Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register has an interesting piece on Jered Weaver, the long-time Angels hurler who’s now enjoying retired life after an ill-fated stop with the Padres in 2017. The interview is well worth a read in its entirety, particularly for fans of the Halos or Weaver in particular. There is one notable bit of historical hot stove information regarding Weaver’s 2011 extension, which was widely viewed at the time as a relative bargain for the team. The 35-year-old says he got just what he wanted out of the deal, which was to sign a contract that bought out his remaining good years and allowed the organization to afford other improvements. “I would still have two more years left on my contract if I waited for free agency and signed a seven-year deal,” Weaver tells Fletcher. “There’s no way I could even pick up a ball and I’d be making like $30 million. I’m totally OK with where I’m at right now. I’m glad it unfolded the way it did. It all worked perfectly.”
Here are a few more notes from the AL West:
- The Athletics received promising news on third baseman Matt Chapman, as MLB.com’s Jane Lee reports. Chapman underwent an MRI after experiencing hand soreness, but fortunately no structural concerns were identified. He’ll continue to rest and receive a cortisone shot, but hopes are that the issue will soon be behind him. The 24-year-old only played half of the year at the MLB level in 2017 but turned in exciting results, with outstanding glovework and above-average hitting. His lofty strikeout totals remain a concern, but the A’s clearly believe Chapman can be a mainstay at the hot corner for years to come.
- Even as the A’s continue to try to develop a new core group of young players, the organization remains engaged in a complicated stadium building effort. Matier & Ross of the San Francisco Chronicle covered the latest developments recently, with club president Dave Kaval saying the team still hopes to line up a plan by the end of the year. The Athletics believed they were on track last fall before encountering a major roadblock. As the Chronicle report explains in full, another obstacle arose to a potential site at Oakland’s Howard Terminal — an option that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has endorsed (via the Chronicle’s John Shea) — with Kaval saying the possibility of building a new facility at the location of the O.co Coliseum is “probably now the front-runner,” at least in terms of timing and feasibility, though the organization still prefers to move downtown.
- Because the Rangers intend to utilize a six-man rotation, their bullpen plans are also changing, as Jeff Wilson of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram writes. Texas is going to ask for mutiple innings from multiple relievers, skipper Jeff Banister suggests. And some members of the rotation my pop out to the pen at times to fill in the gaps. It certainly seems to be shaping up to be an interesting experiment.

Chapman is so great with the glove that if the kid hits around league average he’ll be a fantastic asset for Oakland.
justin-turner overdrive
If he hits 35-40 homers a year he’ll be a perennial MVP candidate, especially if we all stop caring about K’s so much (both things could very well happen too).
thecoffinnail
Matt Bush as a full time starter is going to be worth keeping tabs on. I hope he transitions well and is given a sufficient amount of time to acclimate. He could very well turn into the Rangers version of Adam Warren. His arm has very low mileage (we all know why) and he won’t reach free agency for another 5 years. I hope he does well because the Rangers are going to need quite a few things to break right for them to contend with that staff this year.
downeysoft42
I really don’t think it will work. I could very well be wrong and sure I hope I am, would be good for him to turn his life completely around into a starter, but don’t turning relievers into starters usually not work?
Gripper
Ask Neftali Feliz how that worked out!
kh5681
Ha! Felix was a starter his entire minor league career. He only went to the pen when he got promoted. He was a starter that thrives in the bullpen, not the other way around.
Also, Kenny Rogers and CJ Wilson say hello. Worked out pretty well for those two Rangers.
kh5681
*Feliz (autocorrect)
Gripper
Feliz was a starter in the minors but never averaged 5 IP. As soon as they stretched him out he broke. In Kenny Rogers day, that was the typical process…. bring them up in the pen and transition them to starter.
xabial
Adam Warren is versatile, but he was always more valuable as a High leverage Relief pitcher.
Not every pitcher is Adam Warren. Some of them turn into Daniel Bard… his story is a Horror story, and makes me scared for converting successful Relief pitchers — like Bush, into Starters.
brucewayne
But wasn’t Bush a starter threw his whole career , including college ball ?
mstrchef13
No, he was a shortstop and a drug addict. Glad he got himself straightened out.
MZ311
Adam Warren isn’t a starter
charles stevens
I think it’s a terrible idea. He was a good high leverage reliever that relies solely on an upper 90’s 4 seam fastball. His off speed stuff is trash. A better move for a rebuilding club would be to keep him in the 8th or 9th and let his trade value peak. Then you can turn him into prospect gold in July.
justin-turner overdrive
I predict he won’t make the adjustment from relieving, he will overadjust to getting knocked around by throwing harder like he does as a reliever, and will blow his arm out.
