It has been a highly productive offseason thus far for the Angels, who re-upped Justin Upton, signed Shohei Ohtani, and most recently dealt for Ian Kinsler — a swap in which the organization benefited from the fact that they were the preferred destination of Kinsler, whose carefully constructed partial no-trade list gave him ample leverage. Indications are that the club is now looking to improve at third base, perhaps leaving Luis Valbuena to function in more of a utility role. Here are the latest rumblings:
- The Halos are considering free agent Zack Cozart as an option at the hot corner, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (via Twitter). Though he’s a shortstop by trade, the market doesn’t admit of many obvious holes at that position. But Cozart isn’t just any shortstop: he’s elite at the position, repeatedly rating as one of the best fielders in baseball. With the legendarily slick-fielding Andrelton Simmons already locked in at short and top-quality Kinsler at second, the Angels could arrange one of the best-defending 4-5-6 trios in recent memory, helping to ameliorate any concerns with utilizing the aging Albert Pujols at first. Better still, Cozart — like the others — has also established a solid ceiling at the plate, though perhaps it’s not quite reasonable to expect the 32-year-old to keep up his .297/.385/.548 output from a breakout 2017 offensive season.
- Trade is also a viable option for Los Angeles, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (via Twitter) and Jon Heyman of Fan Rag (via Twitter). As has been noted before, the Angels are one of several teams with possible interest in Padres third bagger Chase Headley. Headley and others are more likely to be added, at this point, than is free agent Mike Moustakas, according to Nightengale. “Moose” certainly has more home runs in his bat than the others under consideration and is also a more youthful option, though his contract is expected to reflect that and he remains a questionable performer in the on-base department. There’s nothing imminent on Headley or new teammate Yangervis Solarte, Scott Miller of Bleacher Report notes on Twitter. (Solarte has not emerged as a target of the Halos to this point, it should be noted.)
- It also emerged yesterday that the Angels have interest in Todd Frazier, yet another free agent who could fill the team’s major remaining position-player need. Though it seemed at one point yesterday that the organization was nearing a move at third, it seems there are still several irons in the fire at this point.
angelsfan1522
I’d love cosart he’s more affordable than moose he will play third well and we will be able to add pitching as well
Maize
Pretty sure Cozart prefers to stay at SS, however, and he has justification given his defensive prowess. I don’t see him going to the Angels. San Diego is more likely, and maybe the Angels swing a deal for Chase Headley
ilovelamp
You’re probably right, but the SS market is weak. Angels can likely match any offer from a team like San Diego, and this pretty much his only shot at landing a major contract in his career.
More money, plus playing on what looks to be a competitive team with Trout and Ohtani would have to at least be considered.
But you may be right. Angels may be happy to take one year of Headley and then figure it out next year.
cssolis1
Would Cozart be good for the Angels

As an Angels fan I’ll take an above average defender and near average hitter at third base any day!

J. C. Hahne
Cozart would be wonderful if he is willing to play 3rd. Quite possibly the best defense in baseball all around. Any chance he could lead off?
ilovelamp
If he kept up his OBP from last season, absolutely. He also came in 15th in the baseball in pitches per plate appearance, directly behind Mike Trout.
And hitting in front of Trout would help anyone see good pitches to hit.
cmancoley
Where do you find quirky stats like this? Just curious bc I have no clue where to find in depth statistics
ron cey
yes. where?
CursedRangers
It feels as if the Angels are continuing to target and acquire players that are 2-3 years past their prime. Will be interesting to see how all these moves pan out. While they are improving, I still don’t see them having enough to overtake the Astros. And yes, I’m s Rangers fan but I’m not bashing the Angels. In fact I would be shocked if Texas finishes with a better record in 2018. Obviously a long way to go in the offseason.
brewcrew08
I’m a brewers fan and I would agree with you. Outside of Otani (who knows if he pays this year) the names the Angels have been linked to are guys on the wrong side of 30.

Well they are bridges to what the angels really are arrange come next year. Will have close to 100 million and 130 the following year. The pieces they aquired were low cost and predicated around high quality defense. Also worth noting that kinsler will rebound in that lineup with trout hitting behind him. Also angels if they sign cozart can slide him over to 2nd and make a run at machado if he reaches free agency. Angels are running a tight ship at the moment and are amasing talent in the minors and putting together a quality defense first team. 15th ranked farm with ohtani and maitan signings.
CursedRangers
I agree that Trout makes players around him better. But it’s not like the Tigers had anemic offensive players while Kinsler was there.

I don’t get how Upton and Ohtani are seen as “past their prime.” You don’t fill a team with 25 guys in their 20’s. That’s not how this works.
GeoKaplan
Not a *winning* team. Jeter will attempt to field a starting 9 of under-30s (probably under-25s) in Miami.

Good point.

The Angels went down a similar path a few years ago when they signed Hamilton, Pujols, and CJ Wilson. Fans were generally pumped about those transactions, and look at how they turned out.

