Currently in the last year of his contract, Yankees manager Joe Girardi has been noncommittal about his future in recent weeks. On the heels of a rough few days for Girardi, ESPN’s Buster Olney says he expects Girardi’s time as the Yankees’ skipper to conclude at season’s end (podcast link). Of course, things are beginning to look quite a bit different than they did after a baffling Girardi decision that likely cost them Game 2. Now, the ALDS is tied and the Yankees could well find themselves among the last four teams standing, depending upon the outcome of the decisive game in Cleveland. Regardless of how things play out from this point forward, the long-experienced skipper will surely land on his feet, though Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes that some believe Girardi may be interested in some time away from the grind. Interestingly, the Mets have actually talked about Girardi as a possible successor to the ousted Terry Collins, but they “fully expect” him to stay in the Bronx, Mike Puma of the New York Post tweets.
More from the eastern divisions:
- Braves director of baseball operations Billy Ryan is a candidate to take over as their general manager, along with the previously reported trio of Royals GM Dayton Moore and Nationals assistants Doug Harris and Dan Jennings, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. However, according to the Nationals, the Braves haven’t yet requested permission to interview anyone from their organization (Twitter links). Of course, no matter how the Atlanta organization proceeds, it has more questions to answer than who’ll take over for resigned GM John Coppolella. As David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes, some in the game anticipate the league will uncover broad malfeasance by the organization. There are quite a few remaining questions, writes O’Brien, for a club that now has to operate with care to get back on the right track.
- While the Marlins are now formally transitioning to a new ownership group, there’s still some potential work to be done before Miami-Dade County and outgoing owner Jeffrey Loria go their separate ways. As Douglas Hanks of the Miami Herald reports, there could be a battle brewing relating to the publicly-financed ballpark deal that brought Marlins Park into existence. The local authorities have already lined up an auditor to review Loria’s group’s assessment of money owed to the government under the financing deal, which seemingly has some room for interpretation as to how much of the sale proceeds must be shared by the ownership group.
- The Mets and Nationals will both undergo some changes at the highest level of their farm systems, as Mark Weiner of Syracuse.com writes. The New York organization has agreed to buy the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs, which previously had an affiliate agreement with the Nats. It’s not clear at this point where the Washington organization will end up parking its Triple-A club in the future, though the change evidently will not take place until after the 2018 season.
pinballwizard1969
Seriously there is NO chance of Girardi going to the Mets.
lowtalker1
Though it says no mention of the Mets
Why not? Yogi managed the Yankees and the Mets
majorflaw
“Yogi managed the Yankees and the Mets.”
As did Torre, Stengel and Green. Not all that rare, actually.
lowtalker1
I was making a point
Why can’t he manage them? Does it really matter
majorflaw
Does what really matter? I wasn’t suggesting that Girardi can’t manage the Mets. I’d be quite surprised if the Yankees let him go, but Queens is as likely a place as any for Girardi to land if they do. Coaching and managing personnel have moved both ways over the years.
lowtalker1
All of that is referenced to pinball that says he couldn’t
jwoodham58
Why would Girardi? want to take a demotion and coach the mess that is the Mets
majorflaw
I can think of ~two million reasons a year for him to do so.