Coal tender
He tires very easily, can’t expect much out of him as a starter.
Gripper
It won’t be long before Bannister is cut loose. He’ll be blamed for the the failures of Daniels disastrous leadership. Gonna be a long season for the boys in Arlington with a chump rotation. It’s a shame that Arlington taxpayers are getting stuck with the bill on the new stadium… $500 million new taxes (bonds)… not including a 10% tax on tickets and $3 tax for parking to help pay the Rangers part of the bill..
mmflaw
Always some cheap ass has to complain. The people who want to watch baseball….but don’t want to pay for it.
bravesfan88
Despite the six people that pushed the down arrow on your comment; for the most part, I have to somewhat agree.
Besides, no one in Texas SHOULD EVER complain about taxes!!! lol…From my understanding, Texans all have it ridiculously easy compared to several other states, when it comes to taxes…This is not meant as a personal response to Gripper, I’m just speaking in general to people that complain about prices…
Anyways, it is pretty simple, either pay to get in and watch the game, or simply watch the game at home…No one wants to hear people complaining about prices…We all have to pay ridiculous parking prices, hefty prices for good seats, and insane prices for food and drinks at our own local parks!! WE ALL DO!!
Not to mention, majority of taxpayers get the raw end of the deal, when their local team gets a new ballpark..It is what it is, no use in complaining…
3rdStrikeLooking
Fail.
Gripper
Do you live in Texas? Yes, on the cover, there is no state income taxes. But like all states, (and I’ve lived in IL, FL, VA, MD, PA, MS, TX), they all get your money. Texas property taxes are extremely high…which makes up for the savings on no state income tax. Taxpayers footing the bill for a multi-BILLION dollar business is beyond foolish. We wonder why roads, bridges, sewage systems and water systems are all old and failing? Just think what $500 million + could do in Arlington.
Coal tender
The $billions of dollars spent in sports is just beyond ridiculous. Getting taxpayers to pay for stadiums as have happened in Arlington with Jerry Jones “ripoff” and now the Texas Ranger’s stage coach robbers in Davis & Simpson goes one step further. Fans are now stuck with two “has been” franchises.
RyanR
Shhh…we don’t need anymore people moving here.
Breezy
It’ll definitely be a tough span of years, but most Ranger fans could see the writing on the wall that a full/partial rebuild was in the near future. They made their last ditch push for contention in 2015/16 with all the trades they made, just didn’t work out. It happens.

Coal tender
I think you mean “This?” Not a good afternoon for this bunch.
Daniel Youngblood
I’d be fine with a rebuild if the Rangers would actually commit to one. But the front office wants to have its cake and eat it too. If the plan was to tank the 2018 season, and it’s clear from the pitching staff they’ve built that it is, then they should have had the guts to trade Beltre, Hamels, Choo (salary dump) and possibly even Andrus and reload for their next competitive window. Instead, they’re trying to pretend to compete in an effort to avoid — or at least mitigate — the financial losses that inevitably come with a rebuild.
If you’re going to be bad, do so with an eye on the future. The Rangers are going to suck in 2018 and will have done nothing to improve their standing in the near future. As a fan, that’s very frustrating. If you’re going to compete, compete. Go get a real starter, a real bullpen arm and try to challenge for one of the wild card spots. And if you’re not, then trade off your aging assets, shed payroll and put yourself in a better position to compete down the road.
But this half in, half out nonsense sucks and has served to effectively kill any momentum this franchise might have built with its success the past decade.
ab3b29
Totally agree Youngblood
Coal tender
They certainly showed today that they are giving every indication of proving you are right. This is going to be a bad team embarrassing themselves in the process. Nobody’s job is safe in this organization.
Gripper
Andrus may be gone if he has a decent season and opts out if there is a market for SS. Just needs to beat 5/$73M. Hamels may be harder to move, I think his stretch or 200 IP seasons are over and @$22.5M will get little in return. Choo ….good luck finding a home… They could have hit the jackpot on a Profar trade but Daniels sat on him like ENRON stock until his value was negative.
RyanR
It will be nice to see some of the younger guys get a real shot this year. I’m excited to see how it goes.
