The latest free agent rumors:
- A variety of organizations are still looking at versatile infielder Eduardo Nunez. Jon Heyman of FanRag tweets that the Red Sox, Blue Jays, and “possibly” the Yankees are among the suitors. Boston president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski acknowledged the interest, as Alex Speier of the Boston Globe was among those to tweet. The Giants have some ongoing involvement, too, but Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports (via Twitter) that San Francisco is “a longshot” to make a deal.
- In addition to a host of other teams, the Astros have some interest in outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, according to Heyman (Twitter links). The Blue Jays, meanwhile, have checked in not only on Gonzalez but also fellow free agent oufielder Carlos Gomez.
- The Nationals are interested in reliever Hector Rondon, Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post tweets. Washington isn’t the favorite to land Rondon, according to Castillo, though he does note that the former Cub is familiar with manager Dave Martinez and bullpen coach Henry Blanco. Both men were on Chicago’s staff through last season.
- The Rangers and Red Sox each have some degree of interest in free agent first baseman Mark Reynolds, SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets. They join a few other clubs with interest, as we covered recently.
- The Orioles have made offers to several free agent pitchers, per Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com. It’s unclear whether longtime Oriole Chris Tillman is among that group, but the team did make an unsuccessful bid to re-sign him toward the end of last season, Ghiroli reports (Twitter link).

I like the Astros not being complacent. I like they’re at least looking into cargo. I wonder if he’d take a 1 year deal assuming no one offers a long term contract

If Boston’s not getting Abreu (seems like the asking price is too high) and Santana is a lateral move from Moreland, then they should sign Nunez (who was great for them before the injury) to play third and move Devers to first. Or go sign Jay Bruce.
austincort47
Santana is by no means a lateral move from Moreland. He is a much better and consistent player
InPolesWeTrust
Agreed. Mitchy 2Bags was a great platoon players who was forced to play everyday due to the Sox fantastic moves working out exactly how they intended it…..Santana albeit 31 would be a nice get for the Sox
bosoxforlife
This is the move that I have been hoping to see. Nunez looks like he was custom tailored for Fenway Park and was, indeed, great before he was injured.
cxcx
Nunez and Bruce two players considered non-entities a couple of years ago versus Santana who has been very good for like the past 7 straight years.

In other news Yankees NOT tied to a player
Just kidding
Dodgethis
Wasn’t Nunez only good after leaving the Yankees? Yankees are terrible at player development.
Ichiro51
That is the dumbest comment to make. Severino, Judge, Sanchez, Montgomery, Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and more….Just because of Eduardo Nunez. I smell some Yankee hate.
Kylesamac
Jeter and Rivera can’t be counted toward current player development because it was a completely different organization then. They’ve gotten significantly better since they shifted focus lately. I still remember how the screwed up Joba Chamberlain.

If trolling, good job. If serious, seek immediate help.
Yankees have the best young home grown team in baseball. Not even debatable. Astros are 2nd, but Astros didn’t stand a chance against the Yankees in ALCS if not for the gun for hire Verlander move.

DD take to much time for sign JD, if he sign wt a other team we are in trouble
beard
Just give him that 200mil and hes yours 🙂
Seriously, I bet hes one of the last to sign, i.e. it will take Boras a while to fall down to earth
Jack hammer
Definitely do not want to waste money on JD no way is he worth what he will sign for.. I hope the Sox run, and run far from him
redsox 1976
Im wt you!! Hosmer at 1b, Hanley dh, Nunéz at 2b!! Sign Lynn and a RHP reliver!!
jrwhite21
Why Lynn? Why hosmer?
InPolesWeTrust
I do not like 7/210 at all…4 straight solid years with the 4th being a monster year is great but at 31, i don’t know….when are teams going to get out of these 7 year deals!

In other news, the Giants continue to defecate in their own hands.
dorfmac
Lol
jekporkins
No kidding. God help us all if Panda is starting at 3rd base on Opening Day.
GarryHarris
The Astros interest in Carlos Gonzalez surprises me. That means Marwin Gonzalez isn’t the full time LF and will continue to be the best super sub in the game.
cygnus2112
Good ole’ Whiff Reynolds still drawing interest which I say good for him! He’s closing in on 300 dongs and deserves the shot which hopefully he gets there and probably will this year because if he has a crappy season, he might not get another shot…

Expectation: “Blue Jays are checking in on _________” (pretty much everybody)
Reality: Blue Jays sign Chris Colabello and Tom Koehler.
jdgoat
Hey bringing back Koehler would be a good move
NoRegretzkys
Not as a 5th starter. Maybe how he was last year as a 6th or 7th starter and long man in the bullpen. My point was, they will check in on all the top names available in free agency, and end up getting past their prime base cloggers like Pearce and Morales.
NoRegretzkys
Or better yet, the old refrain “we need to get younger and more athletic” and who are the 2 names they are tied to most this offseason? CC and Jay Bruce. They do NOT need another strikeout or HR all or nothing, slow footed type hitter with average at best defence.
jdgoat
If Koehler is brought back, he should be in the bullpen, where he excelled in his time here last year
jimmertee
Except Atkins doesn’t want to pay the prospect captial price that would command a ready elite RFielder and they don’t want to spend any longterm money on FA’s.
jimmertee
Hey, I agree Koelhler would be a great add for the Jays as primarily a reliever but also a spot starter. His fulltime [successful] starting days are likely done.
jimmertee
As for the Jays checking in on everyone, I think that they like to figure out the market and then do nothing. After this season, I project most Blue Jays fans will agree with me calling for Atkins resignation. Professional scouting or the Mgmt of professional scouting decisions in the Blue Jays needs a lot of work.
The Jays need #1, #3, power RF, SS, 2nd base, effective 40% Catcher, shut down out of the pen lefty and a 3rd baseman to replace Donaldson at the trade deadline.
Perhaps they will catch lightning in a bottle and one of the rookies they have acquired will come through. They will start off well in 2018, but age and lack of talent and depth will likely make this a long season.
dust44
Please Cash don’t sign Nunez. Torreyes is fine for the utility infielder role. Plus Wade can play 2nd and SS so we got 2 dudes a R and L bat
