocoroba
The same idiots who’ve provided the best farm system in the game?
RunDMC
… and despite having 13 prospects taken away…you’re welcome, LAA, for Soto and Maitan.
bravesandcrewfan
I actually really like the idea of Dickerson on the Braves. One of the best fits (except for maybe orioles) and we have the payroll space and the need. If he works out, extend him and we have a solid outfield in him, inciarte, and Acuna. If not, sign someone else next Offseason like harper or Blackmon (hey, a man can dream). After that the only uncertainty is shortstop and third, which could either A: fix itself with a Swanson breakout and Riley coming up, or B: Albies moves to his natural position of shortstop and we get a new second baseman (Murphy?) and 3rd. Assuming the pitching works out even OK, the Braves will be strong contenders in 2019 with a weakening nationals team.
chopnation63
Anybody but Harper. I don’t want that trash on our team.
steelerbravenation
For me the Braves have to get Dickerson. They play Dickerson, Inciarte & Markakis until Acuna is absolutely ready. I want to make sure he has developed enough. I still feel the Braves rushed Heyward and Francour in a way their development was hurt.
bobtillman
On a team that’s trying to build with pitching, Dickerson’s a disaster waiting to happen. Defensive metrics are nutty…the guy’s a HORRENDOUS outfielder. That, combined wit is 30% K-rate, will cost you more games than help you win any…Everybody knows this, which is why the Rays can’t literally give him away……
Cameron Maybin (among many, many others) is a better (not to mention cheaper) option…..
Zach725
Acuna and Ender will be in the outfield with him. And he is an average defender, so it would actually be about the same as having Markakis.
atlho
nothing says HORRENDOUS like +1 DRS the past 2 years…
steelerbravenation
Maybin doesn’t bat cleanup
soggycereal
wow. most of the time people over-value OFFENSIVE metrics… you the first person i’ve seen do the opposite.

9 man bullpen is unrealistic for too long IMO. not only do you leave yourself with effectively a 2 man bench plus a backup catcher . If you don’t trust your starters to get 5 plus innings per start ,get new starters. And ask the Orioles how well the frequent AAA – MLB shuttle works …..
Regi Green
If the Phillies don’t add a starter, maybe they should consider a 6 man rotation instead of a 8-9 man bullpen. Nola-Eickhoff-Velasquez-Pivetta-Lively-Thompson-Eflin-Leiter-Eshelman-Leibrandt-Kilome-Taveras…They have enough arms to have 6 in Philly and Lehigh, and I’m probably even forgetting a name or 2.
raef715
i dont see the point of a 6 man staff, but the thought of a 8 or 9 man bullpen annoys me more. So, Gabe Kapler, no i dont think its cool to have a below average starting staff then play 5 to 6 innings of mix and match with a 9 man staff for a team thats not trying to contend still apparently.
Regi Green
I don’t really like the idea of either one myself, but I’d rather have a 6 man rotation over 9 bullpen arms. Atleast with the 6 starters we could hopefully get 1 or 2 of the bubble guys to find a rhythm and cement themselves as major league starters.
raef715
i hear you but no point giving off Nola that many days between starts. I get the idea of giving VV, Eickhoff, Pivetta and then either Lively/Eflin/ Eshelman shots this year, but no need to create a 6th rotation spot to see if you might have another back end starter on your hands- phils have plenty of those now in their system.
jett
I think it’s just a large amount of speculation because there’s so many names to comb through and all of them have had issues with consistency and/or can’t stay healthy. Nola is the only lock in that rotation and it seems the Phillies would more open to giving guys chances before diving into the market in 2019.
It seems the Phillies will invest FA dollars in bats and develop arms unless they can get guys on short term deals or on a discount. I think the guy who changed it was Adam Morgan.
A struggling LOGGY type guy who showed flashes but couldn’t stick in the rotation at the MLB level. They stick him in the bullpen and outside of 2 appearances he was lights out and no only did it fill out a bullpen spot at a lower salary number than what you see FA guys get even including the guys like Hunter and Neshek that the Phillies signed. And his move to the bullpen frees up a rotation spot for guys like Pivetta and his ilk to show if they should be a part of the MLB long term plan or not.
Cat Mando
A 9 man pen will sure help shorten game time /s
A 6 man rotation is no better an idea than the five man. Teams started with a 5 man in the early 70’s with the idea that it would help pitchers. Has it? Not in todays game where speed is king. A 5 or 6 man only helps a team when they have a staff of quality starters and that doesn’t happen often. Heck, even the Dodgers left the 5 man and went back to a 4 man in the mid 70’s. Why…because they no longer had a 5 man rotation of quality like the did earlier in the decade.
Speed is king in baseball and has been for some time. It’s also the reason TJS has risen so much. Throwing hard constantly and overhand is one of the worse things for an elbow. Overhand is not a natural throwing motion but a great many sidewinders have control problems. Someday hopefully teams will once again value control and pitching over throwing. It’ great when you have a power arm pitcher with control but they are few and far between.
jakec77
I could see a 9 man bullpen- if they go to a 4 man rotation (maybe drop in a 5th starter as needed); if you are only asking the starting pitchers to give you 4 or 5 innings, why do theh need a week off between starts?

Hey that might anger mlbpa
Mr.baseball
Braves need to play what they have right now.
garrog1949
If CARDS sign Moose maybe AA could trade for Gyrko,ONeill and C.Greene by sending Allard,Ruiz,Demeritte, and Wisler.

Trade with Padres……Toussaint and Cabrera for Renfroe. Trade Markakis to Balt. for T.Scott.

My best trade idea yet
