Let’s check in on a few notable international signings that have just gone down …
- The Yankees have struck agreements with two Venezuelan talents, according to Ben Badler of Baseball America. With cash still left to spend after missing out on Shohei Ohtani, the Yanks are moving to bring in another big haul of talent from Latin America. Outfielder Raimfer Salinas and catcher Antonio Cabello will join an already strong haul from the current July 2nd class. Per BA’s rankings, these two are the 11th and 15th-best players available, respectively, leaving the Yankees with five of this year’s top twenty talents.
- Another spurned Ohtani suitor, the Rangers, has found another investment opportunity with some of its funds. The Texas organization has added shortstop Osleivis Basabe out of Venezuela, Badler also reports. Basabe, who has a few family members already playing in affiliated ball, is said to be a quality athlete with excellent speed and a good arm. Though Basabe ranked as only the 46th player on the BA board due to questions about his hitting acumen, Badler says he has shown well in winter ball action.
- It seems the Twins have finalized a deal with Taiwanese righty Kai-Wei Teng. That agreement was first reported by LaVelle E. Neal III of the Star-Tribune and was noted as going in the books recently on Twitter by MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger. The 19-year-old is said to be receiving a bonus in the $500K range.

The Yankees have been great with Latin America international scouting. Sanchez and sevy being two recent examples of that

So is Aaron Judge. Didn’t he sign out of curaçao, or was it Cuba?

Can you provide the pronunciation key for that please?? I’m not too familiar with all those foreign countries, and their crazy, old-school pronunciations..
Although, I think I might have heard of that place in a song one time…Some band called the Red Flaming Chili Flakes…idk, but it was a pretty good song honestly..All I remember is something about a dream and fornication…but I’m sure you can Google it and find it..
tim815
Not sure how to pronounce it, but they have Fre sno in the State.

Hey, don’t joke about that. I’ve played Oregon Trail and let me tell you, the voyage to California is perilous. What Judge must’ve gone through at LAX and JFK would haunt us all.

Greg bird died of dysentery last season

Oregon Trail jokes aside, I wouldn’t put this past his frailty.

Happy they did something with the pool money they hoarded. I would say looking at the 14-15 period when we broke the bank most of those big money guys are shot or looking like marginal prospects. So today I’m happy we signed these guys with their high MLB.com and BA rankings, in 3 years we will know more. Jackson Melian sends his regards.

Most those guys are still 19 years old. They are just making their way into the system in rookie ball and A ball, playing in a league where they are 2 1/2 years younger than the average age. It takes time for these kids to develop. Florial will probably be in the majors in 2019. I think it’s way to early to call these kids “shot”
Polish Hammer
So for now they’re younger than those they’re playing against….until we find out their true ages and realize they’re actually older than their peers.

This isn’t 1997.

Florial is looking great, he also was signed for 10k so he’s not part of the big money group. I’m not saying the whole group is a total wrap but none of the big dollar guys are showing that well. We control them for a couple more years so hopefully they turn it around. The big money group isn’t playing above their age levels for the most part, they are lingering way down in the system. I think my assessment of them is pretty fair, who from that group that we signed for big money looks like a future big leaguer? Two guys ( Park #18 and Dermis Garcia #20) are ranked in our top 30. I’m all for signing every possible dude and using money to our advantage, I was merely pointing out the high attrition rate.
floridapinstripes
Florial was signed for 200k. Freicer Perez was signed for 10k. Both are also in the 2014 class. Perez is always overlooked.

Was beginning to wonder when the Yankees were going to spend some of the $3.5MM they had accumulated for Ohtani. Noe we see the start of it. They have till June 15, 2018 to spend it or lose it.

Cashman seems to have the right formula for building a team now with the salary cap. Build up through trades frist, draft second, and only use the free agent market to get the final pieces. I think more GMs are going to look to sign players who have stayed healthy in free agency if possible. You can’t win with players that aren’t on the field.
CursedRangers
It is the right formula. Also used by the Cubs & Astros, just to name a few. Free Agency should be used as a last resort
