12:57pm: Sherman has now tweeted the full list, reporting that the Yankees, Dodgers, Athletics, Padres, Giants, Rays, and Blue Jays are also teams to which Kinsler can block a move.
9:28am: It has long been anticipated that the Tigers will attempt to deal veteran second baseman Ian Kinsler, who’ll play for a reasonable $11MM salary. Indeed, the organization has made no secret of its intentions to hear offers to cash in one of its few clear trade assets.
As in the past, though, Kinsler’s partial no-trade rights could become a factor. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Kinsler has the right to block deals to three teams that seem to be quite sensible matches on paper: the Mets, Angels, and Brewers.
Indeed, the Halos may well be targeting Kinsler in particular. According to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick, via Twitter, the Los Angeles organization has clear interest and may even be prioritizing Kinsler as it continues to search for an upgrade at second. At this point, there’s little clarity on how Kinsler will utilize his rights, though Sherman does note that he seems inclined to okay a deal to Los Angeles.
Of course, it’s unlikely that Kinsler is thrilled at the prospect of spending the season with the rebuilding Tigers rather than suiting up for a contender. And he has seemingly expressed an interest in just that. There were past indications that Kinsler would seek to use his no-trade clause to gain contract inducements, though he also downplayed that consideration at the time.
Kinsler and Justin Upton are very close. He would definitely ok a trade to the Angels
Oh cool. Didn’t know you spoke to him and he confirmed that having one friend on the team will be enough for him to move 2,000 miles across the country to a place he clearly doesn’t want to play.
How do you know he clearly doesn’t want to play there? Did you speak to him and confirm?
Well the fact that they’re on his block list is a good indication
I’m not saying there’s zero chance, but to say “he and Justin Upton are friends so he would definitely go there” is an overreach.
His no trade clause is meant to gain leverage at his age.
Damn son you tried to be all smart and now you look dumb
This is literally why he went to the Angels.
Problem is that the Angles have a fairly weak farm system. Sure, Ohtani and Maitlen boosted their rating, but after that. not much. And sure these two are not going to Detroit in a Kinsler trade. Please Al Avila, look elsewhere to move Kinsler.
Sorry, it is Maitan, not Maitlen.
Jo Adell and Jahmai Jones are both solid prospects too.
Should be able to get Cesar Hernandez with Jordan Adell.
Kinsler is fried, he’s old. MLB has been trending younger for years now so this should be understood by everyone though it’s clearly not.
He’s not going to cost much in terms of prospects, considering his age and single season of team control. If he is indeed asking for contract inducements (i.e. more guaranteed money), the price is going to fall further. Throw in the fact that there is a glut of second baseman on the market, and I doubt LAA is sending one of their better prospects.
What’s the point of getting Kinsler? Do the Angels want to make the playoffs or not?
He’s been one of the best second basemen in baseball over the past decade, so I’m sure they’d be hoping for a bounce back at the plate. His glove was great as always last year, so he still has that going for him. Also, the Angels have had one of the sorriest second base situations in all of baseball since they parted with Howie Kendrick. Going from replacement-level to Kinsler (even a past-his-peak version) would be a significant upgrade.
In the PED era 36 year olds bounced back. Today MLB is juicing the ball instead of the player and a juiced ball doesn’t help an old player square up 95MPH.
Ohtani is not gonna have any effect on the Angels minor league system! He’s going straight to the big club!
You are crazy! Didn’t you see their draft class last year and the moves Epler has made to build it back up!
And by the way, I wouldn’t even consider giving them a top prospect for an aging mediocre 2nd baseman that will leave next season…
That’s old news. Their system has improved quite a bit in the last two years, to the point where there are finally reports floating around about scouts praising prospects like Jaime Barria and Jamhai Jones. Something that hasn’t happened in a while.
Unfortunately for Tigers, if a deal with LAA is coming, they’ve one of the worst farm systems. They traded Maybin last year to LAA for a “prospect” that DET just cut. Great deal Al.
