Major League Baseball officials complained “to the highest levels of ESPN management” after commissioner Rob Manfred’s fiery interview with ESPN Radio’s Dan Le Batard on Wednesday, Ryan Glasspiegel of The Big Lead reports. Le Batard took Manfred to task for the payroll slashing the Marlins have done this offseason under rookie owners Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter, and Manfred insisted (perhaps disingenuously) during their discussion that he was unaware the club would cut costs under its new leadership. ESPN spokesperson Ben Cafardo confirmed to Glasspiegel that MLB officials did reach out after the Manfred interview, though the exchange doesn’t seem to have fractured the two entities’ relationship. Cafardo passed along a statement to Glasspiegel from ESPN Executive Vice President, Programming and Scheduling, saying: “We have a terrific relationship with Major League Baseball and we’re in constant communication at all levels, so it’s not uncommon that we would discuss both issues and opportunities in the course of that communication.”
Even if the Le Batard-Manfred dust-up has led to resentment, ESPN and MLB are married to each other for the foreseeable future, as Glasspiegel points out. Back in 2012, the two reached an eight-year, $5.6 billion broadcasting agreement that runs through 2021. More recently, ESPN spent almost $2.6 billion to acquire 75 percent of BAMTech (formerly MLB Advanced Media). Further, with ESPN’s parent company, Disney, having agreed to acquire 21st Century Fox, ESPN will take over Fox’s regional sports networks. That puts ESPN in position to be the regional rightsholder for roughly half of MLB.
More on Miami and a couple more East Coast teams:
- Had one of the other serious bidders for the Marlins acquired the team, this winter’s controversial roster teardown likely wouldn’t be occurring, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. The runner-up, Jorge Mas, told Jackson he’d have retained Giancarlo Stanton, increased payroll from $115MM to $130MM and hired a new general manager. Fellow would-be owner Wayne Rothbaum would not have slashed payroll, either; instead, he’d have saved money by cutting “wasteful non-player spending,” including reducing executive salaries, a league source informed Jackson. Under Rothbaum, the Marlins would have tried to contend and improve their farm system – not one or the other. But both Mas and Rothbaum were outbid by Sherman and Jeter, who acquired the franchise for $1.2 billion. In doing so, they overpaid by roughly $400MM, a Marlins official suggested to Jackson.
- It’s “probably not even a remote possibility” that the Orioles will cut ties with closer Zach Britton in the wake of his ruptured Achilles, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com hears. Britton, who’s entering his last year of arbitration eligibility, would receive his full 2018 salary (a projected $12.2MM) even if he’s released, according to Kubatko. So, it’s more likely the Orioles will attempt to extend the Scott Boras client and keep him in the fold beyond next year, Kubatko suggests. Interestingly, there’s a small chance a healthy Britton could eventually return to his original role as a starter. The Orioles approached Britton with the idea earlier this year, and though he expressed a desire to remain in the bullpen, he “wasn’t adamant about resisting the switch,” Kubatko writes. Whether it would make sense to change Britton’s role has drawn mixed opinions in the organization, Kubatko details, and his injury may reduce the likelihood of it happening. Regardless of whether he starts or stays in the bullpen going forward, the O’s are hopeful Britton will return before the All-Star break, Kubatko relays.
- The Red Sox’s farm system has declined in recent years and currently lacks upper-level talent, making it more likely a high-profile addition(s) will come through free agency, Chad Jennings of the Boston Herald posits. The Red Sox could meaningfully upgrade their roster by trading one of their top pitching prospects, Jay Groome or Tanner Houck, but Jennings argues that they’re not in position to move either because current rotation members Chris Sale, David Price, Drew Pomeranz and Rick Porcello could depart in free agency in the next couple years. While Boston’s prospect pool isn’t in great shape at the moment, it’s worth mentioning that some of its recent farmhands (including Andrew Benintendi and Rafael Devers, as Jennings points out) have turned into more-than-capable majors leaguers, thus improving the Red Sox but weakening their farm. And last winter’s system-hurting trade that saw the Red Sox send big-time prospects Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech to the White Sox for Sale hasn’t exactly led to regret from Boston. Sale continued to serve as one of the best pitchers in the game in 2017, after all, and he’s eminently affordable for two more years.

