The Dodgers announced that they’ve claimed right-handed reliever J.T. Chargois off waivers from the Twins. Left-hander Julio Urias has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported yesterday that Chargois had hit the waiver wire. Urias underwent shoulder surgery late last June and could miss the entire 2018 season.
The 27-year-old Chargois was Minnesota’s second-round pick out of Rice back in 2012 but has seen his development slowed by multiple injuries throughout his career, including Tommy John surgery and a stress reaction in his elbow this past season. When healthy, Chargois features a mid-90s fastball that can scrape triple digits. He’s dominated throughout his minor league tenure when healthy, working to a career 1.91 ERA with 10.5 K/9 against 3.5 BB/9, but his injuries have limited him to just 113 1/3 innings in the minors and another 23 in the Majors, where he owns a 4.70 ERA and a 17-to-12 K/BB ratio.
For the Twins, they now have an open 40-man roster spot to work with. There’s been no corresponding roster move announced to go along with Chargois’ placement on waivers, though the Twins have been linked to various pitchers, both in free agency and trade, even after acquiring Jake Odorizzi from the Rays. They’ll now have an open spot to accommodate the acquisition of another arm or a right-handed bat — another asset they’re rumored to covet — though there’s no indication that any such move is looming in the immediate future.

Literally the last team in the Majors

He had a 3.36 FIP, and he even allowed 0 HR in 23.0 IP

Could be a future Morrow.
BlueSkyLA
Today, or to Morrow?
LADreamin
Knee slapper if I ever seen one. All I read was triple digits and I knew Friedman would be all over him
BlueSkyLA
So you mean he’s our future Chris Hatcher?
LADreamin
Please God no, I can’t take another Hatcher on this team smh
mannyl101
No don’t say that! Haha hopefully the next Morrow!
fox471 Dave
Smile.
juicemane
With only one good year you could literally list thousands of relievers, not just Morrow

So seeing how it’s the Dodgers, expect him to be sent back through within the next few weeks.

Currently, the Dodgers have Henry Owens and Dylan Baker who were also acquired through DFA limbo. I think we can all anticipate what happens next.
norcalblue
My money is on Henry Owens to be the first to go.

every team claims guys and tries to sneak them through waivers. Sometimes they get claimed, but if not it’s a great way to build up AAA depth as most of these guys are fringe MLB players. they’ll probably place J.T. on the 60 day DL and claim somebody else
stymeedone
Wouldnt Minnesota have done that, if it was an option? Then they would not have had to put him through waivers to open a spot in the first place.
bigkempin
A lot of teams do that. It doesn’t hurt the team when they have an open spot on the 40 man. Claim a player who they feel has upside (and options) and send them to the minors for depth. Some have to be exposed to waivers and get claimed by other teams. Doesn’t hurt the team at all to try and add depth.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
It’s par for the course. Teams still need guys to throw at AAA. Basically the 39th and 40th roster spots are for building around the edges. The Dodgers tend to be on the active side. If they find a guy they like to keep then it’s worth it other wise they just spin it no biggie.
Waittillthisyear
Good stuff Phillies2017! Although, if Chargois is healthy and gets a chance to show his talent, it’s hard to see him joining that list. His stuff is great, he’s more than proved himself in the minors, and he pitches with a flair that says he not only belongs in a late inning MLB role, but wants to be the guy. So yeah, could be an impact pickup for the Dodgers….IF he’s healthy.
fox471 Dave
Geez! Who has this much time on his hands?
mannyl101
Nice work! But I think if healthy this guy is special!
kleppy12
I doubt JT will allow them to do that, if placing him on the 60 day DL was an option the Twins would have just done that.
jimdevinmoriah
And non of those names on the dodgers waiver list complied by Phillies 27 is on a major league roster I don’t believe. So basically just going through the motions for nothing.
brucenewton
Pitching depth is going to bite the Dodgers if injuries strike. They always do, who’s making 30 starts on the Dodgers? They can always send more prospects for some at that deadline I guess.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
That’s the thing about the Dodgers they don’t necessarily need someone to make 30 starts. There’s depth in the minors to cover a spot start. There is also talent to make a trade. The CBA also is going to have an early effect on the schedule with all the off days. For the Dodgers I wouldn’t be to concerned about the depth. I’d be more concerned about the deadline and where he fits in for a playoff run.
BlueSkyLA
The concern at the deadline is the same as now: the luxury tax limit. Exceeding it is going into no-man’s land as far as the Dodgers are concerned. It’s far from clear how they find payroll space in July to make adds any easier than they are finding it now.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I’m not sure that’s such a concern. The prorated portion, of the 2 months of salary they are responsible for, actually is probably the way they were headed regardless of the talk concerning Darvish. Even in comparison they spent ~6-8M at the deadline last year. If we’re talking about the addition of another 6-8M which I find somewhat hard to figure, because there aren’t necessarily any expensive upcoming FAs that fit their needs. Even if there were they have enough smaller contracts that would/could be moved without hurting their depth. If we we’re to assume they have ~7M set aside for Maeda’s bonuses there’s still wiggle room to make add at the deadline. I wouldn’t be at all worried about that part.
BlueSkyLA
It sure looks like an issue. They don’t seem to have much if any wiggle room now and the prorates aren’t going to make enough difference if they need a large ticket item in July. Anyone they trade at the deadline will also be prorated. The math is hard to escape.
Juelz05
Depth in our rotation and the trade deadline are the least of our concerns. We have seven starters who could pitch for anyone else in our division(Kersh, Wood, Hill, Maeda, Ryu, Buehler, Urias). Urias will be our mid season acquisition. Stripling and Stewart are fine in a spot start here and there, and don’t be surprised if Font gives us a few as well, his numbers in AAA last year warrant that even if his opportunity last year didn’t. Analytics have changed starting pitchers expectations and we have to look to last year becoming the norm rather than some silly trend. Even Kershaw needs to skip starts, it’s about who’s freshest in October rather than August. We’re going to be better than fine, our biggest concern is Kemp, he has the ability to force his way into being our every day left fielder with his bat, but offers little in the way of clubhouse leadership and defense, two things we have worked very hard to improve with this new ownership. I love that he’s back, our lineup looks amazing, and it may make a Forsythe expendable, but if not we’re as deep as anyone with a great mix. I look forward to this year! Praying for health!
BlueSkyLA
Pray for health is right. The issue with the depth in the rotation is that it’s all essentially at the bottom end. Urias, don’t expect to see him pitch this year, and even if he manages a return by late in the season he will be coming back from nearly two years of inactivity. So those expectations should be very low. Stripling and Stewart are good depth options at the bottom of the rotation. Ryu may never be the pitcher he was before the shoulder problems. Maeda looks a whole lot more effective out of the bullpen. Buehler is just too green to think about as making much difference this year. So my greatest concern is Kershaw. The chances that his back will ail him again are close to 100% and nobody they have available can be expected cover any the top slots in the rotation. Puts a lot of pressure on Hill, the oldest member of the roster after Utley. Kemp doesn’t concern me much. If his renewed physique doesn’t improve his defense he will be cut and they will go with some combination of Pederson, Toles, Hernandez, and Thompson in LF. There they have some options. In the rotation, not so much.
mannyl101
Agree
mannyl101
Let’s see the roaster on opening day! I’m positive there will be several moves before the season starts! I just don’t see Kemp breaking camp among certain others + I’m hoping we can find a taker for Grandal
mannyl101
Love the team but I’m hoping we can move Grandal & Kemp! And Maybe we can get a reliever!
mannyl101
Smart thinking!
P.s. glad we didn’t re-sign Darvish!
