The Mariners announced that they’ve claimed right-handed reliever Chasen Bradford off waivers from the Mets, who had designated him for assignment yesterday. Seattle’s 40-man roster is now full.
The 28-year-old Bradford reached the Majors for the first time this past season and racked up a fair amount of time in the Mets’ bullpen. Bradford appeared in 28 games with New York and tallied 33 2/3 innings of work. In that time, the former 35th-round pick posted a solid 3.74 ERA with 7.2 K/9, 3.5 BB/9, 0.8 HR/9 and a hefty 55.9 percent ground-ball rate.
Bradford averaged just 90.6 mph on his fastball in that rookie season, but he has a history of limiting walks (1.6 BB/9 in parts of four Triple-A seasons) and has routinely turned in ground-ball rates north of 50 percent in the minor leagues. He also has multiple minor league options remaining, so the Mariners will be able to shuttle him back and forth between Seattle and Tacoma throughout the year, if needed.

Why lose him when we finally could have lost Reynolds. Ughh
bigjonliljon
The missing piece to get to playoffs.
wrigleywannabe
Because getting him prevents it, right?
SimplyAmazin91
He actually was decent and would liked him to have stuck around. Guys like Robles and Reynolds should, but I still think they are holding out hope for Robles to bounce back and they like Reynolds versatility. He cannot hit though!

Woo-hoo… a 28-year-old career minor league reliever (7 seasons) with a low strikeout rate and a high contact rate. Just what the M’s needed. That 40-man roster spot certainly is much better spent on this guy than on… oh, I don’t know… a STARTING PITCHER!!! Seriously, someone needs to sit Dipoto down and teach him what DEPTH really is. The Houston Astros have starting pitching depth. The NY Mets have starting pitching depth. The Seattle Mariners have 2 guys who have been a bit injury prone the last few years at the top of the rotation, a solid #3 in Leake, a half-year contributor in Erasmo, another half-year contributor in Miranda, and a bunch of AAA dreck. That is NOT starting pitching depth in the slightest. The offense will probably be fine, but trading away Pagan and Vieira will hurt badly when the pen is once again overused due to a rotation that isn’t sea-worthy (see what I did there?) Grrrrrrrr……
Ichiro51
because you know so much more about depth than the GM of Seattle.
zoinksscoob
Given what he’s done over the past 3 years, I actually wouldn’t be surprised if I do,
wrigleywannabe
this does nothing to prevent any other move

Maybe, but dipoto hasn’t proven he can acquire it adequately. He has burned the farm system to turn us into a borderline contender.
Kslaw
So your knock on the Mariners staff is two guys that are injury prone yet your argument is the Mets have depth? Have you payed attention to baseball the last few years. The Mets pitching lives on the DL.
#Fantasygeekland
Just bc they get hurt more doesn’t mean they don’t have depth it just means they have to use the depth more.

Someone needs to escape his or her 1990s mindset and realize that the distinction between starters and relievers has become increasingly blurred.
Every pitcher should be prepared to go through the opponent’s lineup once but at most twice.

“dreck” is a good word

There goes the last 40-man spot. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with the #5 rotation spot.
Marco has no options so if he can’t handle rotation duties, we have a huge, huge amount of bullpen depth and still a fat ? On the rotation.
Here’s to a healthy rotation!!

Brother of Chad?

I’ve watched Bradford since he was drafted. Basically, this was a waste of time by the Mariners. Not sure what theyre thinking.. Bradford was just a stop gap roster move because of the amount of injuries the Mets had.
MrMet62
One very positive thing about him: he throws strikes!
wrigleywannabe
as is your comment, but, hey…yoy watched him, so you know more than they do
