The Red Sox have now captured consecutive AL East titles with identical 93-69 records. Boston’s success continues to be spurred by the homegrown core of position-player talent compiled by prior front office administrations. But that’s not to say that president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski hasn’t had an impact. In particular, many key members of the pitching staff have come from outside the organization, quite a few via recent trades.
Here’s how every member of the Red Sox’ 2017 ALDS roster was originally acquired:

The bulk of Boston’s roster remains under control beyond the present season. Most of the team’s players that will head to the open market — Reed, Fister, Nunez, and Davis — were picked up during the current season. Moreland is the only other player to make this roster who’ll depart via free agency. He’ll be joined by outfielder Chris Young, who was perhaps the most notable omission from the postseason unit.
ReverieDays
Just the kind of boring team nobody thinks will win that will win the whole thing, ugh.
jdgoat
They’re probably the worst team left, and that’s saying something about the quality of teams in this years playoffs
triumph13
Agreed. And if nothing is done, all of these guys will be back next year…. and at best they can look at another early playoff exit.
They need to make changes for sure… JD Martinez? Arrieta? Trade some of their young ML talent for a power bat?
Brixton
They all owe Ben Cherrington a big thanks
empiresam
Yes and no. While many home grown were his moves, so we’re a few big money items that haven’t worked out and that money could have been used elsewhere. Not trying to take away but rather just making sure his full resume is looked at. He got fired in my book because of his big money choices.
anarchoburrito
Except for he got demoted and quit, not fired.
go_jays_go
@anarchoburrito
saying that Cherington was demoted and quit is tantamount to firing him.
the only difference is that Cherington doesn’t receive severance.
empiresam
Forced demotion knowing he wouldn’t accept= leaving but trying to save face. Fortunately for him, he was able to afford it. Many in the normal world can’t and get humiliated by having to stay. Ben will be back somewhere. Good evaluator of young talent.
go_jays_go
Cherington was promoted to GM after the 2011 season, which eliminates the bulk of the home grown players.
So really, his good moves were the non-moves.
ie. he didn’t trade away the prospect pool to ‘win now’
brucewayne
One small error on the Joe Kelly trade! He was traded to the Sox with Allen Craig from the CARDINALS
empiresam
Correct. Also Hanley deserves an * as he was home grown and traded to the Marlins in the trade that brought the team the 07 WS trophy (Beckett and Lowell).
WalkersDayOff
Hanley is not home grown. A 2nd stint with the club eliminates the home grown element
Ken M.
Where exactly was he “grown” then? I can only find minor league rehab assignments with the Marlins.
empiresam
I still say an * is appropriate at a minimum. They found, signed and developed him. He also wasn’t released but was traded in a high profile trade that was great for both teams. The way trades are supposed to work out. LOL to think Lowell was a financial dump. He was so good that year that Youk was forced to ride the pine for the NL home games with Papi at first.
DL0806
Doesn’t matter… he’s an a+ talent with a d+ attitude… what a career he could’ve put together if he didn’t have his head up his rear for most of it. We’d be screaming at this bad signing if it didn’t live in the shadow of the Sandoval debacle.
empiresam
True enough and both were Cherington signings along with Castillo who likely will replace Young as the 4th outfielder next year. Expensive bench outfielder.
rememberthecoop
Theo responsible for several guys, inc Betts & Bradley
Realtexan
Go Astros beat the Red Soxs
nelsoncruz23
Copy that, bummer orioles didnt make it. Still can root against Boston and NY.
redsoxrob9418
I get tired of GMs with lots of money to spend like Theo, Cashman etc… being spoken about as if they are geniuses any average joe with a couple hundred million could make trades and sign quality players my hats off to teams that have made it to the post season without spending as much as the dodgers, Yankees, and red Sox
Justink1996
name the teams that have then then
triumph13
KC and the Mets last year, Indians this year to name a few…
