Some items from both of the Big Apple’s teams…
- David Wright still doesn’t know when, or even if, he’ll be able to play again, though the Mets captain told MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo and other reporters that he is still determined to return to the field. “It would be easy if I didn’t have that drive to get back out there,” Wright said. “If I didn’t love what I did, that would certainly make things easier. But I do love what I do….When it’s all said and done, I want to be able to say I did everything I could. If it works, that’s obviously the goal. And if it doesn’t work, then I’ll rest easy knowing I gave it my best shot.” Wright played 75 games total in 2015-16 and then missed all of last season due to various surgeries stemming from spinal stenosis. For their part, the Mets are fully supportive of Wright’s efforts, and manager Mickey Callaway told the third baseman that the team still values his clubhouse leadership.
- Though the Mets’ offseason lacked any headline-grabbing signings or trades, the New York Post’s Ken Davidoff is still giving the team an A (albeit “graded on a curve”) for its winter moves. Davidoff feels the Mets did well in adding quality talent and depth without committing too much in long-term salary to the likes of Jay Bruce, Jason Vargas, Todd Frazier, Anthony Swarzak, Adrian Gonzalez, and Jose Reyes. As well, all of those players were signings, so the Mets didn’t have to trade from their already-thin minor league system.
- The Yankees seem likely to save most of their remaining payroll space to address pitching needs at the trade deadline, Joel Sherman of the New York Post opines. In the short term, the Yankees will look to trade for a low-cost third baseman to bolster their infield. The team is looking to be as flexible as possible given its desire to stay under the luxury tax threshold while still filling any remaining roster holes, and I agree with Sherman that the Bronx Bombers have more fill-in pitching depth than infield depth. It doesn’t make sense for the club to spend much on an infielder since Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar are seemingly on the cusp of regular duty at second and third base.
- “A source with knowledge of the [Yankees’] personnel decisions” told NJ Advance Media’s Brendan Kuty that Tim Lincecum looked “fine” in his recent showcase for scouts and that Lincecum will likely receive a minor league contract offer from a team. The implication, however, was that New York wouldn’t be the team in question. The Yankees were one of between 15-20 teams who sent evaluators to watch Lincecum throw on Thursday.

Thanks Joel we can always count on you…
FriendOfBoras
Lincecum likely to get a minor league deal? lol is this guy nuts!?!? Lincecum is a top of the rotation ace and will draw several high dollar offers. This isn’t the old lincecum, he touched 98mph during his show showcase! His slider is nastier than ever! And scouts and team representatives in attendance were blown away…..other than the Yankees apparently. Lincecum is a beast! I just hope my cubbies pick him up.
kenly0
lol. ok. His fastball was mostly between 90-92 and topped out at 93.

Top of the rotation Ace? Dude it’s 2018, have you not watched any baseball in the past 5 years
greatdaysport
He’s done. Good memories though.

Read his name…
ReverieDays
Another “hilarious” troll, how original.
cubbies95
Would love to see Lincecum in Cubbie blue as well. Long relief or middle man
greensquirrel
this post has to a joke, and I’m assuming it is. Lincecum would be lucky to get ANY deal, including a minor league one. He is a washed up has-been and doesn’t project to be a factor on any ML team … one year minor league deal is all he can hope for, and given his recent perforce, its noting but a pipe dream. Welcome back to obscurity, Tim.
wrigleywannabe
he can move in next to you
brucenewton
Did he rediscover his ability to locate?
gmenfan
Lincecum never had the ability to locate. He was all velocity and movement in his prime. You get by with that at 97. At 89, not so much.
24TheKid
Everyone read the guys name before you freak out, it’s actually pretty funny.
mlb1225
I too hope your Cubs pick up Lincecum.
saintchristafa
He’s back guys. He did the same Lincecum rant last post. Please get rid of your 2012 copy of MLB 2k12 and watch baseball

Fabulous Friend of Boras.I am still laughing.
pinterman
98?! Is this his agent posting? He’s never thrown 98 in his career!
astros_should_be_fortyfives
This is not 2011 fantasy baseball, ……or is it?

One would think the Marlins could get in on Linecum. Affordable, could start, and potential trade bait at the deadline if he performs well.
slider32
The Yanks don’t need to add anybody right now, they should wait until the deadline, give some of the prospects a chance if need be.
southbeachbully
Adding him on a minor league deal shouldn’t be an issue or the Yanks. In fact. having a former Cy Young winner in the same locker room with Chase Adams, Justin Sheffield, Domingo Acevedo, Domingo German and possibly Albert Abreu could be a good thing. There might be considerable wisdom he could impart on the youngsters.

Wright just wants to collect his 20 million for this season. Then he’ll retire once the last two years kick in, which are only 15 and 12 million.
Bill
Wouldn’t you? And insurance covers 75% of it, so it’s not costing the Mets that much. At some point if he definitely can’t come back, the Mets and the insurance company will probably make a deal with him.
deweybelongsinthehall
If he has anything left, it’s probably in the bullpen where he only goes around the order once. If he bounces back, hope he ends his career in SF where it started. Would be great for both him and the local fanbase.
brucenewton
Wright’s love and drive is another 20 million to give it another college try for a few days. When his contract runs out he’ll retire. If he was without a contract right now he’d retire. He should think about how pushing this could compromise his body later in life. Takes a big person to walk away from tens of millions, even with tens of millions banked. That’s not David Wright and probably wouldn’t be me either.
wrigleywannabe
so, you know him personally? I’d check out the terms of his contract before you spout off
One Fan
Why would he be so dumb as to walk away from millions that he was guaranteed.
It does not take a big person to do so it takes a dumb one which he is not
LongTimeFan1
It’s not about money.
Some fans are just all too quick to project their views of money as the over-riding factor as if it’s the player’s – whether true or not.
Fact:
Wright still gets what’s owed to him whether he hangs it up for medical disability or not.
Prince Fielder’s medical retirement is example.
bosox90
Wow, brucenewton you must feel pretty stupid, huh. Maybe do some research before bashing someone.
bayshark24
I wouldnt rule lincecum out. Im a giants fan and while he was pitching like trash he wasnt in shape. I remember yoked timmy back in the day and if his fastball is up to 93 then he will be about half as good as he was which is pretty damn good. Anybody remember when the giants brought him in relief during the world series and he was lights out? I wouldnt underestimate him because he will make great hitters look like complete fools. If his velocity is indeed up i would most definitely take a flyer out on him. Minor league prove it deal for sure
mack22 2
All Lincecum needs is that “go to pitch”. His stuff is pretty good, at least it was an in that workout. He’ll be offered a minor league deal with a invite to spring training I bettch
oneiblnd
The Orioles need to take a chance on him.

Let David Wright get his money. He’s been a great Met on and off the field. His illness is just going to get worse as he ages and he’ll need all the money he can get just to be treated over those years. Insurance picks up most of his contract and the Wilpon’s deserve to pick up the rest. Why do these owners any favors. God only knows how much money the Wilpon’s have made off of Wright’s name.
Paul Heyman
Lots of teams to sign lincecum, but at least hopefully that team doesn’t get the 2016 version of him.
pugbuttsupreme
A minors deal is the only option because it’s smart. It removes any liability from the team that signs him. You give him a big league contract you’re basically saying “we believe he’s going to contribute”. But with a minors deal it’s a win win. If he plays in some big league games and falls flat on his face, you just cut bait and no one bats an eye. But if he contributes like a decent 4-5 starter (maybe 3 if he pitches REALLY well, or if he’s on a bad team) then you look like a genius. Getting a decent rotation guy for a cheap contract makes a team look very smart
