The Phillies have received formal trade proposals for both Freddy Galvis and Cesar Hernandez, reports Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, though nothing that has been to the team’s liking. The Phils are very open to the idea of moving either but are also comfortable heading into the 2018 season with both players, even if it crowds the infield picture for the time being. The Phillies figure to have Rhys Hoskins locked in at first base, leaving Hernandez, Galvis and J.P. Crawford as options up the middle. Any of the bunch could presumably see some time at third base over Maikel Franco as well. Eventually, top second base prospect Scott Kingery will likely force his way into the mix as well, however, further muddying the picture.
More from the National League…
- Mike Minor is one of the most popular free agents of the offseason, and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports (subscription required/recommended) that the Cubs are eyeing him as a potential option for the ninth inning. Chicago has been tied to a number of relievers already this offseason, including Brandon Morrow and Addison Reed, and it seems likely that they’ll pursue multiple ’pen arms after non-tendering Hector Rondon and seeing Wade Davis, Brian Dunesing and Koji Uehara hit free agency.
- The Braves are in the market for a veteran shortstop that can serve as a backup option at multiple positions, per David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Atlanta has Dansby Swanson and Ozzie Albies penciled in up the middle and is comfortable using Johan Camargo at third base while prospect Austin Riley continues to develop, O’Brien notes. While Camargo himself could fill the role the Braves are seeking, they’d then need to add a third baseman, and O’Brien notes that the team doesn’t want to block Riley by working out a long-term deal with a free agent option.
- The catcher position remains a glaring need for the Nationals, writes Fangraphs’ Travis Sawchik, who opines that the team should aggressively pursue upgrades despite the fact that they’re already widely favored to win the division. The Nats have just one year of Bryce Harper guaranteed to them, and it’s anyone’s guess how long both Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg will continue pitching at elite levels. Matt Wieters’ dismal offense and poor framing were all the more apparent in the postseason, Sawchik observes, and that latter deficiency is particularly troublesome in the playoffs. Amid offseason reports that the Nats will be open to dealing Yasmani Grandal, Sawchik argues that he’s the perfect upgrade for the Nats due to his elite framing skills. It’d also be worthwhile to try to pry Tyler Flowers away from the Braves, he suggests, though intra-division trades are often more difficult to negotiate, and there’s been no indication that the Braves would make Flowers available.
FloridaMan1988
Don’t you mean dealing for Grandal as he is a Dodger?
em650r
Nats want Grandal maybe for a decent pitcher
jorleeduf
It would have to be a very good pitcher, not decent.
carlisle5
Are you f*cking dumb they have f*cking weiters and they have sisco their prospect idiot
SoCalStuntman
“Amid offseason reports that the Nats will be open to dealing Yasmani Grandal, …”
I think you meant the Dodgers would be open to dealing him.
agentx
Travis Sawchik, must be mistaken. “What [Wieters] does for a pitching staff is off the charts & in great demand,” according to Scott Boras.
sufferforsnakes
He meant the other team’s pitching staff.
angelsinthetroutfield
Wonder what the Angels would offer for Cesar. Jamie Barria and Brandon Marsh enough?
BillGiles
Skaggs+ or Jones and Barria might do it.
angelsinthetroutfield
Would they really want Skaggs with the injury history though?
Biggest upside arm would probably be Chris Rodriguez who’s probably 2-3 yrs out. Rodriguez and Marsh would be a significant hit to the farm but I’d probably do it.
Brixton
Rodriguez isn’t very good lol.
I’d be down for Canning and Marsh. 3 cheap years of a 3 WAR player aren’t going to be easy to acquire imo.
angelsinthetroutfield
Don’t think they can trade Canning as he was a 2017 draftee. Rodriguez results were rough last yr but scouts love his stuff and projectability. I’d probably rather trade Canning TBH
brucewayne
I think he can be traded in July. But I’m not positive on that .
Regi Green
I personally don’t think Barria will work for the Phillies. I think if they take back a pitcher that has to be on the 40, they’re gonna want more of a sure thing. If they take a pitching prospect, think they’ll want someone they can wait atleast a year or 2 to add.
BillGiles
Probably
Coast1
The Phillies have 13 starting pitchers on their 40 man, 10 of whom will either pitch at AAA or the Majors, while the other 3 will start at AA. They have more back end of the rotation pitchers like Tyler Skaggs than they can keep and likely will trade a few of them.
