The Marlins have reached an agreement with infielder Yadiel Rivera, as Rivera himself announced via his Twitter feed that he is joining the organization. Rivera elected to become a free agent after he was outrighted off the Brewers’ 40-man roster in late September.
Rivera, 25, was a ninth-round pick for the Brewers in the 2010 amateur draft and he appeared in each of the last three big league seasons, posting just a .434 OPS over 88 career MLB plate appearances. Hitting has never been Rivera’s calling card, as he owns just a .240/.287/.344 slash line over 3433 career PA in the minors, though he rose to the majors due to his defensive versatility. Rivera has been a shortstop for the bulk of his career but also spent significant time at second and third base.
Miami is already short on infield depth both at the major and minor league levels, and things could get even thinner if trade chips Dee Gordon and Martin Prado are dealt this winter. Rivera will give the Marlins some extra depth at least the Triple-A level, with JT Riddle, Miguel Rojas, and Brian Anderson all in line to get extra duty in the bigs, especially if Gordon and/or Prado are no longer with the club.

The Dynasty Begins……fire all the organizational people that anyone have ever heard of……what’s next we’re all gonna be treated to the Capt himself coming outta retirement a la ol tired Jordan as he mirrors the HOF player/boneheaded owner role….? It’s gotta be the shoes….!

Reading this gave me a headache

What he’s saying is that Ownership/Frat Geeks think they can invent the wheel, it’s a cult! Still need baseball minds

I know Marlins fans don’t want to hear this but this could be a pretty decent sign. He is a team player works hard and you never know he could be a diamond in the rough. He is still young. You never know he may figure it out like Villar did without the attitude. Honestly never understood why San Diego never took a shot on him.
bastros88
why wouldn’t marlins fans want to hear that
sdsuphilip
He has a career 585 AAA OPS and a career 630 minors OPS. Guessing that has something to do with why padres didn’t sign him

Everyone is writing off the Marlins like they have a long rebuild ahead but if they manage to trade Stanton and Gordon and keep Yelich, Ozuna, Bour, and Realmuto then they still have a good start to a line-up. Just need to find some pitching.

Kinda crazy if Dom Smith has fallen out of favor with the Mets already. Not even a third of a season big league Abs to judge him off of. I believe they should give mcmahon a shot at first before dealing him but I suppose the rockies don’t have a huge window for contention at the moment, or at least with Arenado and Blackmon. Brendan Rodgers and Mcmahon coming up could be a nice start of a core too though.

you know you’re right about it doesn’t have to be a long rebuilt the Brewers actually started rebuilding after Philadelphia did and yet they caught some breaks caught some decent players with lightning in a bottle and their back to contention already sometimes you’re not always going to find I’m a child but it’s not bad finding a PC McGee either

Contending can be so nebulous in baseball. The brewers almost made the playoffs but they could easily be a 90 loss team next year, even if they add.

I think nowadays these teams give up on players way too soon if back in the eighties the Mariners would have gave up on Johnson like they do players nowadays he wouldn’t ever became a 300 wind picture they got to show some patience sometimes
Phlem Johnson
Good career move for Rivera. He had no chance in Milwaukee with Arcia, Villar , Perez and Sogard all ahead of him and several good young prospects in the minors about ready.
