Phillies closer Hector Neris has changed his representation and is now a client of Octagon, FanRag Sports’ Robert Murray tweets. Neris joins Carlos Santana, Cesar Hernandez, and Cameron Rupp as notable Phillies players under the Octagon banner.
After a breakout 2016 season, it was seen as just a matter of time before Neris was eventually given the ninth-inning job in Philadelphia. The team began the year with Jeanmar Gomez and Joaquin Benoit getting the bulk of save chances, but Neris eventually shifted into the closer role and, after some early struggles, looked dominant down the stretch. Over his last 42 appearances (43 1/3 IP), Neris posted a 2.49 ERA and 52 strikeouts against just 15 walks. Overall, Neris had a 3.01 ERA, 10.37 K/9 and 3.31 K/BB rate over 80 1/3 innings, saving 26 of 29 chances and missing a lot of bats (16.4% swinging strike rate) thanks to a notoriously tough splitter.
Neris turns 29 in June but he still offers four years of team control for the Phils, and isn’t arbitration-eligible until next winter. Saves are one of the traditional counting stats that play a big role in arbitration numbers, so Neris is in line for a pretty nice payday next offseason and in his two other arb years if he retains his hold on the closer’s job.
Neris’ switch in representation has been noted in MLBTR’s Agency Database, which contains agent information on more than 2,500 Major League and Minor League players. If you come across any errors or omissions in the database, let us know via email: mlbtrdatabase@gmail.com.

He only gets in trouble when he doesn’t throw the splitter.

Sleeper in fantasy baseball!?
bastros88
most definitely, very solid late inning arm. Still young, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see him continue to build off of his pitchc repertoire.

Wow this is so interesting. I really wanted to know about hector neris switching agencies.
bastros88
The slow Hot stove doesn’t just slow down for you, it slows down for everyone. This post is interesting because it says that his agent also covers other Phillies players, so that could be important down the road, who knows.
thegreatcerealfamine
How exactly are these articles interesting and why would it be important to know who an agent is representing?
Brixton
Because different agents address their players differently.
thegreatcerealfamine
Thanks..finally some perspective. Most of these articles are just some info but people always complain about the former agent not being mentioned..which doesn’t matter unless the story explains why they severed the relationship…
kbarr888
If serving no other purpose……and as mntfan mentions above…..
This article brings a “not-so-popular” closer into the light, as a sleeper pick, for Fantasy Baseball managers. Yes, some will scoff at the FBB aspect, but if you haven’t been involved in it, you’re missing out. It’s a great way to stay plugged into Baseball over the course of the season. It’s competition, and it’s fun. Nothing like a late-round sleeper pick like Neris to make other managers say things to you like….
“Hey…..How Did You….?”. LOL
Cat Mando
Brixton…Agreed….Recent case in point Felipe Rivero. Dec. 2nd he dropped Boras, Dec 9th he said he wanted to sign an extension and he dropped Boras at his sister’s advice and Jan. 18th he signed an extension.

Yeah, maybe Hector wants an extension, and is willing to give up some upside for security. IIRC he did have a child a couple of years ago, so maybe the security is more important now.
BlueJayFan1515
If you feel that way, why did you bother reading the article?
E munchy
Hahaha exactly
rays3269
Nobody is forcing you to read it. There isn’t anything really interesting going on in baseball news therefore you get relatively uninteresting content when it comes to baseball.
Kayrall
Who was his previous agent? (since MLBTR explicitly omits that information every agency change post)
Cat Mando
Do you see that info in the tweet referenced and linked? Any announcement from the player or former agency anywhere on the web?
Weirdest obsession I have ever seen.

Some of us hate Fake News. We want to know what’s going on. That’s how democracy works, an informed citizenry participating in the running of their country. Dictatorships discourage this kind of common knowledge and encourage the public to follow the lives of celebrities.
kbarr888
This conversation (if you are talking politics) doesn’t really belong here, but to set the record straight……
When created, the USA was NOT set up as a Democracy.
We are a Constitutional Republic. There’s a difference and it’s foundational.
Check it out.
Cat Mando
How is it fake oh wise one. Octagon has a page that lists their clients…many agencies don’t. Unless that info is released by the agency or player it is not public knowledge nor does anyone have a right to it.
MLBTR has stated in the past that the info on the Agency data base is based only on releases and may not always be up to date. Can you or anyone other than the former agent or player say for certain who that agent was?
“Dictatorships”? Really?

The House of representatives was to have one representative for every 30,000 citizens.
With no input from the citizens the House has been transformed into a very undemocratic junior Senate.
Google that first paragraph and learn something, son.
kbarr888
Son?…………LMAO
I think you need to lay off the crack pipe……..

Apportionment Act of 1911….Google it.
kbarr888
Familiar with it.
It set the number of Reps at 435, and described how that number was determined. It’s a nuts-and-bolts explanation of the calculation process.
Could you please show me where it addresses anything to do with dictatorships, changes in citizen participation, or where it removes the responsibility of those Reps to “represent their district”….???
My comment was that we are NOT a Democracy now, we weren’t Founded as a Democracy, and we have different rules than a True/Pure Democracy. Do you disagree with that?
Caseys Partner
Your response shows you are not in anyway familiar with what I told you to Google. You’re 100% ignorant and determined to stay that way.
Cat Mando
Your response shows a lack of historical knowledge and the various Apportionment Acts legally adjusting the #’s (under Article 1 Section 4) and how representative government works.
The idiocy of believing that we should maintain 1/30,000 leaving us with a house of 10,000+ is mind boggling. Times change and laws change with circumstances, just like the law in LA changed to stop people from stuffing racist literature in grocery store boxes.

The Phillies will probably let Neris run up saves so he’ll be expensive. Anything to waste payroll space.
The only thing I’ve thought about in regard to the Phillies for the last couple of months is: How do they get rid of Santana’s contract?

“The only thing I’ve thought about in regard to the Phillies for the last couple of months is: How do they get rid of Santana’s contract?”
Why?
Jimcarlo Slaton
Overpay for a 32 year old by a team that is unlikely to contend this year… He’s not a positional fit or need.
Cat Mando
A short term salary that does not hurt the team in any way for a productive player as insurance in case Franco’s sophomore slump was the norm and not a fluke and against possible growing pains for Hoskins.
A team that is turning the corner from full rebuild always has a need for veteran production and clubhouse presence. His presence does not impeded the club or players in any way. Hoskins’s bat did not suffer playing LF and he has already expressed willingness to play anywhere and hit anywhere.
If the Phillies were tight against the luxury tax or signed Santana to 7/140 I would agree, otherwise it does not hamper them at all.

Somehow, I think that surprises no one.