Manfred is as bad as Bud Selig. They both make me sick. Manfred wants to speed up the game then goes with instant replay that slows the game down and it sucks

I just made banana pancakes.

Is Christmas Eve also national eat pancakes for breakfast day…I also ate pancakes this morning..lol But not banana ones..
Me, personally, I don’t get the whole fruit with pancakes craze…lol
I’m a butter and syrup kind of guy myself, wit a sidea of bacon..IMO, no better way to have them!!

I’m the same. Less is more. Nice and fluffy w a pad of butter and just a bit of syrup. I’m lucky as I can get the good stuff right over the border in Vermont. Usually not big on fruit either but My nephews were craving them, and they run the show most times.

You guys aren’t gonna believe this…. I BUT I ALSO had pancakes this morning. This is getting nuts. Oh… and the O’s ownership IS AN EMBARRASSMENT TO ALL!!!!! F*#*+$&@$CK!!!!

I suggest a chocolate syrup drizzle as a pairing.

ooh man all this pancake all this pancake talk is making me hungry. brb i’m gonna go run to ihop

instant replay is the best thing to happen to baseball since the wild card. We should he lucky to have Manfred as commissioner
bradthebluefish
Ditto
takeyourbase
I disagree. I miss the all human element of the game. I get keeping up with the times but I’d rather see managers blow their lid on a bad call a couple times a week than wasting time with replay. Even if said calls go against my team. Bang bang plays and tirades are part of the game that shouldn’t have been messed with imo. Fair or foul and homer or not, fine but I say leave the rest alone.
LADreamin
No. For many, many reasons that I’m sure others can point out. The one thing that I would agree with, life would be a lot better with more Lou Pinella style meltdowns. Making them more few and far between though makes the ones that do happen all the more sweet.
Sam.rhodes16
That was some real doublethink. “Way 1 is way better than Way 2, but I’ll just do Way 2 most of the time so that Way 1 is sweeter.” Asinine
rivera42
I feel that you should be in one of the new DirectTV commercials.
Some people like watching baseball without instant replay…then it cuts to your favorite team getting hosed on a horrendous call and you laughing hysterically about it.
Kayrall
ESPN is utter trash nowadays and likely will not be around sometime in the near future. That being said, Manfred is a liar and a sleaze who wants to milk this game despite the outcry from the loyal fans. I truly hope both parties get what’s coming to them, oh, and that Le Batard latches on with a REAL sports media outlet.
southi
Well as much as I’m not a fan of some of the changes at ESPN over the last few years I do hope that they are around for awhile. From my limited understanding Disney (which in turn means ESPN) is in the process of purchasing many, if not all, of the regional fox sports networks. After all we want baseball to be available to watch on TV.
elscorchot
Loria, strikes again! Haha.
Houston We Have A Solution
Marlins should trade Yelich, Realmuto, Bour, and whatever else they have. They should be looking to get players that are blocked.
Realmuto to the Rockies in a deal centered around Pint and McMahon
Yelich to the Blue Jays in a deal centered around Bichette and Alford
Idk what Bour would be worth but I am sure teams like the Rangers, Cardinals, Rockies would have interest. Rangers for instance could offer ronald guzman and mendez in a package
hiflew
I doubt very seriously you get Pint and McMahon for Realmuto alone. I could see the possibility of the two of them along with a couple of lower prospects going for Realmuto AND Justin Bour though. And even that would be pushing it for me. I would in the thinking of McMahon, Tom Murphy, Ben Bowden, and another low level player for the pair. Any more and I would pass if I was Colorado. Otherwise they could just sign Lucroy and get about the same production at C in 2018.
Jkolti
What planet do you live on where Lucroy is even close to as good as realmuto?
bastros88
calm down Lucroy had a bad first half, other than that he’s one of the best catchers in baseball
internet1tough1guy
Lmao this isn’t 2013 when Lucroy was really good. Bour is one of the most under rated players in the game. If he played on a decent team he’d put up monster #s. Not even a Marlin’s fan, and realmuto is arguably a top 5 all around catcher. Them 2 on Colorado would be freaking insane.. Rockies need another bat or 2. Outside of arenado n blackmon, and their 2nd baseman, they don’t have much there. Hopefully Dahl can stay healthy and he’ll help out alot
jeralves79
Lucroy has had 2 good years, far from reliable.
cxcx
Put Bour on a decent team…they had like the third most productive set of position players in baseball last year…
