The A’s announced on Wednesday that they’ve agreed to a one-year deal with outfielder/designated hitter Khris Davis, thus avoiding arbitration. Terms of the contract weren’t announced, but FanRag’s Jon Heyman reports that Davis, an Octagon client, agreed to a $10.5MM salary for the 2018 season (Twitter link). The slugger had a projected arbitration salary of $11.1MM, per MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz.
The 30-year-old Davis just wrapped up his second consecutive season of 40-plus homers, belting 43 round-trippers and hitting .247/.326/.528 with 91 runs scored and 110 RBIs on the season overall. Those gaudy counting stats should position him nicely for a pay raise in what will be his second trip through the arbitration process. Davis will be arb-eligible once more next offseason before reaching free agency upon completion of the 2019 season.
Oakland has now avoided arbitration with both Davis and Jake Smolinski, leaving them with six unresolved cases, as can be seen in MLBTR’s Arbitration Tracker. Marcus Semien, Kendall Graveman, Chris Hatcher, Liam Hendriks, Josh Phegley and Blake Treinen are all still eligible for arbitration. The deadline to exchange figures looms this Friday evening.

He should head to Coors when he’s a FA.

Over/under on home runs 500

He’d definitely take a run at 60+ every year at Coors. Shame he’s one of the worst defenders in baseball, but also, all the more reason to get the DH in the NL, or move the Rockies to the AL – we, the fans, need to see a DH at Coors!

Completely agree that the NL needs to adopt the DH

Too late of a start in his career IMO…

Reggie Jackson said once to Tony Armas “don’t pay much attention to how often you strike out or if you miss a ball out there. Just hit them out, that is what the like”… KD has improved lots…

He’s actually serviceable at getting to fly balls though he looks awkward going back and to his left. The main problem is he had shoulder surgery at a young age, and can’t throw. He’d be acceptable in Fenway.

He has two more years on control. Should the A’s trade him or give him an extension contract?
madmc44
I’ve said it before trade him to the Red Sox for Pomerantz or ERod. OR
Expand the trade to include JBJ then sign JDM and you will have as potent a lineup as the Yankees.
Betts RF, Bene CF, JDM LF, Moreland/Hanley 1B, Devers 3 B, Davis DH, Xander SS,Hernandez/ Pedroia/ Holt 2 B, Vaz/ Leon C.

How willing are you to sacrifice defense? Not even just looking at JBJ loss, but you’re putting Bene in CF who is worse than JBJ. JDM and Davis are just awful at defense so throwing either in LF is a terrible idea (Davis might be better but who really cares when they’re that bad). If one is put at DH. Moreland is better defensively than Hanley, but Hanley is far more expensive, are you willing to sit that?

I look at Davis as more of a trade candidate at the trade deadline for the Red Sox.
There is no reason to panic right now. The Red Sox are looking to add JDM and if they can’t just shore up a few holes and see if your pitching holds up.
If the Red Sox aren’t vastly improved offensively over last year then you look at the trade deadline to see if it makes sense to add someone like Davis. No need to panic now and no need to get crazy with JDM. He is a DH in the Red Sox 5/125 is the absolute highest they should go for a DH type. I think that is too high as well but he would bring thunder to the middle of the lineup that boy can hit.