Cardinal’s managers include these HOFers:
Charles Comiskey
Tom McCarthy
Roger Comor
Kid Nichols
Roger Bresnahan
Miller Huggins
Branch Rickey
Rogers Hornsby
Bill McKechnie
Billie Southworth
Frankie Frisch
Red Schoendienst
Whitey Herzog
Joe Torre
Tony LaRussa
Let’s add Girardi
majorflaw
Not gonna check your entire list but Comiskey never managed the Cardinals. He did manage the St. Louis Browns, however.
ABCD
The Cardinals were called the Browns in the 1880s. I know because I was there.
Geebs
The cardinals were never called the browns/brown stockings, a pre mlb (NL) team that were members of the NAPBBP, they got caught up in a game fixing sting, got booted out in 1877 and moved to an unaffiliated league, in 1881 they went bankrupt. From everything I can find it looks as though they are to the Cardinals as the Nationals are to the Senators, in other words not connected really.
ABCD
There was another major league in the 1880s called the American Association. That’s where the Browns (today’s Cards) came from.
hiflew
When did Girardi become a HOFer?
ABCD
If he manages another WS champ, he will be considered.
mikeyank55
Joel Sherman a Mr Met. He makes up stories like many of their fans. He had a perfect role when the paper had many top writers and he was at the bottom. Not so anymore.
rct
His speculative stuff has been horrendous for 15+ years. He is good at getting scoops and fast information, however.
xabial
I don’t understand why Joel Sherman, finds a way to write these depressing articles in these happy times. (for Yankee fans) The worst part is this is a NY newspaper. Please if you’re a Yankee fan, read the DailyNews, NYTimes, for NY newspaper PROUD to REPORT Yankees.
Worst part is this fool, doesn’t discriminate. (But Mets are easier prey)
Even Girardi himself said he doesn’t know what his future holds, and he’s OK with whatever happens. Should’ve known that would be enough for a Sherman hit job.
Yanks historically NEVER EXTEND their managers/coaches/GM and seldom make exceptions even for players. An antiquated policy but there’s precedent for re-signing Girardi. Not to mention, last time Girardi re-signed Yanks had just missed the playoffs, (Still Outbid the Cubs and gave Girardi his first ever four year deal). This time they made the playoffs!
FYI Girardi increased the chances of him coming back by winning 2 straight elimination games. But You won’t see Sherman anything on that. He specializes, in stirring NYY controversy in his articles, often when NYY morale is at an all-time high
JKB 2
Zero chance? Really? Tell us why oh wise one.

So are the Mets dropping Vegas as their AAA team?
hiflew
Makes sense. There is no reason to have a AAA team all the way across the country. If you need a quick call up, your player is at the very minimum going to be jet lagged. A 2 hour drive from Syracuse is much better than a 3 hour flight from Vegas.
NJYankeeFan
4.5 hr drive from Syracuse to Queens (traffic not withstanding) and its a 5+hr flight from Vegas to NYC. They’d still be flying if called up in a pinch. But it’s simply an hour and 15 min flight and there are quite a few a day between the two cities.
hiflew
Fair enough. I simply meant that a AAA team in the same state makes far more sense than having one on the other side of the country.
rct
Don’t forget that it’s cheaper to fly from Syracuse to Laguardia than Vegas to Laguardia.
jakec77
It’s actually not.

+1
mikeyank55
Yes but Mutt and Jeff just negotiated a deal with Grayhound bus for free transportation anytime they call a player up.
It’s an overnight bus with stops in Cooperstown and Albany and players will be dropped off at Chitfield directly by 11:00 am the next morning.
Sandy commented, “This is a true
Partnership between two great organizations. We get free tranportation and greyhound gets visibility as they are rebuilding their core with new users.”
ukJaysfan
The Jays were thrilled to get out of Vegas and take over Buffalo. Proximity was the primary reason, but inflated PCL stats and the most favourable park in the PCL made evaluations difficult for them.

Contracts runs out
The missions are currently the padres double a team
End of 2018 season they become a triple a team for another organization I think it’s the brewers
Things happen
Teams change locations all the time. Could be with location, park isn’t right for them, contract with city disputes or they want a different location.
mlbtrrtblm
Yeah, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox are relocating to San Antonio after the 2018 season. They’re currently aligned with the Brewers, but will almost certainly sign a contract with one of the Texas teams (probably the Rangers, with the Astros leaving Fresno to then sign with Round Rock). The San Antonio Missions AA team is moving to Amarillo (currently no team there) after 2018. I believe a Low A or short season A team is moving to Colorado Springs.
hiflew
Yes, the Helena Brewers are moving to Colorado Springs after 2018 as well.
lowtalker1
Yeah I knew that
Just crazy how things can change
Go to El Paso triple a padres
Their contract runs out in 2018 as well
padam
New stadium being built in San Antonio for the triple A team. Also, closer to the city.

