We’ve covered a whole lot of arbitration deals today, many of them reached before today’s deadline to exchange filing figures. Some other agreements have come together after team and player submitted their numbers. It’s still possible, of course, that these situations will be resolved before an arbitration hearing becomes necessary. (At this point, we seem to lack full clarity on teams’ approaches to negotiations after the filing deadline. And most organizations make exceptions for multi-year deals even if they have a file-and-trial stance.)
Some situations could even be dealt with in short order. As things stand, though, these unresolved arbitration cases could turn into significant hearings. (As always, MLBTR’s 2018 arbitration projections can be found here; you will also want to reference MLBTR’s 2018 arbitration tracker.)

Red Sox pay that man
calibearwaltzer
Some of these are really funny. You can’t settle a $100k difference?
velorum
I’d certainly love to have that $100K
NL_East_Rivalry
The numbers they are going to trial with aren’t the numbers they were asking. They are the realistic numbers they think they can win. The numbers being argued were of a larger margin
ilikebaseball 2
Huh? Yes, these are exactly the numbers they are going to trial with, its how the system works. And yes the difference on some of them is 100k and those teams are file and trial and why the small differences are there and not worked out. But the numbers you see are the numbers in play. There are no other numbers!
oogadebob
Not true, it’s a common practice among both teams and players to converse regarding the salaries with certain numbers in mind…. Then when it is time to file numbers for arbitration both sides file for different numbers closer to the median so that there is a better shot the arbitrator sides with them…
So if a team already has moved the number $250k another $100k isn’t trivial, especially when it is not the players last trip through arbitration and it will be compounded regarding the subsequent seasons salaries starting with a higher base.
Cardinals17
What’s a hundred grand to the owners???? They really must want to hack him off!!!
ilikebaseball 2
No the numbers above are what the arbiter will decided between in the case should it go to arbitration, its why they are posting those numbers,. Its why there is a little thing called a DEADLINE.
Troutmagnet
Not only that, but aren’t there lawyer’s feed associated with this process? You’ll probably pay $50k to $70k just to argue it out for a week and then draw up the agreements.
101reklaw
NL_East_Rivalry:
There are two (2) numbers, asking & offering. The only “realistic” number is what they actually get.
ilikebaseball 2
Those are from File and Trial teams.
southi
I know that in Foltynewicz’s case he will go to arbitration four times (possibly at least). This is his first time through so that $100,000 difference is sort of a multiplier. If he wins then each of the next three trips through arbitration will build on that number.
SoCalBrave
I’m willing to bet the Braves will either sign Folty to a 2 or 4 year deal with options, or trade him.
SoCalBrave
100k this year can mean 500k on next year, 1.5 million the year after 4 million on the last year.
mrnatewalter
It’s silly. I mean, I get that an extra 100K is an extra 100K. These guys want to maximize on their earning potential, but at the same time, is it worth it?
Jeremy Affeldt, in his book, wrote about how awful the arbitration process is. How teams will try to portray you as untalented and worthless. He said that the Royals’ team lawyer actually said “the reason more fans don’t come to games in Kansas City to watch the Royals play is that they can’t stand to watch you pitch.”
I mean, is all that worth what you’d pay some 25th roster guy to play through the month of June?
argenys h.
Thank Kendall Graveman number can’t be right.
eduardoaraisa98
The man doesn’t want that much money
ralph 3
Grendal Kaveman!
velorum
“Graveman filed at $2.6MM, Oakland countered at $5.3MM” what?
erauber
I’m guessing flip flop it…
bluegorilla
Strailey’s number is lower than the Marlins’ as well.
bradenbaseball18
Click on the twitter link to see the real numbers; Jeff made a typo, that’s all.