Daniel Youngblood
If Matt Kemp and Melvin Upton could be traded twice, Choo could be moved with enough cash kicked in. And that’s true of Beltre and Hamels too. When the alternative is paying their entire salary on a 72-win team, shedding half of that total and getting back whatever prospects you can is a net gain.
ab3b29
Gripper you won’t be complaining when you’re sitting in your seat enjoying your Dr. Pepper in the 72 degree temps instead of the sun and south wind throwing down the 100 degree temps now will you? Or do you even go to games?
Kayrall
“enjoying”
“your Dr. Pepper”
Pick one
Gripper
And they don’t serve “real” Dr. Pepper at the park. Drive down to Dublin to get the real deal. now known as “Dublin Original”.
Gripper
I’ve survived plenty of those warm games since my first one in 97. Dozens…with a 5 hr drive. I fact I’m at Spring Training this week for the 5th year in a row. Does your boyfriend take you to the games?
Coal tender
Today’s first game “out of the gates” bodes badly for this AAA caliber ball club. A mish mash of some youth a lot of age averages out to some thing mediocre. Daniels is only taking orders from the two owners Davis & Simpson who want to spend less on this club.
Steven Kennedy
Daniels is taking orders because he caused a mess of a situation w the club. There was zero reason to sign and overpay for Choo at the time. At the time I was ok w/o the Kinsler trade but after apparently not requiring Fielder to take a physical to complete the trade was plain dumb. Lastly ravaging the farm system for average arms has hurt the club.
Daniel Youngblood
I agree completely. And I was staunchly opposed to both moves, which I viewed as window-closers and a stark contrast from the sustainable winning model JD had employed to get the team to its two World Series appearances.
Draven_X_23
Texas’ pitching plan sounds like a bad idea. More innings for RPs and less for SPs does not sound like a winning idea. But I grew up with Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz going 7 or 8 innings at least.
bravesfan88
Ohhh man, the good ole days…Also, don’t forget about Steve Avery, the poor guy always gets left out..lol..In his own right, he was a pretty solid starter..He just wasn’t nearly as good as three of the game’s most dominant starters to ever toe a ML rubber…
Good lord, watching Maddux was just a work of art. Maddux’s teammates talk and tell stories about him like people tell stories about Chuck Norris…lol Personally, I’ve never seen someone dissect the art of pitching like Maddux EVER!! In my opinion, in terms of overall skill set, Maddux was the best pitcher I have ever seen..Given, I’ve only been a baseball fan for 30 years, even still, there probably was only a handful or so pitchers on par with the Professor’s abilities, before my time…
NO ONE has ever made hitters look so ridiculous from a low 90’s fastball…Not to mention, Maddux and Glavine dominated, even during the infamous “steroid era.” Most fans and historians only consider the hitters, and how they affected the game, during the steroid era…BUT how about those two pitchers being able to make any and ALL hitters look simply foolish!!
Well, except for whatever reason, Glavine ALWAYS struggled against opposing team’s backup catchers!! /: ..Beyond ridiculous, but very true..lol
Gripper
You left out part of why they were so successful…. strike zones a foot outside the plate on both sides. Yes, great pitchers but there was some help..
brucewayne
I agree about Maddux , but I also enjoyed Nolan Ryan
brucewayne
and Bob Gibson
brucewayne
throwing the heat as well !
baines03
Bannister’s logic doesn’t make sense. If you have more starters, they should be able to go deeper into games, not less… needing relievers to go multiple innings is unnecessary.
wiggysf
More starters on the 25-man = less relievers on the 25-man.
txphi_991
More innings on the season, not a game. More on the season, as there are less arms in the pen
SirPartyAnimal
that’s exactly why Weaver is the man! that article was a great read
CowboysoldierFTW
Sadly it doesn’t seem like that the A’s will ever get a new ballpark.
justin-turner overdrive
“We will get a resolution on this in 3 years.” – 2009. 10 years ago almost.
From 2006 to 2018 A’s fans have had to deal with their lying front office, year after year. 100% finger pointing and blame and no one actually breaking ground. An infuriating franchise to follow sometimes.
tgovey
That Weaver article was a good read
cakirby
Weav is, and was, a class act. One of those guys you just don’t want to see fall off like he did at the end there. Who else in baseball can say what he did in this article regarding his contract?
justin-turner overdrive
I love how Weaver is currently battling with Dan Haren for most self-deprecating MLB player on twitter.
camdenyards46
Wait to get a park downtown
yoyo137
Jered Weaver is the pitcher we needed but didn’t deserve.
Tiger_diesel92
Did anyone forget about Chris sale? The guy came up in the bullpen , great set up man and closer then went into the rotation and continues his dominance. You don’t get that many guys like that.