The problem with making a trade with the Phillies is that they have a ton of depth but not a lot of high end talent. Trading Hernandez for more players like the ones they have doesn’t help them achieve their goal.
jaysfan77
Ryan Goins to Atlanta seems like an easy one. He’s more of a National League player anyways, just needs to learn to bunt.
baseball10
Good report from the clueless buster olney in regards to Braves SS. I think espn purposely misleads to draw more attention. That’s why they are in need of a full rebuild themselves
southi
ESPN is a joke right now. They’ve gotten overly political in their broadcasting slant and lost viewers in the process. In turn ESPN has gotten rid of several seasoned journalist and kept a lot of junk.
Braves Homer
Where are you guys seeing Buster Olney on this update? I see Dave O’Brien…someone else said Olney too is why I ask
Chris Sale Amateur Tailor
Cubs need to get Duensing back. I’d offer $6m / 2 years with a mutual option for a third year at the same rate.
OaklandKAM
Why would the Dodgers trade Grandal to another NL contender?
letsplay2
Bye bye Dansby.
casmith12
What? No chance they’re looking for a legit replacement for him. The article makes it pretty clear they’re looking for a vet utility player. Dansby has a bright future in Atlanta, and it’s absurd to judge him off of one bad season, especially with it being his rookie season.
letsplay2
Kemp, Tehran & Dansby to be packaged.
RunDMC
No chance packaging Kemp, he’s well past his sell-by date. Might as well spoil him and toss him into the bread pudding.
casmith12
Why would they package Kemp with a player like Dansby or Tehran? That’s selling low to the extreme, and not to mention leaving a huge hole at SS and in the rotation. If you package Kemp, you do it with lower level minor league prospects. Honestly, it’s not worth packaging him at this point. Might as well do a bad contract swap, or bite the bullet and cut him.
I don’t understand the Dansby hate either. Expectations for him were ridiculously high, and people are too quick to write him off as a bust. Give the kid time, and he’ll come around. Not every rookie is dominant like Trout was or Judge. Be patient with the process. It’s not like the Braves are really going to be true competitors this season. (Coming from a lifelong Braves fan)
tharrie0820
Even if the Braves were giving up on Dansby, they’d just move Albies back over to SS instead of trying to acquire a vet to fill the position. I think people have a tendency to forget Albies is a natural shortstop who got moved off cause they thought he’d do better at 2nd than Dansby
casmith12
Exactly. Olney was simply using the clickbait tactic to rile people up. They’ll probably sign a vet to be a utility player to help with stability.
Braves Homer
Where are you guys seeing Buster Olney on this update? I see Dave O’Brien…someone else said Olney too is why I ask
casmith12
The original report was by Olney. I’m on the MLB TR app, and I believe the article referencing him is about 3 or 4 articles down.
Backatitagain
Sign Matt Adams back, then trade Freddie Freeman, Tyler Flowers and Kemp to the Nationals for Anthony Rendon, Pedro Severino and Trea Turner.
Brixton
Lol
casualatlfan
Out of pure curiosity, what made you think your idea was remotely realistic or even good overall? I’m legitimately curious about your thought process for this trade proposal (as well as other ones you’ve made as well).
wrigleywannabe
Then, after you fail your urine test, we can get you into a good rehab,
brucewayne
What? That’s hilarious ! The Nats would NEVER do that.
Brixton
The Phillies are trying to trade a 7M, bad shortstop that seemingly other teams want, and they are not excited about getting offered anything? If money mattered in the slightest to Philly right now, he’d probably be nontendered
angelsinthetroutfield
Agreed. I kind of though he’d be dealt at the non-tender deadline. $7m is a ton to pay for a glove only player. Especially since Philly has a logjam on the big league club and guys rushing up the ranks.
cjelepis
How’s he a glove only player? Guy doesn’t have a good obp – but he’s hit 20+ hrs and is a decent hitter.
Cat Mando
245/287/372 lifetime. He had 20 hr once (and Dom Brown was once an all star) 2 years ago….he has 32 combined in his other 5 years. His highest obp was 309…his highest slg was 399. What part of that says decent hitter? His glove is the only thing that has kept him playing, Yes, I am one of many Phillies fans who hopes J.P. pans out so the Freddy days are over.
