The latest on the Orioles comes in a pair of articles from Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com…
- It’s unclear how many “untouchable” players the Orioles have, but second baseman Jonathan Schoop, outfielder Trey Mancini and reliever Mychal Givens are among them, an executive from outside the organization told Kubatko at the Winter Meetings. The lone player of those three who’s not under control for the long haul is Schoop, who has two arbitration-eligible years remaining. The Orioles will attempt to extend him sometime soon, Kubatko suggests. Mancini is controllable for the next half-decade, including two pre-arb campaigns, while Givens is under wraps for four more seasons (he’ll be eligible for arbitration in a year).
- While talking Manny Machado with the Cardinals, the Orioles showed interest in a trio of right-handers – Luke Weaver, Jack Flaherty and Jordan Hicks – as well as catcher Carson Kelly, Kubatko relays. In acquiring Weaver and Flaherty, the Orioles would accomplish their goal of getting two major league-ready starters for their top player. Of course, it’s questionable whether the Cardinals would even part with one (let alone both) for a single year of Machado. Weaver held his own across 60 1/3 innings last season for the Cards, who may not be in position to lose another starter with free agent Lance Lynn likely set to depart, while Flaherty ranks as MLB.com’s 48th-best prospect.
- The Orioles are reportedly trying to acquire Royals left-hander Danny Duffy, but Kubatko throws cold water on the possibility. Baltimore is indeed interested in Duffy, but it’s unlikely a deal with Kansas City will come together, in part because the Royals aren’t “aggressively shopping” the soon-to-be 29-year-old, Kubatko hears.
- Although the Orioles are seeking a left-handed hitter, they don’t seem to have interest in free agent Jon Jay, per Kubatko. That differs from previous offseasons when Jay was on the O’s radar, he notes. Conversely, Baltimore could consider Preston Tucker, whom the Astros designated for assignment Friday.

Braves need to get in on the Machado sweepstakes. They have the pieces and a need at 3B. Only if they can sign him long term, that is.
Yankeepatriot
Would he want to play there though. That’s the big part of any team going for him
steelerbravenation
He wants to play SS and by all means I wouldn’t let Swanson stand in the way of that but I think that is a move they would think about next offseason when there is a ton of money available.
This year I would like the Braves to get Headley with the Padres eating the salary i don’t know what prospect could get that done but i hope they look into it maybe Sims could do it I don’t know
NL_East_Rivalry
That won’t happen. AA wants someone that can play defense.
osfandan
You do know he won a platinum glove and had quite possibly the best defensive season in history, right?
sandman12
Sure, why not get Headley for free? His OPS was the same as Manny Machado’s last season.
bradthebluefish
Swanson + Prospect for Machado.
Sam.rhodes16
Mancini for Swanson maybe lol Swanson plus a prospect is just obviously foolish to anyone except a delusional Orioles’ homer.
teufelshunde4
Just 2 years ago Braves fans were swooning over Swanson too..
Houston We Have A Solution
If padres are eating the salary on Headley completely itll cost a decent prospect or 2. Someone like Touki Touissant or Kyle Muller and possibly Freddy Tarnok.
msjrn509
And go to loser
stymeedone
The O’s are not giving a negotiating window. So do you want the Braves involved with that stipulation, or not?
wild05fan
Mancini and Givens untouchable lol. Sorry that’s ridiculous for anyone to honestly say that even if they were kidding.
Woodlawn
Orioles in a tough spot. Machado is going to be a Yankee. No one is going to give up top notch prospects for 1 year. They aren’t apparently giving a window and all word out of Machado’s circle is he won’t sign an extension with anyone but Yankees. People in Baltimore have been fitting him for a Yankee uniform for a few years now. Angelos and Duquette just need to bite the bullet and deal with the Yankees and salvage a few decent prospects because if they keep him, they are gonna lose him to the Yankees for nothing.

Google Machado Yankees. There’s about 1000 articles about all this. Google is surprisingly easy to use, you should try it.
swanhenge
Articles? Or facts? Even better, and to your point, quotes.
You can’t believe everything you read on the internet. Especially during a slow MLB off season when editors are looking for stories from their writers.

You’re so wise! You do realize you’re on a rumors site right? Thanks for the lecture professor
Polymath
Rumors, facts, alternative facts, fake news, and gossip. One must distinguish between each one carefully. For a great synopsis Google: Trump Twitter

There are about 1000 articles of Stanton going to Cardinals, another 1000 to giants, about 2000 going to the dodgers.. how’d that turn out dunce
Dodgethis
I hope you’re not trying to imply that CNN, the Washington post, msnbc, Yahoo, and a handful of other companies are anything but propaganda. Let’s try to stay focused on baseball and not the delusions of the left.

Houston We Have A Solution
Those 1000 Ohtani going to be a yankee articles taught you nothing about reliability of rumors?
Yankeepatriot
The orioles should have flipped Britton during the deadline and should flip jones and machado this off season. All three of those guys are going to walk and chances are the draft pick compensation players they get for losing them won’t make up for the loss of those players. Angelos is a really dumb GM
Wahoo12
Angelos isn’t the GM…

What would we do without your wisdom???

