10:51am: A deal is “imminent,” Jon Morosi of MLB Network tweets.
10:29am: Whitley is likely to be considered “untouchable” by the ’Stros, per Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (via Twitter), though it seems the two young outfielders could still be in play in discussions.
10:17am: The Astros and Pirates appear to be “picking up steam” in talks involving Pittsburgh righty Gerrit Cole, MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez reports. Negotiations on Cole were reported recently, as Astros owner Jim Crane has made clear his organization is interested in adding a major starter.
Cole, 27, has long been seen as a front-line power starter, though he has had some stumbles in the past two seasons. While he topped two hundred innings and threw as hard as ever in 2017, he only managed a 4.26 ERA.
As always, contract rights are a key component of value. Cole is controllable for two more seasons via arbitration. MLBTR’s arbitration projections suggest he could earn $7.5MM for the 2018 season after a $3.75MM salary in 2017.
It remains unclear just what kind of trade package would suffice to pry Cole free from the Bucs, who originally selected him with the first overall pick of the 2011 draft. Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan has suggested (Twitter link) that Pittsburgh is holding out for a headliner such as outfielder Kyle Tucker or righty Forrest Whitley, while the ’Stros are understandably hoping to hold on to their two top-rated prospects. The sides are also said to have discussed young outfielder Derek Fisher.
Also of note is the fact that, per Sanchez, Cole “was Houston’s top target last summer” when the organization was searching to bolster its rotation. It seems the prior interests has carried into the offseason. Of course, other organizations may also still be involved. At one point, the Yankees were said to be gaining momentum toward a deal for Cole, though that chatter evidently cooled down. Other organizations surely also have interest in the righty.
bronxbombers
Thank god he’s not going to Yankees
DVail1979
That’s not 100% sure yet
CubsFanForLife
Yes, thank goodness. The Yankees are good enough as it is, we don’t want them getting better
MB923
With the year he had last year, it’s no guarantee he would have been a good fit in the Bronx. Every Yankee SP last year had a better ERA and ERA+ than Cole except Tanaka, who actually had a good 2nd half and was one of the very few SP last year in the postseason who did excellent
mattgarcia2324
I agree. Definitely not worth giving up frazier and others for
BSPORT
Agree, if a 4.26 era is a front line starter then the CC signing was amazing for Cashman. Think he was under 4 era last year and gave nothing up to acquire.
BSPORT
Cashman should see what it would take to get Nova back.
tenman85
Pirates will be making out like bandits if they can somehow get Whitley or Tucker in this deal.
tenman85
Deal supposedly “imminent” now according to Morosi. Finally, some hot stove action!
mlb1225
So are we rebuilding or not?
herecomethephillies2018
You guys are rebuilding AND contending, remember? Lol poor Pirates fans, it’s not going to be as long of a drought as last time, but you guys are in for some rough years.
mlb1225
All because our owner is too cheap, our FO won’t spend any money at all, and staying in the middle of rebuilding and contending leads to mediocrity.
BSPORT
Cutch will be next
Pingleja
I think a deal for Fisher and Moran could get it done. I think the Pirates like players of that caliber/upside, plus they’ll be cheap MLB ready options for 6+ years
sngehl01
Astros fan here, and there’s no way that’s enough. Those are 2 B-type prospects.
I would surmise that they can get a deal done without Tucker or Whitley, but it’s not going to be for Fisher and Moran. It would still take 2 guys of names like Bakauskas, Reed, Martes, Musgrove, Paulino, Alvarez.
Something along those lines.
I don’t envision Houston moving Tucker or Whitley when they were off limits for other starters. I do think if they were available it would be in a deal for Archer, not Cole. I think highly of Cole, too.
HalfAstros7
One of Bukauskus or Martes, Fisher, Moran, and Paulino ought to be a pretty solid starting point. Personally I would not mind seeing Martes pitch elsewhere, but I think Bukauskus can be our closer if the future.
jtkuch
Add in Martes or Paulino and that’s a deal
matthew102402
As a mariner fan, this just hurts my heart.
ronnsnow
It shouldn’t. As a Pirates fan I can tell you Cole isn’t that good. As soon as things start going badly he allows them to spiral out of control. And last year he gave up an absurd amount of HRs.
Robertowannabe
One thing the Astros lineup would do for Cole is allow him to just pitch and not trying to throw a shut out every time out. He pitched a lot of games where the Bucs scored 2 runs or less. He tries to be to perfect sometimes and that leads to the HRs. Tries to blow something by a batter and it is too flat and it goes out of the park. That is where the spiraling out of control happens with him. He gives up a run or two and then thinks it is all over unless he pitches perfect for the rest of the game and you can not pitch trying to be perfect.
