It “would appear” the Red Sox will be involved in the chase for Diamondbacks outfielder J.D. Martinez if he hits free agency in the offseason, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes. As Cafardo points out, there’s a connection between Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski and Martinez, whom the former plucked off the scrapheap when he was Detroit’s general manager in 2014. Now one of the premier hitters in the game, Martinez would provide some much-needed punch to a Red Sox club that’s lacking in the power department, though it’s unclear where he’d play in Boston. On paper, the Red Sox look set in the outfield for the next few years with Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi and Jackie Bradley Jr. in the fold.
More rumblings from Cafardo:
- Indians first baseman/designated hitter Carlos Santana is another free agent-to-be who’s likely to land on the Red Sox’s radar, per Cafardo, who also names the Mariners as a probable suitor. Considering their positions, the switch-hitting Santana would seem to be a more natural fit than Martinez for Boston, which has gotten subpar production at first from impending free agent Mitch Moreland this year. Meanwhile, Mariners first basemen ranked last in the majors in fWAR (minus-0.7) during the regular season. Their top option, Yonder Alonso, could depart in free agency, which may lead to a Santana pursuit.
- The Cubs could be a team to watch if the Marlins shop right fielder Giancarlo Stanton in the offseason, Cafardo suggests. It’s unclear whether the Cubs would have interest in the potential NL MVP, who’s due $295MM through 2028 (if he doesn’t opt out of his contract after 2020), but they have plenty of players the Marlins “would love” to acquire, notes Cafardo.
- Royals GM Dayton Moore will only head to Atlanta if the Braves give him complete control, according to Cafardo. That jibes with a previous report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale and suggests that president John Hart would have to exit for a Moore-Braves union to come to fruition. Hart isn’t planning on leaving, however, Cafardo reports. Two members of the Nationals’ front office – assistant GM Doug Harris and the previously reported Dan Jennings – as well as ex-Red Sox GM Ben Cherington (now in Toronto) are on Hart’s radar as he seeks a replacement for John Coppolella, Cafardo relays.
- Yomiuri Giants right-hander Miles Mikolas is eyeing a return to the majors, and if he does opt out of his contract in Japan, it appears he’ll draw plenty of big league interest. Fourteen major league teams scouted Mikolas’ most recent starts, and there’s a belief among some that he could be a capable mid-rotation starter if he comes back, according to Cafardo. Mikolas, 29, logged 37 appearances (10 starts) with the Padres and Rangers from 2012-14 and recorded a 5.32 ERA, 6.1 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9. He has been stellar with Yomiuri since 2015, though, with a 2.18 ERA, 8.0 K/9 and 1.5 BB/9 across 62 starts.
- The Tigers decided before the season ended to part with manager Brad Ausmus, but he told Cafardo that he wouldn’t have returned “even if they had offered me a three-year deal.” Ausmus didn’t believe he was the right match for a Detroit team in the initial stages of a rebuild. On potentially managing someplace else, he said, “I’d have to study the situation and see if it was the right fit for me.”

Not a chance Stanton comes to the Cubs.
CharlieHotel
They are at least one of the few teams who could afford that silly contract. But I agree with you, no way Theo/Jed make a deal like that.
Michael Birks
They gave Adrian Gonzalez $210 million, and traded Anthony Rizzo in the process
Ken M.
No where near $210M.
empiresam
Not much of a difference in dollars given this is 2017 and also in today’s game the player is worth much more then he was in 2011. That said, most teams are wary of giving very long contracts to non starting superstar pictures and it is going to be interesting to see if Machado and Harper get the length of the contract that they are seeking. Also at the time, Boston was in dire need of a 3 hole hitter.
redsoxu571
It was $160M for 8 years (counting the upcoming year that wasn’t part of the extension), which is hardly backbreaking money for an intended star middle-of-the-order hitter who performed largely as expected. You can’t exactly get on the team for trading Rizzo either, as he wasn’t anything close to an elite prospect at the time (somehow AFTER his minor league breakout the Padres managed to lose him in a bad trade, which is much, much worse).
jmi1950
Casey Kelly was the big name in the A Gon trade. He blew out his arm. Rizzo was a throw in.
empiresam
What is $20M per six years ago like now, $27 – 28M? Kelly was the biggest name but Rizzo was no throw in either. Agreed that the Padres ridding themselves of him is worse but that’s baseball. Players sometimes take longer to develop than the team. is willing to wait and in other cases, the locked up player does nothing. On another front, I wonder if the MLBPA would get involved if the Red Sox and David Price work out a buyout wherein he then triggers his player option after next year. Should be legal since he hates the City so much.
empiresam
In fairness, here’s a shout out to David Price for an amazing performance Sunday. Strange how he has always come up small as a playoff starter but huge in relief.

