The Reds have outrighted corner infielder D.J. Peterson after he cleared waivers, per a club announcement. Cincinnati had just claimed the former top prospect off waivers from the White Sox.
Clearly, the series of moves was designed to add Peterson without tying up a 40-man spot, which seems to have been successful. He will be Rule 5 eligible if another organization wants to take a look during camp, but Peterson will not be able to elect minor-league free agency at the end of the current season.
Chosen 12th overall in the 2013 draft, Peterson once rated as one of the game’s hundred or so best prospects. His stock has slipped, though, as it became evident he likely wouldn’t stick at third base and as his bat has failed to develop.
The Mariners ultimately gave up on Peterson after he slashed .264/.323/.414 at Triple-A to open the season. He hit even less upon landing with the White Sox, but became the latest stalled power hitter to land with the Reds organization on Sunday. It seems reasonable to expect that Peterson will at least have some shot at impressing his new employer in camp, assuming he’s still with the club come mid-February.

This is one of my least favorite practices. This doesn’t help the player at all. This is nothing but manipulating a loophole that needs to be closed. If you claim someone onto your 40 man roster, you should be required by rule to keep them for a certain amount of time, otherwise he should be outrighted to his original team’s (in this case the Chi Sox) minor league system.
padresfan
Why? You want him but he doesn’t deserve a 40 man spot, simple enough
It’s a depth move
What I don’t like about it.. is when someone is trying to sneak a player though waivers and a rival club snags him up
tim815
You say manipulating a loophole.
A rebuilding team says adding talent.
The loophole didn’t change with the new CBA, so i won’t for awhile. Annoying, maybe, but the player in question sits and chillaxes until everything finishes.
padresfan
If that happened then these guys wouldn’t ever get claimed
hiflew
Yeah…and? Then they would be outrighted by their original instead of a new team. How would that hurt them? Besides if they DID get claimed, at least they would have a chance to prove they belong with a 30 day or so mandate.
padresfan
What are you a troll? Being a tough guy
Would you rather be off the 40 man in Miami or la?
Miami you’ll get a chance
mcdusty31
How is he being a tough guy? By disagreeing with you? You Padres fans have too much pent up frustration…I know your team is horrible but please don’t come on this site and take it out on other people…in my opinion (not trying to get tough with you) I think the process is something that could stand to be tinkered with eventually

Yeah its great when a rebuilding club like the Reds can take away a prospect from a non-rebuilding team like the…White Sox?
briank77
Original team would be the Mariners not the White Sox.

It gives players who may have big league talent but are stuck on deep teams a chance to break through somewhere. The fact that the Reds subsequently outrighted him is irrelevant. The fact that no other team claims him means that no other team he is a major league talent. If he was such a talent, in theory teams would keep claiming him until he ended up on the team where he was talented enough to stay on the 40 man
black69
I say let the Braves claim him. He’s got a family tie with Dustin potentially with the big club next year, and let him Duke it out at the MLB level in Spring training to play third.
I HATE when a top prospect never gets a shot to play in the show.
black69
That slash line may not be setting the world on fire, but if he produced that at the big league level, he would be serviceable. Plenty of Gregor Blancos and smelly Cabrerra’s (pre PED) have made a career of it.
jbigz12
That’s a gigantic if and if he put that slash line together it’d be at first base. Thats not a passable slash line for a 1B. He looks like a tommy Joseph at best if he catches a few breaks.
Phillies2017
Just to note== Compare Peterson’s and Joseph’s OPS= almost identical–Peterson (719) to Joseph (714)
Obviously Peterson’s is in AAA but still- found that interesting.
ReverieDays
Its because he’s not a top prospect anymore.

DJ isn’t even the best prospect in his own family in some people’s eyes. Dustin had a great spring until injuries slowed him down. His power suffered greatly while his hand heals but hopefully he will recover.
DJ Peterson would have zero interest for the Braves. He doesn’t have a future at third and has never develop the one real tool (power) that most thought he’d develop. Atlanta has no use for him in the system.
DD martin
Given he is a former Mariner farmhand, give him a year or two and he will likely be a consistent 30 HR guy. Seems most players the M’s give up on get better in other locations.
Phillies2017
Solid move for the Reds’, he’s controllable through 2019 if his contract isn’t purchased.
lesterdnightfly
Rightfully let go. With boomboxes and MP3s, no team needs to hire a DJ .