I ment to put owner but my point still stands lol

You meant ‘Duquette is a really dumb gm’

Cubs need Machado. Schwarber, Baez and Montgomery plus a prospect for Machado and Britton. Blockbuster.
I’ll miss Schwarber but Bryant is a big upgrade in LF. Machado defensive upgrade over Bryant at 3B. Team to beat in NL.
Yankeepatriot
Do you think shwarbs will reach his potential ?
EndinStealth
Not a chasnce.
hollidayfever
Schwarber is a bad player overall so far and Baez is a 2WAR player. They’re role players and no one else wants them besides Cubs fans for anything valuable in return. Montgomery is a bullpen pitcher and all your prospects suck at this point after the trade for the white Sox starter last year.
JonCor
That’s ridiculous, Braves aren’t ready to contend in ‘18 so why in god’s name would it make sense to trade prospects from a rebuilding team for a year of Machado?
Kayrall
Tololololol
bluejaysfan
Swap Russell for Baez and MAYBE they listen. Also may need to add another pitcher in place of Schwarber. Machado wants to play SS, so if you make this deal you need to move Russell. Baez can play 3B. Orioles get a young SS, two young pitchers and a prospect… not bad.
igotabooner
No just no even if they swapped Russell in for baez no chance that gets you machado alone let alone Zach Britton on top of that… you’re right though that deal is not bad for the o’s it’s downright terrible if that’s the move they made
bigcheesegrilledontoast
The Cardinals should offer Flaherty, Pham, Grichuk and Hicks. Weaver and Kelly shouldn’t be going anywhere. Weaver deserves his spot in the rotation this year. Kelly deserves more playing time but is too important to trade now.
dazedatnoon
i’d be surprised if Cardinals move Pham
STLShadows
Cards aren’t Moving Pham, he’s arguably their best hitter
bigcheesegrilledontoast
Pham might have been there best hitter last season but he is not in the top 5 hitters overall.
eatonculo
That’s way, way too much for one year of Machado. No chance the Cardinals give up two top pitching prospects for any position player.
They might do it for someone like Archer but they’d have to get a top pitcher back.
philbosanquet
Top pitcher with more than one year of control…
simschifan
Some of these trade proposals are funny as hell. You guys are offering everyday starting players with basically no backups for 1 year of 1 player. If he has a down year you just gave him away. It’s a good thing none of you are gm’s
Dodgethis
While it’s true most commenters don’t understand markets, trade value, or team culture, this is a site specifically for speculation. If you’re that angry that someone doesn’t agree with you find a new site!
headhawks
No way. That is way tooo much… Pham aint going anywhere. Unless they throw in Britton and let them negotiate a contract but see below…
Also STL has declared they are not in on the Machado hostage situation. They will NOT trade for him without ability to negotiate a contract.
cards81
Cardinals should give up Wacha and Hudson …that’s it…two years of control for Wacha and six years of control for Hudson…Cardinals sign Arrieta to replace Wacha then get a closer and they would be all in for 2018… it no way would I give up Flaherty or weaver for one year of Machado
extremecardinalsfan
That seems like a horrible deal.
dazedatnoon
White Sox could offer them a Carson Fulmer, a minor league pitcher (Dunning), and a left handed bat…..
Nicky Delmonico LOL. They might have heard of the guy……
bearup
Too much for one year. Especially a non-contending year. Hahn is way too smart for that. I hope.
Voice of Reason
So, in one paragraph the oriole’s are making everyone available except for two younger players.
Then, in another paragraph, the Orioles are said to be interested in Duffy.
Pick a lane oriole’s. Are you rebuilding or building for 2018? Very strange.
Polymath
Agree: pick a lane. Better still, get on the “Road.” If one is more focused on preventing one player from going to one particular team than on improving one’s own team and organization, then you have a failed strategy and are not on the Road to Success.
philbosanquet
Just stop with the Weaver and Flaherity for one year of Machado pipe dream. That’s 40% of next years rotation.
Yankeepatriot
No need to trade them for 1 year of machado
jbigz12
Doubt it. Mikolas waino weaver Martinez and wacha is 5. Not to mention Reyes. One of flaherty or weaver is expendable
sandman12
For the right to pay Machado $17M for a year? Do you realize that Machado put up a .732 OPS last year? That’s .200 less than Tommy Phrickin’ Phan.
Birdwatcher
#Math
philbosanquet
As much as I love Waino, would you count on him for a whole season? Would you bet money that Wacha gets anywhere above 160 innings next year? You just don’t count on gettin through the season on 5 starters. Sorry, if you trade one of those now, they’ll pay through the nose for a replacement before the end of the season. Then in 2019 you have no Machado and no farm.
CubsTroll
I doubt very seriously Waino makes the rotation, especially if they are able to pick up another sp. If honestly prefer to see that and let him be used as a set up man or hell, even a closer.
Nnnjjjjjhhjj
The Orioles are idiots-Cardinals would be dumb to do that. Machado has already made it clear he wants the money. They should have traded him last year before the deadline. At least teams would have had a stretch run with him and an entire season.