With Cozart getting placed into the fold at third, the 2018 Angels would have one of the filthiest defenses in recent memory. Eppler is a D machine!!
lowtalker1
With no pitching
Lol
ilovelamp
This is a fun meme on here.
But if half of the pitchers who missed significant time this year can stay healthy in 2018, they have a lot of talent and a lot of depth.
And a 6-man rotation would likely help them stay healthy.
gstarrett
Agreed, they have 8 possible solid starting pitchers plus are still looking to add. Additionally, I don’t think people understand how much this legendary defense will help the pitchers.
ilovelamp
Absolutely true.
I’m also of the belief that having elite defenders 4, 5 AND 6 makes the whole infield defense better than the sum of their parts. No weak links makes the whole thing run smooth.
I’d be in love with this pick-up.
Joe Kerr
I have always believed that pitching and defense up the middle are extremely important. With Trout, Simmons, and Kinsler, they certainly have that. If I were the Angels, I would target relief pitching help. Their starters are good, offense will put up runs, they have good defenders, they will just need to hold onto leads late in games.
SashaBanksFan
Don’t forget about maldonado. You’re right about the importance of up the middle defense and its starts at the plate with the gold glove winner

With injuries, adding ohtani and getting back a healthy richards, heaney, tropeano and skaggs could be huge for them.
jordanjee
@imindless I agree. I’ll add to your point if Shoemaker can just be consistent and healthy. I wouldn’t go as far to say that he’s underrated, but he’s at least undervalued. Bridwell may also build off of his solid year.
ron cey
too bad espinoza didnt come through
GeoKaplan
Interesting. Cozart, on a two or more year contract, could be moved to second base in 2019, and still leave open possibility for free agent third baseman that year.
sprado1065
That’s exactly what I was thinking @geokaplan!!! I love what eppler is doing! Getting Kinsler for one year and maybe signing Cozart and the angels would have a lot of expiring contracts coming off the books! Eppler giving the Angels options for next years free agent class 🙂
GeoKaplan
Also, Cozart represents an insurance policy at SS if Simmons has to hit the DL, or simply needs a Sunday off in August. This would be no Maicier Izturis substitution. If Cozart is open to playing out of his preferred position—and I haven’t read conclusively that this is the case—then this is worth exploring.
StuMatthews11
I was thinking the same, in 2019 go hard after Nolan Arenado or Manny Machado, if Machado doesn’t get moved. Cozart, that dude is a super infielder. If Simmons needs days off, Cozart plays short.
If the Angels can get a Swiss Army knife utility guy – who can be 4th OF as well as backing up SS and 2B, they’re in a great spot.
Anyone think of a player like that other than Chris Taylor? … Maybe Solarte, surely he could play OF?
Dangerclose
Agreed, they have flexibility with Cozart. If they either don’t like Kinsler or he under preforms. Cozart could play second and shop for a 3rd baseman next year…

Nice sign Cozart for 3b, then go get Jarod Dyson as 4th outfielder.
angelsinthetroutfield
LOVE Cozart as a fit at 3B. Great glove, great clubhouse guy, improved BB rate, versatile. He adds a layer of depth that would go a long ways towards making a 3-man bench a possibility. If we can get him on board that eliminates the need for a UTY who plays SS. Cowart could probably handle the job freeing up $$ for pen pieces.
ron cey
i like this idea a bunch. a good solid reliever would benefit