TJECK109
They won the WS with Charlie Morton and Francisco Liriano. I’m sure Cole will end up finding his way once he doesn’t have to go out there feeling he can only give up one or two runs to have a chance to win.
ronnsnow
Liriano didn’t contribute anything.
MB923
Liriano didn’t start a single game for the Astros last year, and he threw a grand total of 2.1 IP in the postseason.
ldfanatic
Were you not watching the WS? Had several crucial outs.
jolink65
That was my feeling as a Yankees fan; I was really hoping the negotiations would fall apart, I think Cole has talent, but he’s not a front-of-the-rotation guy at this point and I don’t think he ever will replicate his 2015 stats. I don’t blame Pittsburgh for their high asking price, but I think the Yankees, or any other team, would be stupid to give up a boatload of prospects for Cole, and he gives up a ton of home runs.
geejohnny
Cole is not a home run pitcher. Last year no doubt but check his career. Still a power arm and a super competitor. Comeback coming….whoever with.
MB923
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him comeback, but I also wouldn’t be surprised to see him give up more HR.
jimmyz
Last season basically doubled the total homers he’s allowed in his whole career to that point. Not hard at all to imagine that being the outlier in terms of home runs allowed.
jolink65
He’d be moving to Yankees Stadium though, and we all know how often routine fly balls land on the other side of the wall, plus he’d be moving from the NL to the AL and that transition can be rough.
brucewayne
There are plenty of home runs hit in that band box of Houston too!
dfinmozarks
Sorry to see that apparently another of the few decent starters in this thin FA field is heading somewhere besides St Louis.
It appears that our F.O. is satisfied with a rotation with only one good starter and no proven closer – despite a bunch of good ones being available.
Waino hasn’t had a good season since his Achilles injury and we’ve lost our #2 starter in Lynn. Wacha has a long history of shoulder problems. The rest are potentially good contributors but unproven. They tried Lyons as a starter with mixed results. Reyes looked fine but blew out his elbow and needed TJ. Chances are slim that he will come back as a starter this quickly. The remaining starters have all had flashes of glory and agonies of defeat with Weaver being the closest to being reliable and Flaherty being the least ready based on last seasons results.
Maybe they are happy with another 500 season and a 3rd place finish as long as we continue to have sellouts.
baseballpun
What if he’s your third starter instead of your ace?
skeebwilcox
As another Pirates fan I can tell you that that other Pirates fan spoke the absolute truth. Gerrit Cole is not that good…
Zissou
Don’t worry Matthew… our GM is very comforting telling M’s fans how comfortable he is with the strength and depth of the starting rotation…………………………………………..
pro4pro32goathletics
It will help the Astros get worse in 2020 and later, they shouldn’t do that in my opinion. Martes and Paulino can be their depth, if they can develop they could be the replacement for Keuchel and Morton for after 2018. But as an A’s fan I guess Oakland would have a better chance of winning the AL WEST in 2020 and later if the Astros go all in it for the next 2 years.
Chris Sale Amateur Tailor
thing is you don’t know what the long term future holds. but the Astros are stacked right now and I think Cole could be the piece that propels then to another WS if they win next year who cares about 2020
steven st croix
Cole as a #3 in Houston, with that lineup, is scary.
dwhitt3
Not that scary
dudeness88
SCARY BRO
newagescamartist
Not that scary? Best lineup in the majors.
strostro
#4 behind Keuchel, Verlander, and McCullers
herecomethephillies2018
Cole would be the #3 over McCullers. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a HUGE LM fan, but he has to show he can pitch an entire season without spending several months on the DL if he’s going to take that next step.
yanks02026
Just like they said the Yankees were close to getting him.
I’m sure the pirates will trade him for nothing will wanting the Yankees top prospect.
roadapple
I don’t see the Astros trading Whitley. Tigers wanted him for Verlander and they turned them down too. It will be Tucker or Fisher.
ronnsnow
Cole doesn’t come with Verlander’s contract.
baseballpun
Or Verlander’s pedigree.
tylerall5
Or Verlander’s age
GoGreen_GoSoylentGreen
Or Verlander’s winning smile…
jolink65
Or Verlander’s fiancee.
OnlyRaysFan
Make that Verlander’s wife. Got married during the WS celebration
Tom E. Snyder
No Tucker or Whitley.
Bald Vinny
Not going to get anyone better then Frazier for Cole.
Chris Sale Amateur Tailor
thing is the pirites don’t want outfielders
MB923
He’s trolling
Adios pelota!
Why not? If they trade mccutchen they got room and if its a cheap quality prospect(s) it makes at least some sense. Don’t get me wrong I think they could use some pitching but maybe they get both.
dkramer
HUGE pickup to the Stros. Will be interesting to see who goes the other way. Hopefully this will be the move that gets FA moving!
Jack Taddy
The rest of the NL Central rejoices!
chri
Angels fans must be pissed.
