The Brewers have designated righty Dylan Baker for assignment, per a club announcement. His roster spot was needed for the two signings the club announced today.
As had been reported previously, Milwaukee inked veteran righty Jhoulys Chacin and brought back former hurler Yovani Gallardo. With those two players joining the organization and Baker departing, the 40-man roster is full.
Baker, 25, was snatched off the waiver wire from the Indians in late November. He has thrown just 21 2/3 minor-league frames since the start of the 2015 season owing to Tommy John surgery. Clearly, though, there’s some interest in Baker’s future. He struck out ten and walked just one while allowing four earned runs in 12 2/3 frames at Double-A in 2017.

Not sure Gallardo and Chacin are very inspiring. Wonder what Brewer fan thinks?

Yo is low risk, medium reward..typical Stearns move. Chacin is solid for the back of the rotation to eat innings considering we don’t know how long Nelson is out.

Chacin could be a stud with better pitch sequencing. Google Chacin+Pitch Selection

Chacin was good in Petco and BAD on the road so I’m not looking forward to him in MKE. As for Gallardo, I have very low expectations and hopefully he finds his way into a bullpen role instead of starting.

So, does he go back through waivers again?
Brewers39
Yes. Any player removed from a 40-man roster must clear waivers if they are to remain with that organization. That’s how we got Vogt this past season. Oakland DFA’d him, we claimed him.
All 25 active players (in the majors) are automatically on the 40-man roster. That leaves 15 minor leaguers that are protected too.
Any players “claimed on waivers” must be put on the 40-man roster of the team that claims them. If we decide to claim any one else, then another player will get “designated for assignment”, which makes them available to be claimed by someone else.

Baker looked very good in his brief return to action last season, however it was over a short sample size. I’ll be interested to see how he follows it up.

Do most teams have 5 catchers on their 40-man?
Brewers39
Go to mlb.com, pick a team site, then pick the heading “roster”
ray_derek
They don’t is my point, it was an intended rip on a franchise that chooses to carry 5 catchers.
weber722
No. Most would have 3-4 but 5 is a bit much.

Brewer fan here….not crazy bout the yo signing but it is literally zero risk.
Chacin was right price. We needed another starter and I’m just glad we’re not the team to overpay on arrieta. We’re still stuck with Braun’s contract for another 3 years.

I would rather see a bad signing, like paying too much for Lynn or Cobb, than a bad trade, like a bunch of prospects for Archer. If a FA fizzles out, at least we only lose money. We can afford that right now. I would hate to trade a bunch of top prospects for Archer only to see him slide.

But when a team has an excess of prospects at a position, it behooves the team to make a trade. The Brewers could package one of Brinson/Broxton/Phillips/Santana/Ray and still be very deep in outfield prospects. They could include one of Burnes/Ortiz/Woodruff and still have plenty of pitching prospects.
Brinson/Otriz/Erceg (Erceg is going to be blocked by Shaw in a year) is probably enough to get Archer. Plus, keep Archer’s contract in mind. Two years, two option years, averages about $8.5M over the four seasons. That’s about half the money, it not less, it would cost for Lynn or Cobb.