MYTH #1: The Angels have no starting pitching.
FACT: The Angels starters all have health concerns. But there are eight pitchers in the organization who have had success as major league starters. There is no reason at this point to assume that Ohtani, Richards, Heaney, Shoemaker, Bridwell, or Ramirez aren’t fully healthy. And if one or two of them DO go down, Tropeano and Skaggs are waiting in the wings.
MYTH #2: The Angels are an old team.
FACT: They’re not. Pujols is 37, Kinsler is 35, Valbruena is 32, Maldonado is 31.. Otherwise, nobody on the 25-man roster is over 30.
jordanjee
Good point. Plus, Maldonado shouldn’t have as much mileage as other MLB catchers of his age since last year was really his first full season as a starter behind the dish. Which us Halo fans know how well that turned out!
And, it’s been reportedly recently that Kinsler is in much better shape than a typical 35 YO major leaguer. Needless to say, I’m not worried about the Angels being “old.”
ron cey
plus we have backstops in the wings
bastros88
all of their pickups are okay, not great. They will probably be the same place again this season.
StuMatthews11
Did you learn baseball yesterday? You may hate the Angels, but even ESPN is reporting that the Angels have had one off the best off-seasons in MLB. And Billy Eppler isn’t done. Sheesh.
bastros88
oh ESPN said they had a good offseason, it must he true. they just got a 35 year old 2nd baseman who’s past his prime who hit .236 with a .313 OBP, a two way player that has never faced mlb pitching, and got Jim Johnson coming off a terrible year. Explain what’s to be excited about here…..please do
laausc
Lets see a 5 war left fielder, a 5 war starting pitcher, a 3 war second baseman replacing a -1.5 war position last year, a relief pitcher that could bounce back … what’s not to like??
bastros88
The angels were 20 games back in the division, all those wins equate to nothing, maybe a wild card spot
bastros88
Ian Kinsler was worth 2.1 wins, not 3. So basically a 1.5 win 2nd baseman, is very similar to a 2 win player, so the angels basically did nothing but add on 11 million
CursedRangers
First, none of the big FA’s have signed this offseason. So if ESPN says the Angels are having the best offseason, it’s akin to getting excited to a team that wins the first series of the season. Sure it’s better than losing, but there is a long way to go.
Second, Kinsler has fallen off drastically. He stunk last year. Not to mention his is an ego mania that has rubbed a lot of teammates wrong over the years.
Ohtani is a absolute great pickup by the Angels. Hats off to them for being able to get him.
Just remember that the Angels won the offseason when they signed Pujols a few years ago. They also won the offseason when the signed Hamilton and CJ Wilson.
ilovelamp
Not sure why I’m bothering to engage, but here goes.
Angels were dead last in WAR at 2B with -1.3. If you expect Kinsler to repeat last year (which you clearly do), he’ll be a 2.1 WAR player. That’s a 3.4 win swing that only cost $11m and a nobody minor leaguer.
Angels were 16th in the league in WAR at LF with 1.7. Upton put up a 5.6 WAR, which is a 3.9 win swing. So far, we’re at 7+ wins added.
Angels were 20th in the league in WAR at SP with 7.3. Let’s say Ohtani is decent, but not elite. He’ll add 2 WAR to that total, with the possibility for more.
Now we’re at +9 wins over last year, and that’s before taking into account getting pitchers like Richards, Heaney, and Skaggs back healthy. No more Nolasco and Chavez putting up 0.9 WAR and -0.2 WAR, respectively.
Trout missed 6 weeks and still put up 6.7 WAR. He’s averaged 10 WAR each of the last two seasons, so let’s throw another 3-win swing on there.
We’re at +12 wins over the production we got last season. And we haven’t talked about Pujols being healthier than ever before or Ohtani’s offensive contributions. We also haven’t talked about who the Angels get to play 3B (Cozart’s 4.9 WAR would be a 4.5 win swing over the Angels’ production there last year) or what the solution at 1B is going to be (for example, if Valbuena doesn’t bat against lefties then his value goes way up).
Oh, and the Angels farm system leapfrogged about 10-15 teams.
The offseason isn’t over, and all these wins are just on paper. But clearly the Angels are a significantly better team than they were just a month ago, and Eppler is going to continue to improve the roster.
Maybe the Astros run away with the division and have to face the Angels in the playoffs. Or maybe the Angels have everything go right (or Houston has some things go wrong) and the division race gets interesting.
bastros88
I’ll admit, the angels are heads and shoulders better than they were last season, and with full health there is reason to believe that they can make the playoffs, but the same could be said about the rangers and mariners, plus the astros, are still the better team in that division. The angels might be able to get a wild card spot
imindless
@cursedrangers Dude you come across as an uneducated salty rangers fan in every post. You make false claims and uses prior players that have nothing to do with current players and culture. Angels have used shrewd moves to sign a decent crop of talent at low cost. No one is saying they are signing or trading for superstars, what they are doing is build toward the future. They have built up there farm and in addition to putting a better ball club on the field for 2018. Rangers wont win this division for some time just accept it.
imindless
Couldnt have said this any clearer!
ron cey
upton and potential
CursedRangers
You obviously haven’t read everyone of my posts. I stated earlier today that I would be shocked if the Rangers finished the 2018 season with a better record than the Angels. I also complimented the Angels for landing Ohtani. If acknowledging both of those is considered salty than your definition of salty is different than mine.
I’m just pointing out the fact that Kinsler is no longer a good player. Also pointing out the fact that the Angels have been down this path multiple times in previous years.
ryanw-2
21 if 25 players on their roster are under the age of 30. Every team needs a stop gap somewhere. And that usually involves getting a FA in their thirties. In this case it’s Kinsler. So what? Their lineup will be deep enough to not have to lean on him. And just a 2 WAR from him would be a 3 win improvement at 2B. Sometimes the upgrade at a position is relative to what was produced at said position in the previous year.
CNichols
Winning the offseason doesn’t equate to winning during the season. Case and point, San Diego 2015. Added Upton, Kimbrel, Shields, Kemp, and Myers and still finished in 4th.
I think the Angels are a better team than that, but just because they got Upton, Kinsler and Ohtani doesn’t mean they’ll automatically win, especially playing in a division with the Astros.
Ejemp2006
Upton and Kemp are both plagued with some sort of loser disease. They both just can’t seem to be a part of a winning culture, despite their great natural talents.

I hear Machado is available. Simmons, Kinsler, and Machado could be real strong defense. Word is Machado wants to go back to short but I think he’d be good with it on the Angels specifically. He already said he’s fine at third if he stays in Baltimore.
Dangerclose
As much as I would love Machado. Wait until next year and sign him. They should get Cozart and after Kinsler for a year. They could get Machado for third, Cozart at second and of course Simmons for ss. That would be an amazing defense and great team to go along with Trout, Upton and Ohtani.
