DEC. 11: The Rockies’ interest in Davis continues, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports (on Twitter). Davis is one of “numerous” possibilities for the Rockies, who are trying to add multiple relievers, per Rosenthal. They were interested in re-signing Pat Neshek before he agreed to join the Phillies on Monday, Rosenthal adds.
DEC. 2: With Greg Holland currently on the open market, the closer-needy Rockies have shown interest in fellow free agent Wade Davis and spoken with the Orioles about Zach Britton, Jon Morosi of MLB.com reported earlier this week (Twitter link).
Colorado’s interest in both players isn’t particularly surprising when you consider that Holland and two other key members of its 2017 bullpen – Jake McGee and Pat Neshek – are unsigned. Thanks in part to those three, the Rockies’ bullpen enjoyed a seismic turnaround from 2016 to ’17, thus helping the club to its first playoff season since 2009. With Holland, McGee and Neshek on the market, the Rockies’ relief corps looks decidedly less imposing than it did late in the season, leading general manager Jeff Bridich to acknowledge last month that it’s going to be a key area of focus this winter.
Between Davis and Britton, the former would require a much bigger commitment from a financial standpoint. The 32-year-old Davis was among the game’s best relievers with the Rays, Royals and Cubs from 2012-17 and now stands as arguably the premier bullpen piece in free agency. MLBTR projects a four-year, $60MM payday for the right-handed Davis, who rejected the Cubs’ qualifying offer at the outset of the offseason. The Rockies would only lose their third-highest 2018 draft pick if they were to sign Davis, though, as the team’s a revenue-sharing recipient that did not exceed the competitive balance tax last season.
Britton, a southpaw, is only under control for another year – at a projected $12.2MM – and should be popular in trade rumors this offseason as a result. GM Dan Duquette suggested this week that the Orioles are inclined to keep Britton as they seek a bounce-back year in 2018, but he also noted that “there’s a lot of interest” in the soon-to-be 30-year-old. Britton is coming off a somewhat disappointing season, however, despite a 2.89 ERA and a 72.6 percent groundball rate across 37 1/3 innings. Britton dealt with forearm issues, leading to a drop in velocity, and posted 6.99 K/9 against 4.34 BB/9. He was at 9.94 and 2.42 in those categories during a 2016 campaign that saw him record a jaw-dropping .54 ERA over 67 frames and garner American League Cy Young consideration.
With Baseball America’s 15th-ranked farm system, the Rockies likely have enough in the pipeline to put together a package for Britton if the Orioles are willing to move him. But there are plenty of viable late-game options available in free agency if a trade doesn’t come together. In addition to Davis, the Rockies have thus far shown reported interest in Holland – although, as a qualifying recipient, his departure would net them a high draft pick – as well as Brandon Kintzler.

Spend that money on a closer . Chapman Melancon and Jansen watched Astros get the ring
Slipknot37
And only Jansen has really deserved that money so far. But still, Astros are still probably going to try to get another closer. Or at least that’s what I heard
Realtexan
The Rangers are also looking for a top closer also. Since the Astros let Friers go and there only left handed relief is trash I would think they also would go out and get a top closer to especially a left hander
bbatardo
Astros barely won the series and had they had to rely on closer game 7 they might have lost lol
Philliesfan4life
If the Astros could trade for Brad Hand and maybe sign Holland, lights out bullpen there.
stroh
Well, it sure did the Dodgers a lot of good to have a ‘lights out’ closer, didn’t it? And what happened to their highly successful regular season bullpen? Not saying the Stros don’t need to improve their bullpen, but guys like Giles, Devenski, Harris and Musgrove did well in the regular season too. Lots of it comes down to being able to step up your game in the playoffs, and neither the stros or Dodgers bullpen did that. And oh by the way about 29 other teams would have liked to “barely win” the word series.
slider32
Verlander got the Astros the ring!
Yankeepride88
Oh yeah? How would the Cubs have done without Chapman? How about the Royals without Holland, Davis, or Herrera? What about the Giants without Romo, Affeldt, Lopez, and Wilson? The answer is… Most years a dominant bullpen wins the World Series. The Astros are the anomaly
AvidAstrosFan
Actually the Astros are not the anomaly. Their bullpen was very good. If you watched last years playoffs ALL pitchers including the starters got hit hard. The Dodgers super strong BP got beat up also. This past season was the season of the bat. Do look for Houston to bolster their pen because of the end of a few reliever contracts.
