Interesting comp of Didi Gregorius and Jean Segura, middle infielders born less than a month apart.
Gregorius has posted 11.5 fWAR in 635 career games, including 6.6 fWAR in 289 games over the last two seasons and 3.9 fWAR in 136 games last year.
Segura has posted 11.5 fWAR in 757 career games, including 7.9 fWAR in 278 games over the last two seasons and 2.9 fWAR in 125 games last year.
ZiPS projects 2018 WAR of 2.2 in 593 plate appearances for Gregorius and 2.1 in 634 plate appearances for Segura.
Segura was a year and four months away free agency when Seattle signed him to the five-year, $70 million extension with team option for a sixth season. Gregorius is a year and eight months away from free agency.
Segura would seem to be a decent comp for Gregorius.
I would say this is true for all Yankee fans. We would happily and gladly give that kind of deal to DiDi if not more. He has truly become one of the top 5 SS in the game.
Top 5 is a reach but I would will say he was better then I expected him to be. The Yankees would be smart to lock him up at some point I would say top 10 shortstop but not top 5.
