Right-hander Mike Foltynewicz has lost his arbitration case against the Braves, tweets Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. He’ll take home $2.2MM in 2018, his first of four potential arbitration years, falling just short of the $2.3MM he requested. The salary comes in $500K shy of the $2.7MM figure projected by MLBTR’s Matt Swartz.
The defeat for the 26-year-old Foltynewicz comes on the heels of his third season with the Braves, who acquired him in 2015 as part of a deal with the Astros that centered on Evan Gattis. A former promising prospect in Houston, the hard-throwing Foltynewicz has emerged as a competent rotation piece with the Braves over the past couple years. Dating back to 2016, the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder has made 51 appearances (50 starts) and pitched to a 4.58 ERA/4.29 FIP over 277 1/3 innings. He tossed a career-high 154 frames in 2017 and recorded a 4.79 ERA/4.33 FIP, 8.36 K/9 and 3.45 BB/9.
Now that Folty’s case is settled, the Braves’ work on the arbitration front is done for the offseason, as MLBTR’s Arb Tracker shows.

Sad he deserves that extra cash

“New boss same as the old boss”
ifonlydetroitcoulddraft
I wish you guys would just write who wins the case. Reading the headline that player defeats team or team defeats player makes me cringe. Players want more money and teams want to save money. They aren’t trying to defeat each other. It’s just business imho
the kutch
It’s difficult to see how ANY player loses in arbitration…Even if they’ve had a bad/horrible previous season, they still have the nerds to request an outrageous pay increase, which is greater than the pay increase their employer is offering (God only knows why these guys deserve pay increases in the first place!!)…I love the game, hate the business…I hope the players strike and the Owners come to their senses ….the high cost of superstars, I get…it’s the high cost of mediocrity that makes me crazy
Daryl125
They earn a raise because they are underpaid (relative to value) in their ore-arb years. Regardless of their last season, they earned a raise over that figure in years prior.
TDKnies 2
Exactly. Raises are the whole point of arbitration! Not because you necessarily did better than last year, but because it’s the system they agreed on to transition players / teams from a guy making league minimum towards making what he’s actually worth.

They couldn’t just agree at $2.25 million …. really over $100 K they couldn’t agree?

4.87 ERA?. He’s lucky to get that
redsfan48
His peripherals suggested that he was a better pitcher than that. I’d expect him to be around 4.00 this year.
Altanta Barves
His career numbers suggest that he’s not a better pitcher than that. I’d expect him to be back around 5.00 this year and every year moving forward.

What a horrible title to the article. I mean for real. It’s a simple article, bad writing from start to finish
cxcx
Title is fine but I agree the article is really poorly written. It reads like a high schooler wrote it, all the spots where he is forcing in like the guy’s height and weight for context thinking “Adding this phrase will make my post more interesting and substantial.” But it’s just filler in a lot of instances. And then the sporadic efforted casualness like why Arb Tracker instead of Arbitration Tracker in the last sentenece…it’s called the Arbitration Tracker. Please just write simple sentences bringing us the information…it’s a sports website, you don’t have to be Hemingway.

3 paragraphs on a free website, man. Good luck to your kids.
Josue
For a professional writer on a public forum criticism is important. It may be free and only three paragraphs, but when your job is to write you should always strive to improve and accept criticism.
Altanta Barves
As a fan living in Atlanta, I appreciate the headline and the way it was written because it emphasizes how petty the Braves are for taking this to arbitration over $100,000. Yeah, sure, you “won” arbitration, but how does this make the organization look? Players coming up through the system — a system we’ve been told now for years will be good one day (maybe) — now know if they work hard, they’re going to be penny-pinched all the way to free agency.
In conclusion, “bravesfan” should be banned from commenting.

Foltys body language was enough for him to lose the arbitration. I hope this aspect of his craftimproves this year.

I made a comment on how bad the writing was in this article and my comment was deleted lol …

No it wasn’t

Folty will finish this season with an ERA over 5.

Since you can see the future can I get the lotto numbers?
Altanta Barves
Not so much “see the future” as just observing how his entire career has progressed (or, more to the point, has not progressed) and add the fact that he’s 26, I’d say he is what he’s already reached his ceiling. Sure, there are pitchers who become good later, like Arrieta, but he switched organizations and leagues. Folty is in the same surroundings and nothing has changed that would suddenly set him up for a breakout year.
Lotto numbers: 46-5-17-37-28; 50
RunDMC
Well, the numbers are deceiving because Folty has had ace stuff for stretches then let’s a few bad breaks snowball – thus comments about he gets rattled. If he can further developing his secondary pitches, he could be special. MLB experience and their coaches teach how to pitch, and some don’t get that until they have been knocked around realizing they can’t throw it hard enough to get it by some of the best hitters in the world.
Altanta Barves
The difference between good/great pitchers and Folty is that he’s not consistent and never has been. It comes down to command. He doesn’t have it. You don’t see it yet, but eventually you will — Folty is what he is. He has reached his ceiling.

I have been wondering if Cleveland would trade Francisco Mejia and Jose Ramirez for Ronald Acuna and either Nick Markakis or Brandon McCarthy?
Altanta Barves
You mean you were wondering if Atlanta could be suckered in to an awful trade?