Kayrall
Agreed. The Astros bullpen was quite strong, but just lacked that utterly dominating closer.
slider32
The key to their winning was the use of their 4th and 5th starters as relief pitchers and Verlander.
brucewayne
Pitching and defense wins championships !
Chebert
The wording is a little cumbersome at the end there; it makes it seems like you’re saying Kintzler also got a qualifying offer.
tpad
I wouldn’t want to sign Davis to a 4 year deal. Considering his injury history, 2 guaranteed years with a 3rd year player option seems like the right contract from a team’s standpoint.
sidewinder11
Somebody will give him 4 years though. He may only deserve 2 or 3 but lots of teams are in the market for a quality reliever and the price will only go up once they start a bidding war
camdenyards46
Sidewinder-absolutely correct
The_Porcupine
Hope the O’s do trade Britton. One of Rockies pitchers that shuttled between rotation, bullpen and triple a plus either Dahl or tapia. Regardless of where they trade Britton, they have to bring back a someone with upside for the rotation.
slider32
The O’s need to keep Britton, there window is closing fast. They could trade him at the deadline. If the are trying to trade him it looks like he is hurt.
Ski to Coors
I agree with this, Britton’s value could be much higher mid season if he’s pitching well. He’s a risk, coming off a down year with injury concerns. If he wasn’t getting 12M this year, he’d have more value, the contractual value is more in that its just 1 year. Right now for me, he is worth 1 upper level fringe prospect and a low level reliever. If Britton can return to form, he could easily get an elite prospect in return mid season.
dimitriinla
Britton’s velocity may have dropped when he wasn’t healthy, which was often enough. But at several points throughout the season he possessed his normal 96+ mile per hour velocity. (I know — I watched all those games.)
slider32
My question is if the O’a aren’t tanking to rebuild and Britton is healthy why would they trade him.
slider32
So why would the O’s want to move him if they are going for it? Brach is the one I would question, the O’s have over used him the last few years.
Ski to Coors
Exactly, a pre season trade is very unlikely. They’d basically be giving him up right now. If he doesn’t bounce back, they can still get a fringe prospect or two, and if he does bounce back, he’ll get an elite prospect in return.
Paul Heyman
I think kintzler is the way to go for the Rockies, but I think have a 35/65 chance of bringing neshek or holland back. I think holland will go to the cards or another competitive team.
Connorsoxfan
I’d bring back Neshek and sign Kintzler, and maybe add another arm, but just an average one who can give you reliable innings, not someone for top dollar.
Thronson5
It surprises me any closer can do well in Colorado. Seems like no lead is safe there with that thin air. But their closer was actually really good last year.
funkmasta198
You would think if anyone could Britton would be the guy with his hard sinking fastball, his ground ball % has been 79, 80 and 72 the past three seasons
Kayrall
Those are just incredible numbers.
dwilson10
If the Rockies want Britton, the O’s need to aim high on prospect return. They likely wouldn’t get Rodgers or Pint but maybe they go for McMahon, Almonte, and possibly Howard.
dimitriinla
Yes there should be plenty of competition for him this offseason.
jbigz12
McMahon would be a great get but I don’t think we can get that for one year of Britton coming off an injured shaky year. David Dahl would be a good grab too. Though if we make that move our playoffs chances are pretty much shot. We don’t have a decent lefty in our pen and you move Brach or givens to closer and our pen is a whole lot less deep. O’Day givens Brach is still better than most teams on the back end but we’re pretty thin behind those guys and we need to over compensate in the bullpen for our starting pitching. If it’s McMahon that’s gotta be a yes.
dwilson10
I agree but Donnie Hart has shown the ability to be an average to slightly above average lefty arm in the pen and if Bleir can be as successful as last year I think giving up Britton would be fine. They could also use some of the money freed up to sign a veteran lefty arm for the bullpen.
Bill 23
Rockies should make a play for Britton. They have their core basically at the Major League level. I would think they would want to get Dahl and Rodgers added to that core, but everyone else is easily moveable. If the Rockies put together a strong bullpen, add a proven corner outfield or first base bat, and add a mid range starter (Lance Lynn or Alex Cobb type) they should be in the mix for the NL West and/or the Wild Card next year.
Benklasner
They need to give McMahon regular at bats.
