The Brewers announced that they’ve designated catcher Andrew Susac for assignment today in order to clear a spot on the roster for righty Matt Albers, whose previously reported two-year deal with the team is now official.
Susac, 27, was once one of baseball’s very best overall prospects, ranking in the Top 100 on multiple lists prior to the 2015 campaign and frequently appearing on the Giants’ organizational rankings. He went to Milwaukee in a 2016 swap that sent lefty Will Smith to San Francisco, though, and has struggled in both organizations over the past couple of seasons.
In 274 MLB plate appearances, Susac has batted just .232/.299/.396 with an alarming 82 strikeouts against 23 walks. He’s been more effective in his Triple-A career, hitting at a .247/.338/.425 clip, and strikeouts haven’t been nearly as much of an issue for him there. Durability, on the other hand, has been a major factor for the former second-rounder (Giants, 2011); Susac has appeared in more than 100 games just twice in a season, and he’s totaled just 142 games over the past two seasons combined. In his young career, Susac has already dealt with wrist, trapezius, finger and shoulder injuries on separate occasions.
With Manny Pina, Stephen Vogt and Jett Bandy all on the 40-man roster, the Brewers seemingly feel set on catching depth. It’s possible that Susac clears waivers and remains in the organization, though he does have a minor league option remaining, so he could hold appeal to another organization that is thin at the position.
Giants will bring him back on a minors deal. You can take that to the bank.
I’d actually like that. Depth at a position we need more of, unlike Blanco.
just as Micheal responded I am amazed that any body able to get paid $4334 in 4 weeks on the internet

Of course they will
Yup, just like Blanco and Hector Sanchez. This is the offseason for returning to your former team. Chase Headley goes back to SD, Jay Bruce goes back to NYM, Lorenzo Cain back to MIL, Tyson Ross and Chris Young back to SD, Giants have top waiver priority, bet your bank account that they claim him.
Yo back to the Crew too
This trend will continue with Darvish going to the Rangers, Alex Avila to the Tigers, Logan Morrison to the Marlins, Eduardo Nunez to the Yankees, and Jake Arrieta to the O’s (lol jk)
You forgot the best player to return home Matt Kemp. Best player in their original stint with the club that is
Yeah I totally spoofed, and Brandon Moss back to the A’s. A lot of homecomings this offseason.
@solaris601 he was designated for assignment and the Giants have first waiver priority since he was designated by an NL club. So they can’t get him on a minors deal, they would have to give him a 40 man spot. Only way the could have signed him to a minors deal is if he was released by MIL. If the Giants don’t claim him I could see the Padres snagging him to be Hedges back up. All they have is a bunch of non-roster invitee’s behind him on the depth chart.
They got two on the 40 man behind hedges
Torres isn’t ready to back up and the other dude meh
Yes. I’m sure he wants to be trapped behind Buster Posey again
Trapped? He couldn’t even make it out form behind Manny Pina, Jett Bandy, and eventually Steven Vogt last year. I think he’d be happy just making an Opening Day roster somewhere no matter who he was “trapped” behind.
“I’m gonna take you to the bank, Senator Trent…”
Doubt it he’s 27
They can’t just bring him back on a minor league deal… it doesn’t work like that… they can claim him and option him back to AAA, but they can’t just “bring him back on a minors deal”
Yankees? He seems like an obvious upgrade over Austin Romine.
Not sure his career .232/.299/..326 line for a guy thought of to be an offensive first catcher is an obvious upgrade over anyone, but if there is 1 Romine may be it.
Exactly. Sad but true.
But hasn’t he spent most of his time as a backup catcher? That slash line isn’t all that terrible for someone who maybe starts every 5th start. From memory when he was playing regularly with SF he wasn’t all that bad. After/If he clears waivers I think he’d make a good depth piece for SF.
His most regular playing time came in 2015 when he slashed .218/.297/.368 while only throwing out 17% of runners. 2014 with some decent playing time every 3-4 days late in the season he did slash .273/.326/.466, so there is still some promise, but his swing and miss rate has always been super high.
Yea sure he is
Remember when Giants fans freaked out for giving him and Bickford up for Smith? Good times.
I still don’t like that they gave up bickford – but I guess this year we will hopefully see smith do something and I’ll feel better about it
Braves
Barves are more than fine at catcher.
Is it still too soon to say both teams lost that trade?
Yes because Smith can contribute this year.
And Bickford still has some upside if he can avoid suspension
The Cubs are looking for backup catchers. I could see a Cubs-Brewers trade. Something like Susac as the centerpiece plus Yelich, some pitchers and the Cubs give them Jason Heyward. Fair trade?
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
oof…
You tried so hard to sneak that in
Theo Epstein calls me: “You’re hired as our new assistant GM”
maybe if they threw in baez and bryant and I don’t know lester maybe?
Is he out of options? He definitely burned option years in 2016 and 2017 but idk about 2015.
Right in the article it says he has one option remaining.
They put that in after I posted my comment
Padres (over Rocky Gale) seem like the most logical choice but the Giants do have a tendency to value guys they are familiar with which is why then to extend their players more than most teams.
Agree 100%. I would be highly surprised if he is playing for someone other than San Francisco due to familiarity or San Diego due to lack of depth behind Hedges.
Even if the Brewers get an ace or a #2 SP, the fact that no one in management appears to be in on a REAL catcher, is gonna bite them in the beehind, probably at the worst possible time. Pina? Vogt? Bandy? Who are we? The Padres?
Last season as a platoon the Brewers Catchers ended up #14 in Avg, 15 in HR, 13 in hits and #5 in 2B. Pina hit .279 and the stretch that he was out of the lineup hurt those overall stats or they could have been higher. Vogt only hit .254 after coming over, but slugged .508. Who exactly is available for them that is going to put up numbers better than that? I agree an upgrade would be nice, but they can’t just pluck one out of nowhere. Not a lot of “real” catchers available out there outside of Realmuto, and that’s not happening.
Reds should claim him (with the intent of optioning him to AAA if Mesoraco is healthy), and DFA Stuart Turner.
Mesoraco and healthy rarely appear in the same sentence. Reds better load up on the minor league signees sooner than later.
Marlins should pick him up and trade Realmuto. Cash in when the value is high…
Pittsburgh Pirates would be wise to pick him up.