Coast1
The Phillies might be planning to sign Galvis to a deal where they pay him something like $4-5 million in a signing bonus. Then they can trade him and the other team is only on the hook for $2-3 million. That’d make him relatively cheap.
ffjsisk
Austin Riley better be the second coming of Beltre. I’m sick of reading about not blocking him at third when his calling card is his bat. We have a giant hole in left that he can slide into if the bats legit.
SimonSwings
That’s what she said? My gosh…
southi
And by almost every expert comment over the last few months agrees that Riley has SIGNIFICANTLY improved his defense at least to the point where the consensus says he should be able to play at least major league caliber defense. By no means however does that insinuate that he’ll compare to a future Hall of Famer like Beltre. If that is truly your expectations, instead of you just running off at the mouth, then it is no wonder that you seem to hold little esteem for a highly regarded prospect. Have you actually considered that the reason so many people talk about not blocking Riley is that he is supposed to be a legitimate prospect?
Kayrall
Just like Blake Swihart, Jorge Soler, and Trevor Story should all not be blocked.
ffjsisk
^^^exactly. Is Riley going to out produce Moustakas? If he hits like him, the bat will play in left. Cubs found s place for Zack their guys but please, roll out the carpet for the kid. Don’t make him earn it.
ffjsisk
for *all* their guys
southi
You do realize that Moustakas only produced 1.8 bWAR last season despite the fact he is supposed to be the “premier” thirdbaseman available this off season. I’ve seen more than a few articles speculating that Riley could just as easily put that much value up in his first full season.
Look, I’m NOT saying that Riley is a guaranteed thing. No prospect is until they do it in the majors. However Riley basically met every challenge in High A, AA and the Arizona Fall League and almost universally raised his stock even more. It makes little sense to move Riley to the outfield if he can play a major league caliber defense at third. You only move him IF he shows he can’t. Personally I’m totally against wasting money on Moustakas and would prefer that the Braves be patient on spending big this off season on position players.
Who knows what AA will do, but I have a feeling that we’ll see how his mind is decided before spring training gets here.
R.D.
J.J. Hardy is such a Braves style player and Stephen Drew is a Ga native. Those seem like the most reasonable options.
funkmasta198
2 problems, the braves are looking for a guy who can play multiple positions… J.J. Isn’t that guy at this stage. And I really think hardy is a guy who would rather retire than be a 1-2 game a week back up utility guy…too competitive in nature
jimmyz
If the Pirates end up trading Cutch or Cole and decide to ship off other pieces then I could see Jordy Mercer being a decent one year stopgap utility option for Atlanta being able to handle regular shortstop duties if necessary and even though he hasn’t done so in his career to date, I’d be comfortable with him as a part time second or third baseman.
wrigleywannabe
I don’t get why Chicago hasn’t (apparently) tried to get Dunesing back.
TradeAcuna
Yes, lets not block another overrated unproven prospect. The Braves way!
steelerbravenation
Wouldn’t mind Goins but if that is the case than I think Camargo is the 3B and I don’t like that but I also can’t see him sitting the bench as a utility guy either.
I say sign Goins for utility role
Sign Brandon Phillips to play 3B for 1 year with option
Let Camargo play everyday in Gwinnett
Sign Addison Reed
Sign Jake McGee
With the 3 young guys in the rotation we are going to need an 8 man bullpen
Reed
Vizzy
Ramirez
McGee
Minter
Freeman
Winkler
Sims
Keep Markakis til closer to the deadline but if there is a taker for Kemp make the deal immediately no reason to rush Acuna
bravesfan82
What about Profar for the utility role? Between 3rd, SS, and 2nd he could get pretty regular at-bats.
NickF
Yunel Escobar coming back to Atlanta? Primarily a 3B but could he still play SS in a pinch? Or, if he plays 3rd, Camargo can be primary utility depth?
PixelMelonz
Duensing, not Dunesing.
Gary Rogers
AA could trade with Texas\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Markakis,Kemp(give10mil.),Sims,B.Wilson and Blair for Profar,W.Calhoun and M.Matuella. sign M.Fiers. Profar could play 3BandLF .Calhoun could start in LF. Sign T.Frazier 2 yrs 24mil.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Clearly it was small interest since he just inked with the rangers.
wrigleywannabe
If he has a year that is even close to his average road numbers, he is well worth his money and would be under paid, to be truthful.
Is Jake worth the almost twice he is expected to get?
If Alex Cobb gets 20 million, is he worth that much more?
If Chatwood throws 170 innings and has a 3.50 ERA it’s an under pay.