southi
Bour has little to no value right now. There are way too many similar limited skillset players available for cheap prices.
hiflew
Baseball reference is projecting VERY similar season from Lucroy and Realmuto in 2018. So I guess they live on the same planet as me.
hiflew
How many good years has Realmuto had?
hiflew
Considering Lucroy was 4th in MVP balloting in 2014 and was an All Star worth both Brinson and Ortiz in a trade in 2016, I think he has been really good since 2013.
Thronson5
I do agree the Marlins should just got full year down and get rid of any player that might be worth something. Get as many good young players back as possible and 5-6 years from now maybe they will be winning and contending with a bunch of young guys who aren’t costing a ton nixed with a few key veterans. Seems like that plan works better than some teams trying to buy a Championship.
mike156
I’m not sure I understand something. The final price was an overpay of $400M? But how much were the other bids? I agree the deal was ridiculous, but the market sets the price.
mike156
Should have said, what was Rothbaum’s bid? But point is the same. If Jeter’s group was overpaying by $400M, Mas was offering a $250M overpay. Rothbaum?
Caseys Partner
Can’t wait to see what other “small market” teams “do a Jeter” for the Yankees.
Still feels like the Pirates will “do a Jeter” with Cole.
Jeter himself is just holding onto Realmuto and Yelich until the Yankees need them.
JKB 2
@casey partner
There you go again crying and whining. Boo hoo.
rivera42
Haha, someone is salty. Miami had no leverage. Stanton dictated where he wanted to go(Dodgers, Yankees, Astros, and Cubs). Yanks pounced on it.
22222pete
Market sets the price? Do you even know what that means?
timpa
Well technically Jeter’s group overpaid more, but they are going to probably save a few hundred million in keeping payrolls low for the next 5 years. The other bidders factered having to spend $110m to $130m each year in salary into their bids.
MLB decided the highest sale price looks better and helps other owners, instead of owners committing to spend almost as much (or more) in payroll, but not have as big a number for sale price.
Wesly Marshall
I certainly hope when Britton comes back we can plug him into the starting rotation. We should have done it long ago. Forget about keeping him where he wants. It’s about Baltimore baseball.
CubsFanForLife
I don’t think Britton has enough pitches to be a successful starter.
soggycereal
and the ones he has won’t be as effective if he’s not happy with what he’s doing
Munsonmanor4
Problem I have is that if the final decision as to who got the team was only the bid, it’s a joke. I also don’t understand why Manfred expects to get slow pitch softball’s for questions. If he can’t handle Dan LeBetard, what is he doing in that position? The Marlins had Stanton just as much over a barrell as he had over them. They could’ve traded every player around Stanton and saved plenty of money and hopefully, have had a minor league system that should rival what the White Sox have now. They should’ve forced him to open himself up to more teams so they could get the actual best deal they could’ve. He may very well still wound up with the Yankees, but they would’ve got more.
THAT is where Marlins ownership failed the fan base of South Florida.
billneftleberg
That’s bull le batard never bought a ticket in his life. Always being comped as a member of the press. I live in florida, and fans just don’t support the team like they do in St louis, chicago, and new york..it’s a fact. le batard is a world class hypocrite.
How can a man who never bought a ticket in his life complain
jeralves79
They know he’ll be hurt again in no time. Marlins didn’t want to wait til he returned to normal form and no team would be willing to take his contract.
Mattimeo09
I wonder why Boston’s farm system stinks. It’s very similar to when Detroit’s farm system lost all of its upper level talent.
Now if only there was a connection.
anarchoburrito
HA. This.
Bruin1012
Well the Red Sox farm is down because they have graduated so many players to the big leagues.
Everyone that down on the Red Sox farm look at there everyday staring lineup nearly everyone has come from there farm system.
With the exceptions of pitchers they have traded almost all redundant talent. Guys like Margot, Asuage etc. were blocked and not going to get a good chance with the Red Sox.
A farm system is just there to feed the big league club some as players that are going to be on the big club others as trade bait for areas of need. I think it is important for everyone to remember this.
GaryWarriorsRedSoxx
I’m holding my breath for Pawtucket to win the AAA World Series championship.