They have the best player in baseball, re-signed Upton, and won the Ohtani sweepstakes; but are still (likely) only contending for a wild card this year.
chri
Oh, and I forgot how they signed Zack Cozart too.
jb19
I don’t see Astros parting with Tucker, who is a better prospect than Frazier btw, or Whitley. If that is the case though, Pirates did well. There are a lot of good youngsters the Astros have that are blocked. Pirates can get a decent quantity back. Not sure about the top prospects though.
John peterson
Pirates would not budge with yanks about wanting torres in the deal, i don’t know the astros farm but im guessing if your number 1 is anything like torres, consider him gone.
jb19
Tucker is #1 and Whitley is #2. I believe both are top 30 in all of baseball… but Torres is #1 in all of baseball. And more highly thought of… my gut is telling me Tucker is gone.
MB923
I believe Torres is #2 now behind Ohtani
bastros88
the astros have a ton of good prospects, the problem is that they are blocked. Guys like J.D Davis, David Paulino, Martes, Alvarez, or Colin Moran
John peterson
That was the cubs issue, almost all of them were blocked for years so they traded them, torres would have never got a chance for quite awhile and the kid is a potential star, it would of hurt much worse if they didn’t win the ws but after 108 years, no cubs fan is gonna worry about what torres does lol
ronnsnow
I would think the Pirates would want Fisher over Tucker since he’s MLB ready now. Cutch is on his way out and Fisher and Meadows can compete with each other.
jb19
I don’t think any organization would choose Fisher over Tucker. But Fisher looks like he’s going to be a Springer type player with better baserunning skills but destined for LF because for some reason his tools aren’t catching up w his defense.
Tom E. Snyder
Fisher made a great catch in CF for the Astros last year. I think he can play any OF position.
John peterson
They are rebuilding now, i don’t think they are worried about someone ready now. They are gonna go after the best they can get and it’s probably tucker or whitley.
yanks02026
Tucker wasn’t rated higher the Frazier. But A for effort.
thecoffinnail
Do the Pirates really need 2 more OF’s? They have Meadows ready to replace Cutch, Polonco and Marte.. Plus Lolo seems like the type of player that will rise through the minors quickly.. Adam Frazier is a decent 4th OF who seems to be improving.. They didn’t seem to want Frazier from the Yankees.. I don’t see how they pass on him yet accept Fisher..
thecoffinnail
Tucker and Martes would be my guess.. The AStros are OF rich and can afford to let Tucker go (even though it will hurt)..
streicher187
Well since it’s the worst GM in the last 30 years for the Pirates I expect very little in return just like 95% of his other trades of good players for prospects.. 10 years of Terrible drafts, Terrible Trades, Terrible contract extensions and the GM gets a 4 year extension. Proving once and for all with this owner all that matters is the 000 in his bank account not the product on the field and what genius would do a rebuild the year you get a 50 million dollar check from MLB and you are negotiating a new TV contract
Yankeepatriot
OMG THANK YOU ASTROS !!!! I’m glad they are taking cole cause imo the Yankees trading for him would have been a huge mistake. Is there a chance this can be a “be careful what you wish for ?” Type of thing and he beats us in a big spot in the future ? Sure but I will take my chances. The Yankees are in great shape without cole anyway
arc89
Astros are all in on another title. This means the angels wasted more money to hope and pray for a wild card berth. As of now it looks like the yanks and astros will be the top teams in the AL. All other will just be hoping to get to the WC spot.
Yankeepatriot
I want that rematch soooooo badly !!!!! It was a battle to the end and both teams have improved this off season
brucewayne
Still gotta play the games ! Lots of things can happen in a 162 very long
brucewayne
and grueling season!
Yankeepatriot
I bet the pirates asked the pirates for less than they did from ny, I just know it lol
astrosfan5
God I hope this doesnt happen if Tucker or Whitley are involved. Other than 2015 season I have never been impressed with Cole. Hes not worth those prospects for 2 years of control. Id rather see JT Realmuto rumors with those kind of prospects.
davengmusic
Fisher, Moran, Reed and one of Martes or Paulino.
Wannabekillerb
I don’t see how this makes sense going forward. The plan was to aquire a front line starter who would be here long after Keuchel left. Cole only has two years remaining himself.
Yankeepatriot
An extension could possibly happen but otherwise I agree
chound
Man, if I were an Astros fan, I’d be through the roof excited. Long term, it’s an issue, but for the right now window with one championship in the bank… This would be hella exciting.
Tom E. Snyder
This story is #fakenews.
3Rivers
When Cole wins 19 with a sub 3.40 era and helps the (insert team here) en route to beating the Yankees and Eventually onto the WS, possibly winning it, the same Yankees fans that are cheering not to get Cole will be crying, bi*****g about how their Pitching was the reason they lost in 18′ and that they should have made a deal for Cole. ……………………….