GarryHarris
Can anyone generally predict what the O’s will do? I can’t. The want younger and faster so they sign Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo. They want pitching so, they will take more Chris Davis-Mark Trumbo caliber players.
SupremeZeus
If history tells us anything, it is whatever the Orioles do it won’t work out and will be the wrong move. You have to feel for O’s fans.
Jo Daddy
Shows how much they aren’t willing to move Machado lol. No way Cardinals give up one of those names for Machado to be there one year.
cubbies95
I think any team that trades for Machado is going to be highly disappointed come this time next year. I mean he’s only 25, getting ready to enter his prime years and he’s set to make 300+ million and choose where he goes. I think he’s dead set on testing FA and who would blame him? Unless the team who trades for him wins the World Series next season, it’s all for nothing
Cardinal
Baltimore’s leverage and player return would be greater if a negotiable window existed. Otherwise, not sure if a max return will ever be obtained.
Frank kemble
They need a rebuild or a soft rebuild. At this point, with Machardo not working an extension with a trade partner, I would still deal him but if the Yankees were to give Clint Fraizer and Chance Adams then he would be gone.
On the other hand, Adam Jones has gone to ownership and stated he wants to win. Probably won’t extend him unless you extend Machardo/Britton and show you’re putting a competitive product on the field, so he’s really in the same boat. Giants for prospect Andrew Suarez, maybe Austin Slater too.
Britton to Houston.
Davis maybe to the yanks for ellsbury in a salary swap, which to me cutting the strikeouts and low average out could improve their lineup. Same with trumbo..maybe find a salary swap for a starter…
Sign Chaffin 3/27. Push for Duffy who has 4 yrs of control.
Point being is I would move the big pieces who are becoming free agents….get young value but you’re also clearing that money off. Not a full rebuild but a chemistry change. Frazier, mancini..a chance adams…maybe an athletic outfielder, another prospect….those are pieces they can at least start to build a new core with. Dont matter to me that machardo is a superstar d he requires a 400 million dollar market value…..hes a ball player… The money spent on , jones and britton can be reshuffled with young pieces round them. Or …..all it takes is being aggressive and acquire garritt cole and signing darvish to an ungodly number and they can atleast give a wild card run in the last yr of jones and machardo and if it dont work out then they have several deadline chips and can build a rotation next yr around darvish. There are 20 ways to go…they just need to be youthful or creative and inject more talent one way or another. My best solution….
Acquire duffy and sign cobb. Trade britton now for a starter. Trade machardo and Jones at the deadline and figure what to do about davis and trumbo and finding younger and more athletic, cheaper alternatives….then next yr you’re starting with duffy, cobb, bundy and gausman..spend that money on a top flight starter or two.
dazedatnoon
I get they want to compete, but like many others have said….shopping in the bargain bin for pitching probably won’t get it done. They refuse to pick up a top end pitcher for the staff so they will likely fall short again.
Orioles should consider moving Machado and Jones to the White Sox. Jones is a average player now as he ages and would free up $17m in payroll space while allowing Hays to take over centerfield mid season. White Sox could easily take on that contract with little commitments elsewhere. This allows the Orioles to tap into the pitching market, maybe Cobb/Lynn or even Darvish.
Carson Fulmer, Yolmer Sanchez, Dane Dunning, Spencer Adams, Jordan Stephens
Orioles are getting:
1. payroll relief by moving 32 yr old Jones
2. a young pitcher under control for several years in Fulmer
3. a switch hitting, “glove first” utility infielder. good teams have depth in case of injuries
4. three pitching prospects, one is just outside the top 100.
Sign 2 of (Darvish, Cobb, Lynn) and Todd Frazier with the payroll savings from Machado/Jones.
Darvish, Cobb, Gausman, Bundy, Fulmer is a good rotation.
Sox can try to extend Machado (unlikely) and if not, they could move him for position player prospects to fill holes in the system. Jose Abreu, Avisail Garcia, Nate Jones, James Shields, Adam Jones, and Welington Castillo could all be marketed at the deadline if they choose.
Sox having Rick Renteria, two former teammates to help transition smoothly (A.Jones, W.Castillo), Jose Abreu and Yoan Moncada, and a ton of upside for the team’s future is about the best hope they have for persuading Machado to return to the Southside. It is a LOOOOOONG shot but I can squint my eyes and see a chance.
bearup
Yeah, no. Orioles should do it in a heartbeat. Sox would get absolutely nothing of value out of the deal. Find another sucker.
DisplacedSTLfan
No way I want Machado for a year for Flaherty or Weaver traded
Draven_X_23
Not sure why the team wouldn’t move Schoop. He is never going to be more valuable. If I could get a solid pitcher and a couple prospects for him I’d do it.
Colorado want a new 2B?