Chris Sale Amateur Tailor
most of the account was just graduated to the majors and what deals would you pick to resind of the moves DD had made. I can only think of one the Thornburg deal outside of that he’s done a great job
rocky7
Do you really think he would pull the trigger on the Price trade again?
Bruin1012
It wasn’t a trade it was a free agent signing and given the same circumstances yes he would.
The Red Sox were coming off of back to back poor seasons and needed a big time starter and Price was that guy. Would he do with the ability to see what has happened so far probably not. The book isn’t closed on that deal yet let’s see if Price is healthy this year if he is then he is a top of the rotation kind of guy and him and Sale make a really good one two punch.
rocky7
Well I guess that in your opinion the “book isn’t closed”, but wonder whether if was your money would you feel differently….the Sox are spending lots of cash waiting to see the guy they thought they traded for, and he’s signed long term…..and he’s not exactly too media friendly, and he seemingly has an attitude as he doesn’t handle the press too well….and let’s not talk about the Eck incident.
Finally, he isn’t a top of the rotation guy in the playoffs as yet.
Bruin1012
The first year he pitched for Boston he pitched well in fact advance metrics says he pitched well. The second year he was injured. The reason I say the jury is still out is because if he pitches again like the pitcher he was in the first year or better then good for Boston. If he is injured and needs surgery then we’ll not so good and it will be bad signing. My guess is he pitches real well if healthy and may even opt out if he decides the press is not something he can deal with so we will see jury still out on Price.

Owners can do whatever they want with whatever that is they own including baseball teams it’s call private property. Marlins are not alone look at the A’s in 2014. They went for in all and lost. Big stars aka Cespedes, Moss, Donaldson er al all gone in a matter of days. Nothing happened after that. Nowadays they A’s are trying to compete again with a promising young core of players but the rebuilding mode is always there…
davidcoonce74
The Marlins are a private property? Hmmm, except they play in a taxpayer-funded stadium that relies on a taxpayer-funded infrastructure to operate. But besides that….
22222pete
Who owns the stadium?
SG
Yes, the Red Sox Farm System should be a top priority … “always”.
Chris Sale Amateur Tailor
I hate how everyone thinks that Dombrowski killed the Red Sox farm system. their loss of talent was guys graduating to the majors and the prospects he has traded away he’s gotten good return on in all the deals accept the Thornburg deal
driftcat28 2
No no, it was Dombrowski. He guts systems. Look at the Tigers. Look at the Sox now. In a few years he’ll be fired and hired else where and the cycle will continue. Possibly the most overrated executive
Bruin1012
Tigers had an aging owner who wanted to go for it all costs.
The Red Sox has specific needs that needed to be addressed with the farm. DD did that if Cherington was still here then people would be complaining about the Red Sox as prospect huggers and not going for it.
I think Cherington is the type of GM you want when you want to build a strong farm system and DD is the type you want when you want to win at the big league level.
Cherington was always looked as a prospect hugger and would not trade his prospects. If Cherington was here they would not have Sale, Kimbrel or most likely Price. The Red Sox, in all likelihood, would not of won the last two division titles. Sometimes hugging prospects is bad too. It’s a fine balance.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
The issue is the Red Sox basically have to win the WS in the next year or two for DD’s maneuvering to be worth it.
Bruin1012
There are no guarantees of winning the World Series it’s all about getting to the playoffs and anything can happen. I don’t have an issue at all I would argue they would not be in this position at all if not for the trade for Sale and Kimbrel. All you can do is put a team on the field that gets you to the playoffs and then from there see what happens. I think the Red Sox are built to win the World Series but still need some luck. The Yankees are also built to get to the playoffs and see what happens. You can’t win the World Series if you don’t, at first, make the playoffs.
jeralves79
Cherington also responsible for Sandoval and Hanley.
jeralves79
He got Sale and Kimbrel. 2 major team needs.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
And will be losing them in two and one years, respectively.
rocky7
And in our math that puts him at best 2 out of 4 lousy deals that have hamstrung the club for big money.
But the point of the article deals with the issue of whether the Sox farm system can be an asset in attracting new talent necessary to get them to the World Series or sustain playoff runs in the future.
It doesn’t matter that they won a Single A title….only that if their farmhands are assets, is anyone calling to trade for them?
Are they calling?
Bruin1012
The only deal that can potentially hamstring the Red Sox a little bit is the David Price signing if he needs surgery.
The trade you are referring too I am assuming Rocky is the Thornburg trade and that’s barely a blip on the financial radar. I’m really not sure what else you could be referring to as done by DD that is financially restraining.
Philliesfan4life
A shame the marlins had to sell Ozuna , Stanton and Gordon. All they were missing was pitching , and maybe a bullpen arm.
outinleftfield
3 starting pitchers, 2 bullpen arms, and about $100 million to pay them and Stanton, Ozuna, and Gordon.
No biggie.

