Rounding up the latest minor league moves from around baseball…
- The Orioles have outrighted Jaycob Brugman to Triple-A after the outfielder cleared waivers, as per a team announcement. Baltimore designated Brugman for assignment earlier this week to create roster space for the newly re-signed Chris Tillman. Brugman, acquired in a trade with the A’s back in November, will continue to compete for a big league job with the Orioles, though the O’s have further addressed their need for left-handed bats with the recent signings of Colby Rasmus and Pedro Alvarez. The 26-year-old Brugman made his MLB debut last season, batting .266/.346/.343 over 162 plate appearances for Oakland.

I don’t get how teams value players on waivers. Literally every player I would imagine to be claimed clears and vice versa. Brugman was certainly pretty solid for the A’s last season.

Well teams would have to formulate a trade with the Orioles for him and probably couldn’t/didn’t want to. I can’t imagine going through the effort of making a deal with the Orioles (typically not easy) for the sub-replacement level guy was worth it for teams.

No trade would have been involved in a waiver claim in this instance. Also plenty of teams make trades of replacement level players with the Orioles. The dumpster diving player market is when DD lives.

Brugman was worth -0.3 WAR, despite batting .266 with .346 OBP.
His fangraphs WAR was -0.4.
His Defense was atrocious: -9 DRS, -6.7 UZR, -24.7 UZR/150, in 347.2 OF Innings. (315 in CF)
ZIPS projects 481 PA, -0.9 WAR
What do you see in this guy?
xabial
ZIPS (Which projected +1 WAR for Jabari Blash Lol)
Projected: .229 BA, 10 HR, -0.9 WAR, .293 OBP in 481 PA.
Again I ask you people: “What do you see in this guy”?

It was also his debut last year. Yes, he’s not exactly young to be making his debut, but I think he deserves a bigger trial before we determine he is a sub replacement player.
I think, given an extended chance, he could be a slightly above replacement player. There is plenty to like about that as a pre arbitration player who also hits lefty (a need for the Orioles in particular).

“given an extended chance, he could be a slightly above replacement player”
That can be said regarding just about everyone though
And theoretically, half of the Replacement players teams are forced to use should be expected to fall into the “slightly above replacement level” category considering replacement level is an average.
So you’re kind of just saying “give him enough time and I think maybe he could be in the upper 50% of replacement guys instead of the bottom 50% he has played like so far” …not exactly something teams should adjust rosters for, you know
kenneth cole
Isn’t he known for good defense in CF?
mehs
In the majors he rated at a -34 Rdrs/yr last year for CF. So that would be really bad defense in CF.

Yeah I agree. I thought he would be claimed