Sorry, but it’s on the internet, so there is a chance.

Don’t you mean that if it is on the Internet, it’s true?

JD fits in Boston if DD thinks Hanley can be the primary 1B. JD (who has a neg war as an OF) would fit as the primary DH and 4th OF.
rocky7
Do you really think that a 30 year old player, coming off one of his best offensive seasons, is ready to basically put his glove in the back of his locker and become a full time DH, and 4th outfielder just because its the Red Sox.
This guy isn’t a gold glover but not sure he doesn’t want to be in the field any longer at all and he won’t see much time in the outfield unless one of the primary outfielders gets hurt. And he has no experience at 1st base which would actually give Hanley the defensive edge. Embrace that horror.
Just Saying!
SundownDevil
Yes, because the Red Sox are obsessed with sabermetrics as well and need JDM to have a positive WAR, so as long as he doesn’t play defense, his WAR a will be even higher.
mikeyank55
It will work perfectly with Hanley at 1B until game 2 when he suffers a mysterious shoulder injury and demands to be the DH. Hanley always brings his “A” game, “why did they give my DH job to that guy?”
jmi1950
Sox do not want Hanley to get more than about 350 AB’s next year otherwise his 22MM option for 2019 kicks in.
deal1122
Honestly though, who wouldn’t want to make millions go out and DH every day instead of playing in the field?
JKB 2
Just about everyone deal1122. Players want to play. Not DH. Also Many players hit better in the rythm of the game and just being a DH hurst many players as they cannot handle just hitting. Its not easy
deal1122
Ortiz seemed to hit just fine

Money usually talks.

If they sign Martinez they would likely trade Bradley for a back end starter and move Benintendi to center. Bradley has a nice glove but too inconsistent at the plate. He is at his peak now so they should get what they can for him.
redsoxu571
Bradley may be an inconsistent bat, but what makes you think he’d be worth “a back end SP”. That’s a silly claim. The guy has settled into a 3 WAR FLOOR with the upside to crack 6 and is in his prime.
redsoxu571
Boston just came off more than a decade of looking at David Ortiz as a legend; you think someone like JD Martinez wouldn’t have noticed that? Yes, I agree that Martinez should not (and would not) be willing to take LESS money due to giving up the glove in Boston, but if the pay isn’t being affected by his position why would he care? If anything, DH would mean he wouldn’t fall out of favor and lose at bats due to fielding issues as he ages, and he might stay healthier over the long haul (meaning more seasons which equals more money, and perhaps with that better health better hitting, which would equal even more money).
I have zero idea whether or not Boston would be the place Martinez would want to go to, but I see no reason why a DH job would be a turnoff for him.
mikeyank55
The only problem is that JD has ZERO interest playing in such a rough market. Between the fans and the press, Boston is a tough place for guys like that to play because they are not so thick skinned.
Remember Carl Crawford, Pablo and Adrian Gonzales who all couldn’t wait to get out of Boston.
jmi1950
minus 2.7 dWar is bad. JD has more value as a DH. The real issue for the the Sox is can Hanley be a primary 1B. Although , given his vesting option (22 MM for 2019 if he gets to about 500 more plate apps. they may really like JD as a DH, so as to have an excuse to make sure Hanley never vests.
JFactor
Couldn’t Martinez be a long term solution at 1B?
oldleftylong
Nope.

I could see the Marlins being interested in big league pieces like Contreras and/or Baez, but I don’t see the Cubs being interested in something involving them. A prospect package could work, but that would be a pretty crowded situation Chicago would have to deal with afterwards
RunDMC
But ATL hasn’t picked up John Hart’s 2018 extension, right? So, if he’s not under contract, what’s preventing them giving Moore control, regardless if Hart is the interim GM (again)? Moore could come in and hire who he wants for the GM role, which I would have be a condition to taking the job.
I don’t think Moore would be the best move, but anything to try and move on from Hart and Schuerholz (eventually).
NL_East_Rivalry
It’s all about Hart. If he wants to stay he will. If he doesn’t want to stay they will hire Moore. Let’s wait for the fallout after the postseason to see what Hart wishes to do
desertbull
The Cubs have to replace Davis, Arietta and Lackey. Hendricks, Bryant are Arb eligible. No way they take on that contract.
brandons-3
It could work if the Marlins took on Heyward’s contract. They’re either going to get salary relief or prospects not both. With Heyward you’d at least get a decent replacement for Stanton while eating a large amount of the deal. The the remainder of Stanton’s deal and negotiate the prospect exchange from there. Easier said than done, but the money for Heyward has already been spent and it could be a clever way of adding Stanton while turning that sunk contract into something even if more expensive.
skip 2
Yep your right Brandon! That’s the only way I see it happening!
CUJO11
Heyward has a no trade clause thru 2018 and then partial no trade thru 2020, so forget that idea.
CUJO11
Heyward has a full no trade clause thru 2018 and partial thru 2020, so you can forget that option.
kbarr888
There’s only one reason why the Marlins would trade Stanton and that’s to get rid of the giant contract. Why on Earth would they give up one giant contract that produces a ton of hits, runs, home runs, and RBIs……. for a similar contract that produces very little offense.
Heyward does have an opt-out after the 2018 season but there’s no way he’s going to choose to do that with the lack of production from the plate that he brings. No way he ever would get a contract even close to the one he signed if he hit the open market again. I doubt he would get half of what he signed for.
Stanton has an opt-out after the 2020 season, and there’s no way that he would stay with the Marlins because he wants to win. The Marlins would actually only save about 10 million dollars over those three years by taking on Heyward’s contract and then they’d be stuck with him for the next 5 years.
The Cubs would certainly be better off making sure they have the payroll to extend their young stars then to add Stanton to their mix….imho.
CUJO11
Stanton wants to win, but not bad enough to give up that contract.