So ESPN actually does a real interview with Manfred so MLB cries.
The fix is in. You will never see another real interview
skip 2
Yep!! If Mas owned the team they be contending net year!!
aff10
Obviously, Mas has reason to lie about that, but I don’t know that he wouldn’t have raised payroll $20M, so I’ll take him at his word. Even then, this team’s not a contender. If they sign Jake Arrieta (or some other non-Darvish FA), they’ve got a rotation of Arrieta, Straily, Urena…Jarlin Garcia and a bullpen anchored by Drew Steckenrider. They had some great position players, but this team wasn’t as close as some people make them out to be
outinleftfield
If Mas would have allowed a payroll of $130 million in 2018 and that is what he is quoted in the article as saying he would do, that is $10 million lower than the $140 million it would have been in 2018 if no changes were made.
mdunkel
If Manfred is worried about anything on that debate getting out he need not worry. I don’t know anyone who listens to Le Batard the hack. He think’s he is funny and just isn’t. I feel sorry for people like that. The only reason he is on is because he is cheap and fits in the ESPN low wages system.
outinleftfield
Other than SportsCenter, here are how the ESPN shows rank in viewership – PTI, First Take, Around the Horn, Highly Questionable, Sports Nation, Outside the Lines. Everything else is lower than those 6.
Thronson5
Britton back to being a starter would be a terrible idea if you ask me. They should worry about getting the guy healthy and extend him to a 3 year deal and then if they aren’t contending in the next year or two trade him. Would be better than just losing him all year to this injury then letting him walk in free agency and getting nothing from him.
bencole
First time ESPN’s done anything credible in years

If the deal is approved, Disney will own 80% of YES Network and have the rights to carry Yankee games through 2042.
Just one of the many factors that led Disney to pay $52.4 Billion for every asset Fox owned other than:
1) Fox News
2) Fox Sports 1 & 2
3) Fox Business
4) Big 10 Network
5) Fox Broadcast Channel

“ESPN will take over Fox’s regional sports networks.” – I thought I read somewhere that the deal does NOT include the Fox sports networks. Connor, are you sure?
xabial
You mixed up Fox Regional Sports Networks and Fox Sports 1& 2. Disney got 22 Regional Sports Networks from Fox, with the YES Network the crown jewel of RSN’s because of the 80% YES Stake and YES Network’s current TV deal contract with the Yankees, which expires 2042. YES Network is but one Regional Sports Network. There are 21 more Disney acquired. YES also carries Brooklyn Nets games.
Many of these deal terms go unreported, but here are Some valuable Fox Regional Sports Networks Disney acquired:
1) Fox Sports Arizona: Right to Broadcast Dbacks games through-$1.5B 20 year television contract– that Disney now has to pay giving them right to carry Dback games through 2035.
(Others.-Phoenix Suns, Arizona Coyotes, Phoenix Mercury, Arizona State Sun Devils, other Pac-12 Conference content look up the contract terms for each team yourself, Lol)
2) Fox Sports Midwest- (Cardinals $1B 15 year deal through 2032)
(Others-St. Louis Blues)
3) Fox Sports Ohio- (Reds $1B 15 year TV deal through 2032)
(Others- Columbus Blue Jackets)
4) Sports Time Ohio: Indians ($400M 10 year deal through 2022)
(Disney also gets 100% ownership)
(Others- Cleveland Browns: I felt bad looking up the contract terms)
5) Fox Sports West: Angels ($3B 20 Year deal through 2031)
(Others- Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Kings. Colligate content from Big West Conference, West Coast Conference)
forbes.com/sites/maurybrown/2017/12/05/how-the-rep…
Difficult to keep track of all the RSN’s Disney would add, and many of these terms are undisclosed. RSN networks were worth $20B+ in the $54B Fox-Disney deal alone. I omitted many college games rights above, and listed 5-6 RSN’s out of 22. The link above is ONLY one I found that helped understand which teams Disney got the rights to through acquiring 22 RSN’s.
xabial
Just Don’t forget !
1) Disney NOW HAS TO PAY these teams to carry their games
(Ex- They will pay the Cardinals $1B 2018-2031)
2) Disney will have to shell out more $$$ when these TV contracts expire (but some won’t for while like Yankees YES through 2042)
3) Fox Sports 1&2 completely different from Fox Regional Sports Networks. Think of FS1+FS2 as… the channels Fox trying their hardest to compete with ESPN….The one with Skip Bayless. All Fox’s Sports coverage, will now be there. We need Sports in our lives, Fox’s biggest mistake would’ve been selling Fox Sports 1+2.