Mets took Kevin Long when he was fired by the Yankees. They’ll take Girardi (if he’s not retained)
It’s the Mets way. I think they take “Yankee-leftovers” (lack of a better word) hoping to share the Yankees success.
Unsurprisingly, Mets are rumored to be in on Pitching Coach Dave Eiland, who Royals parted ways with this year after they hired him in 2011, (Yanks pitching coach 2008-2010, Yanks fired him 2010)
Mets need more help than ex-Yankee coaches with the pedigree, and I’m a huge Joe Girardi fan, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Girardi was the #1 target, should NYY decide not to tend Girardi a new contract.
lowtalker1
Not always true
I can think of several times the Yankees have taken the Mets left overs
Example? Strawberry
thegreatcerealfamine
Strawberry by way of how many teams and other players things?
thegreatcerealfamine
^^and other things.
emasino69
Cone, Gooden…….Gooden’s no hitter hurt the most.
mlbtrrtblm
The Mets had Mel Stottlemyre in the 80’s before the Yankees did.
They took Long because he’s a good coach (gets a lot of credit for turning Daniel Murphy around, among others). The interest in Eiland is more about his pedigree (two World Series winning pitching staffs) than his ties to the Yankees.
I personally don’t think they’d be very interested in Girardi if he were to become available, but he’s a guy with a lot of NY experience, and that does carry some weight, because not everyone can handle it.
I think your post is a stretch.
costergaard2
Keep in mind that Mel pitched for the Yankees from ’64 to ’75, he never won a ring with them until 1996…
mikeyank55
Hey MLB mumbojumbo: KLong may have turned around (slightly) Daniel Murphy however his career flourished once he was outside the Flushing penetentiary.
The guy that should get credit for Murphy’s greatest turnaround is Sandy. He turned a budding player into a perennial all-star and at times MVP candidate for another team.
Bravo buddy.
mlbtrrtblm
Are you okay? You sound angry.
mikeyank55
I’m smiling from ear to ear. We’re rebuilding without tanking. Most predictions were no playoff appearances until 2019. We’re playing with the houses’ $$ at the moment as our young players gain experience.
Mets fans have returned to their quiet times. One’s that defected in 2015 are being reminded that you can’t be fans for both teams and being wished good luck as they are not welcome to be front runners.
How about you? How did your team fare?
radioball123
Girardi to the Cards
CharlieHotel
To do what? Backup Contreras?
Polish Hammer
Girardi to Miami and Mattingly to the Yanks.
NJYankeeFan
No thanks. I’d rather have ARod lol
Adam6710
I’m curious how A-Rod would perform as a manager. Give him a bench job, or a minor league job somewhere. Everyone who knows says he has one of the sharpest baseball minds– I’d like to see that assertion tested.
radioball123
Girardi to Detroit
thegreatcerealfamine
Yes former Yankees coaches have been employed by the Mets organization and former Mets have worked for the Yankees in the past. This is the 2017 Mets ownership/GM so why in the world would anyone actually believe Joe would sign with them?…this org has been a circus for awhile now. Remember where Joe is from and what his dream job would be and another Joe currently occupies that job. Perhaps Girardi doesn’t resign with the Yanks…he could wait for that other job to open up.
driftcat28 2
It would really suck if Girardi left. He’s the right guy to lead the team. Sure he blew game 2 but looking past that one game he’s done a hell of a job
Dynasty
Girardi is a top 2 manager in baseball along with Francona. They don’t do things by the 100 year old book. They aren’t afraid of a bullpen game, use the best relievers in high leverage spots instead of the 9th, play all shifts, play all matchups, a very mechanical and sabermetric-friendly, etc. They do what’s right even at the risk of a backfire. They don’t play by the old outdated book and hope it works just so that, should it fail, they can fall back on “well this is how things were done the last 100 years.” Most managers don’t have the courage to do the right move if it’s non-traditional. We’re complete and utter fools if we don’t try to retain him. If he chooses to walk, that’s his right, but we should attempt to keep him.
Macho King OG
I think Girardi and Cashman have three to four year deals ready to be signed at the end of the season not matter how the playoffs end, if they choose to return. Hal doesn’t like to change for the sake of change. I think both will be back next year to continue on this incredible run.