It’s funny that every single one of these paragraphs from cafardo had to be changed to “in a conflicting report” or “there doesn’t seem to be an on paper spot for Martinez”
hiflew
There is nothing stopping the Red Sox from signing JD and then trading one of the other OFs. It’s unlikely, but it’s not like big names don’t ever get traded at the winter meetings. I could see signing JD, moving Mookie or Benintendi to center and Jackie Bradley getting dealt for a first baseman (Justin Bour? Tommy Joseph?) with prospects added on one or both sides.
mcase7187
I’m with you I think it’s time for them to trade JBJ he’s a great glove but a sub par hitter they should have traded hi when his stock was at its highest they have enough players that can play center they need that power bat I could even see Hanley becoming a bench player more than a everyday player
redsoxu571
What makes you think that’s a good idea? Given the defensive downgrade at TWO positions (Benintendi to Martinez in LF and Bradley to Benintendi in CF), you probably wouldn’t even see much of a net overall value improvement by swapping Martinez in for Bradley in the Boston outfield…and what little improvement you would get would come at a HUGE salary expense.
Once you factor in that Martinez could see a major regression from this season and/or start to see his body break down, and that’s a ton of downside for minor-at-best improvement.
mcase7187
I’m not necessarily saying it has to be Martinez JBJ could be used to get a more consistent hitter and they can sign another one to be the everyday 1st BM/DH the Sox don’t have a lot of holes to put that kinda of players they need right now because of how stacked they are so they may have to trade a player with Sam Travis at 1st and RD at 3rd so trading a player like him maybe there only option he is 27-28
lowtalker1
It’s funny that people think someone can just slide into first…: because it’s so easy. It’s a lot harder of a position than people think.
Any player out of position is noticeable
You want a first baseman? Than get one.

Its very easy to do…Lets ask Ron Washington… 🙂

This just in from Nick Cafardo: everybody the Tigers ever signed is going to Boston because of their connection to Dombrowski
Damakibe
Ugh. Cafardo is the kind of fantasy GM click-bait and hasn’t had an original thought in years.
Even his editors say so: “Material from interviews, wire services, other beat writers, and league and team sources was used in this report.”
So, he reads other people’s stuff, aggregates it, and creates scoops. What a job!
jd396
I think if you looked on his hard drive, you’d see lots of documents like this:
“Red Sox Will Be In On [click to insert random free agent]”
“Red Sox Talking to [click to insert random team] Regarding Potential [that team’s best player] Trade”
“Blake Swihart’s HOF Case”
“List of MLB teams that aren’t the Red Sox”

Lol. Spot on.
Nick4747
Unless j.d openly states I wouldn’t mind moving to first I don’t see a fit. Yes they could trade jbj would that bring back enough to warrant a loss on defense and overall commitment to j.d? I don’t think so. U could sign a first base option there are a few options out there free agents none of which should warrant the cost jd is sure to.
bbcatt
The simple solution to the Red Sox power outage is to bring back David Ortiz.
empiresam
Ortiz is retired and one year older, how could he duplicate 2016? Best for the team and hi. to move on.
rememberthecoop
Cafardo is getting bad info if he believes the Cubs would be in on Stanton. The players the Marlins “would love” must be regulars, since the farm is barren at the top right now. Theo already said he wouldn’t trade those kinds of players, but if he did it would be for starting pitching, with Arrieta & Lackey leaving.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
There’s still a chance arrieta re-signs with the cubs.