Not cut, outrighted to the minors. Can do that once in a players career without his consent. So Alcantara is still in the Tigers system. Just no longer on the 40 man roster.
Do you really think one year of Ian Kinsler is gong to get you any notable prospects at all? He’s good but he’s coming off a down year, only one year on his contract, and there aren’t many teams interested in him. The tigers will take what they can get.
And managed to get Upton… Their farm system has improved. Read up!
Yankees! Discuss.
Package Kinsler and Fulmer to the Yankees and get some prospects to find a way to compete within AL Central in years to come. Cleveland owns it for the next 1-2 years and the Whitesox are coming too. Just sayin
Yankees wouldn’t want the $11M.
Yankees just moved Headley’s contract to the Pads, so they *could* do this if they wanted to. I don’t think it would put them over the tax.
Pitching is what they’ll go after, they’ll make a midseason deal if Torres and/or Andujar don’t work out. No way they go after a 37 2B, especially after just getting rid of Headley.
And no it wouidn’t put them over the tax, but they need flexibility to make adjustments midseason and not go over the line. Still have to sign at least one more SP before the winter is over.
Their 5 is pretty good now
Indeed!
Your not getting the angels top prospect for kinsler who is 35 on a 1 year deal and had a down year at the dish. Get real! Angels farm is vastly underrated, due to much unjust hate of the angels through out most mlb circles. One or two prospect in mids would be just fine.
I would rather the Angels bring back Brandon Phillips, than trade for Kinsler.
I would rather have the Angels bring back Joe Morgan. Dilly, dilly.
I hope the Angels get Kinsler. Instant clubhouse cancer.
If only I were 30 years younger and had exceptional athletic talent…maybe I could play for a “reasonable” $11M.
I blame my parents. It’s a gene pool thing.
Could make sense for the Red Sox… only need a 1 year stopgap while Pedroia is down. Gotta imagine they could get him reasonably… well, that is if Trader Dave doesn’t shoot himself in the foot anyway.
I was thinking this as well, when Pedroia returns, Kinsler could help at 1B/DH and/or just trade him in July.
In DD we trust.
Send him back to the Rangers and we’ll give you guys back the remainder of Prince’s contract and some of our finest BBQ. Deal?
How many 2B are available via free agency and trades? IMO, LAA should try to acquire Jonathan Villar. I’m not sure the Tigers will get much for Ian Kinsler:
DET Ian Kinsler
MIA: Starlin Castro
CLE Jason Kipnis ?
OAK Jedd Lowry
TEX Jurickson Profar
SDP Yangervis Solarte
ARI Brandon Drury
MIL Jonathan Villar.
F/A Brandon Phillips
F/A Neil Walker
F/A Ryan Goins
Dont forget Casear Hernandez in Philly
And Josh Harrison in PIT
Would the Angels be willing to trade Jahmai Jones or Matt Thaiss? Tigers are looking for position player prospects. On a side note, I believe Jahmai Jones is the brother of Detroit Lions WR TJ Jones.
If the Tigers ask for any of the Angels top 15 prospects, I would not make the trade. Kinsler at 35 coming off his worst season, isn’t worth a top prospect.
Oh god no. Not for one year of Kinsler. Go fish.
Glad Giants are on his no trade list. Do not want the guy at all.
Do not want the Giants at all. Lousy, lousy team.
Don’t know why Angels would want Kinsler. Much better options than him?
Kinsler for Odor. Even swap and re-sign Kinsler to a multi-year deal with the Rangers. Kinsler would be welcome back and an upgrade at second and hitting
This is sarcasm, right?
Seems like a lot of hurdles to clear for a one-year rental. Angels might wanna exhaust all other possibilities before wading into this swamp.
It sounds like he’s the Angels primary 2B target. And the Angels seem like the most likeliest destination right now for him.
I would rather have Brandon Phillips back or Neil Walker than Kinsler.
Walker is 32, fragile, and wants 4 years. He was towards top of my list earlier, but not on 4 year deal. He’ll have to come back to reality.
Hates California—it’s cold and it’s damp.
