The Orioles have acquired outfielder Jaycob Brugman from the Athletics, per a club announcement. A player to be named or cash will go to Oakland in return.
Brugman, 25, was just designated for assignment by the A’s. He reached the majors for the first time last year, posting a .266/.346/.343 slash over 162 plate appearances. A generally solid on-base threat in the minors, the left-handed hitter has shown a bit of pop at times but has not always sustained it in the upper minors. Metrics did not view his work in center field favorably in 2017, though that was a short sample and scouting reports have generally suggested he’s a solid overall defender.

It’s certainly possible that the Orioles could allow Brugman to compete for a reserve/platoon outfield role in camp. He’ll play at or near the league minimum and might help the team save funds to dedicate to the rotation, which is clearly a more pressing area of need. The O’s have a variety of right-handed bats to work with already. Adam Jones and Trey Mancini are certainties to see regular time. Mark Trumbo will likely mostly function as a DH but could factor in the mix, while top prospect Austin Hays will receive consideration despite a tepid late-season debut. Reserve options on hand include switch-hitting Anthony Santander and right-handed-hitting Joey Rickard.

Them Orioles always making moves. At least they use cash and bonus money now to get these retreads instead of their prospects

I’m just curious to know if you know the difference between retreads and prospects? This 24yo will be 25 at the start of the season which means that the Orioles have just acquired another prospect. Maybe good maybe not so good but spring training and time will tell..
gorav114
You’re right, this guy is a prospect. One that wasn’t good enough to stay on the 40 of a bad team. So he’s not yet a retread, I spoke to soon without knowing anything about him.

Your cynicism got you a little smack down, but it’s ok, it sounds like you’re learning.

And some say this has been a quiet off-season.
ABCD
Maybe Dipoto can make a trade soon.

I love the “What did Jerry Dipoto do” jingle on the Ben Lindbergh podscast. BTW, I love your handle, “Kyle’s Mom,”

This could actually turn out to be a decent trade for the O’s but hopefully this isn’t the only LHH OFer they get this offseason.
MetalCrow448
There’s no room for another outfielder. Jones and Mancini are locks. If you have Hays and Brugman platoon, where do you put another?
emt tim
as an A’s fan I’m happy about this
Rounding3rd
With the unknown PTBNL? How does an A’s fan know it is A worthwhile trade?
AsNchill
The trade itself is kind of irrelevant. DFAing him allows us to protect a fireballing reliever close to the majors and a sinker balling starter close to the majors. The fact we got anything for it at all is kind of a win on our part.
justin-turner overdrive
lol Brugman and Joey Rickard on the same team. Orioles are worse for having both.
outinleftfield
Our season is saved! Hallelujah. I was afraid the O’s would not find another mediocre 4th outfielder to join an already crowded OF.
jimmertee
lol. Sarcasm heavy and hilarious. Orioles need ptiching. Bring on the starters.
julyn82001
No room in Oakland for this guy, unfortunately!

Holy Mother of All Things Sacred. DDDD (Dumpster Diving Dan Duquette) cannot help himself. Is it bad that I too feel a compulsion…to punch somebody in the throat?
This is a gut punch by DDDD, after which he jumps up and down while giving us Orioles fans the finger. Just not right.
The Natural
Just what the O’s needed. What ever you do Duquette–don’t even consider signing any pitchers. Who needs them?

FOmeOLS
This is exactly the kind of move the Orioles need to be making, good or bad, this guy costs almost nothing. If he’s unsuccessful, he can just take a spot at AAA, and if successful he could platoon throughout the outfield. No harm done whatsoever, good pick up.
Now, if this is the only kind of pick up the Orioles make this off-season, 2018 is going to be a very long year.
jbigz12
Jesus Christ we just snagged the guy for nothing.. Really not an opportunity to dog the orioles. Our outfield depth is questionable and I don’t think hays is a lock to make the team. He wasn’t very good in his small sample size last year. Other than that we only have Rickard and Santander as a backup outfielder. And Santander isn’t much of an outfielder. It’s a good depth move, better than wasting the spot on a guy like Tyler Wilson Vidal Nuno or jayson Aquino. Brugman will be in Norfolk most of the year anyway.
AsNchill
Glad we got something for him at the very least. It’s unfortunate, but both Fillmyer and Trivino put up good seasons, and pitching is our biggest concern right now.
FromTheJuicingEra
I refuse to celebrate until he passes his physical.

As always bottom of barrel

I am so tired of seeing his face in my feed. Christ it’s over now.
Draven_X_23
Oh thank God! Something for all the people on MLBTR to talk about like its a major move. I forgot about all the big signings, major trades, and all the other things that every other MLB team has done. Well other than the Braves stuff.
Minor league nothing deal. Whoop whoop.

Time to dust off the ‘Player to be Named Later Fan Club’ banner.