Solaris601
Same goes for Dan Straily and Miami who offered him more than he was asking, and they couldn’t settle?
niedenfuer92
So Dan Straily won’t take more than what he filed? Lol
ef1t
“i know what I’m worth.”
timyanks
straily asked for less than team offered. still unsigned?
bernbabybern
Heh, a couple of these are illogical.
natsgm
Graveman drives a hard bargain
TwinsHomer
Miami fighting Straily over 20k? What the…
timyanks
no fighting, just take my money
MB923
The difference is 180k. Not 20k
TwinsHomer
Pretty sure at a point yesterday it said 3.57 – 3.55
rtr5953
Graveman and Straily should have accepted the overpay lol
Michael Chaney
It was clearly a typo
ASapsFables
Avisail Garcia and the White Sox will most certainly settle their arbitration case. It has been a long time (2001) since the club has had an arbiter decide a salary. The gap isn’t very wide and I’d be shocked if the dispute drags on much further. Of course, the possibility remains that Garcia could still be dealt before any hearing since he is one of the few remaining short term veterans who possess any real trade value with the rebuilding White Sox.
rtr5953
A’s offered Graveman 2.36
Mia offered Straily 3.37
Jeff Todd
Thanks, fixed.
Eric 32
Jose Iglesias is asking a bit much for a guy who put up a .650 OPS over the past two seasons.
Hiro
His argument has to be his prestigious defence then.
Michael Chaney
True, but defense doesn’t pay much in arbitration. Counting stats do.
rememberthecoop
Defense doesn’t pay much. But defence does.
infractor
You realize it’s spelled both ways, right?
Eric 32
There are other good defensive shortstops that can hit a little, I don’t think Iglesias’ defense is that great that you’d ignore his other shortcomings.
NicTaylor
Please Redsox, don’t piss of Betts like you did Lester. Offer him a decent pay with incentive to sign long term. Done eff this one up
card collector18
Straily filed at $3.55MM, Miami countered at $3.57MM
LOL come on now
Jeff Todd
Yes, there was a typo.
gojirasreign
LoL imagine the look on the agents faces of Straily and Graveman when they said “NO DAMMIT I SAID I WANT LESS THAT THAT!!!” Classic hehe
realgone2
Hah. Shelby miller…….
disgruntledreader 2
Brad Hand is a pretty notable name who didn’t settle, but isn’t included here.
Michael Chaney
I know some of these teams are file and trial, and I know that arbitration salaries DO serve as baselines and increase exponentially over multiple years…but the difference in some of these is just ridiculous. You mean to tell me that the Braves and Folty are going to risk a hearing and all that goes with it over (what’s now) $100,000?
kherz23
$100,000 is a lot of money, Michael
SoCalBrave
100k on his first arbitration can turn into millions on his last. I think they’re going to sign him long term before the arbitration hearing
sufferforsnakes
Tribe gives Danny “Mr Inconsistent” Salazar $5 million, but only offer Bauer $5.3 million?
Now that’s dumb.
Paul Heyman
Where’s the lamb sauce?
Ski to Coors
Breaking news, Marlins front office is cheap.
jd396
I don’t think some people quite get that the arbitration numbers aren’t necessarily reflective of the negotiations that go on between the team and the player to attempt to avoid arbitration.
coldgoldenfalstaff
Yeah often when the numbers are so close, there’s enough wiggle room to settle before the hearing.
socalbaseballdude
Why are the Red Sox all of a sudden trying to lowball Betts? This guy has 55 HR’s, 88 doubles and 215 RBI’s the last two years!!! This is a critical, strategical error. Whatever he signs for this year won’t matter. He’ll sign elsewhere when he hits free agency. Bad karma BoSox!
B-Strong
I don’t see Mookie winning this. I also see him turning sour grapes after this and walking from Boston when he hits free agency which is unfortunate as he would likely be the new face of the team by then with Pedy likely being close to wrapping his career if he keeps getting injured.
soxfan1
Agree completely B-Strong. I’m on the teams side here. Go public multiple times about how you will not sign long term and the team is not going to do you any favors. MLBTR projected him at 8.2 and Boston offered 7.5 while he requested 10.5. He’s not going to win that. Should have filed (and hopefully they will just settle) at 9 M.