This guy in the comments section on the Miami Herald website had the best take on the whole BS about some other owner not having to reduce payroll that I have read. I just cut and pasted it and didn’t make any changes, so I put it in quotation marks. It’s his words including formatting.
“Lets take a look at this realistically and not just as clickbait to get people to read the Herald.
According to Forbes, the Marlins had $206 million in revenue in 2017 with the smallest TV contract in baseball and attendance that was near the bottom in the league. According to an article from this newspaper, they had the lowest corporate and luxury box sales in baseball. Not alot of money coming in.
Now lets look at what is going out before they pay MLB salaries.
Their debt service payments are $60 plus annually. This newspaper estimated it at $65 million.
They have hundreds of personnel to pay on the baseball operations side including scouts, coaches, trainers, medical staff, etc… in both the majors and throughout their minor league system.
They have hundreds of minor league players to pay. Yes, the MLB team pays all major league players.
They have all their draft picks and international signings to pay.
They have hundreds of ballpark personnel. Ushers, groundskeepers, ticket sellers and takers, store employees, etc… After all of those people they have the rest of the people on this list to pay – miami.marlins.mlb.com/team/front_office.jsp?c_id=m…
So what can they reasonably spend on MLB payroll?
When all is said and done they can spend between $85 and $90 million they can spend on MLB payroll without the business losing money. Their 2018 payroll as the team stood at the end of the 2017 season would have been $140 million. A $50-55 million loss.
So why would any ownership in Miami have done the same thing Sherman’s Group is doing?
In 2017 the Marlins had one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball and no prospects in the upper minors to take the place of injured players. Their best pitcher had TJ surgery during the season and was out for all of 2018. Even if they had the money to spend, which obviously the didn’t, contending for the NL East title was out of reach regardless of which pitchers they signed in free agency. They had one of the worst farm systems in baseball so there were no prospects worth trading for top end pitching. If they kept the team together, they would still have not been a playoff team and their payroll issues would have been worse in 2019.
The bottom line was – They could not go to the playoffs in 2018 regardless of how much more they spent on free agents and the MLB payroll at even $140 million was not sustainable.
So the fact is that the new ownership had to lower payroll. That was a given. There is simply no way for an intelligent person to argue that they would not.
Had he remained the owner, even Loria could not have maintained the 2018 payroll. He would have had to trade away $40-50 million worth of payroll or taken that money out of his own pocket and as we all know, Loria was not keen on losing money. He would lie, cheat and steal before he lost money.”
The only thing I would add is that no company can afford to take a 25% loss in a single year. Not and stay in business. That is what a $50-55 million loss is for a team with $206 million in revenue. It doesn’t matter if they saved $200 million on the front end of the purchase of the team, they still had all those obligations for 2018 that come out of their annual revenue. So any owner that took over the team would have to reduce payroll until their new TV contract starts in 2021.
Caseys Partner
The Nationals TV deal is as bad as the Marlins with no end in site to it getting better.
The Nationals pay taxes on their payroll. The Nationals may be the only team in MLB paying taxes on their payroll in 2018. Not the Yankees, not the Dodgers, but the Nationals with no TV deal.
